Sixty Years Wedded and Happy. Mr. and Mrs. I.D. Johnson (picture).

A romance that culminated in marriage between Miss Almeda Zartman and I.D. Johnson sixty years ago still exists, in spite of the changes of time, and “Home” with its sacred ties, built with thoughts and sentiments, of love, remains the same, only strengthened with the hardships of the years.

Mrs. and Mrs. Johnson both were natives of Ohio, the former born in Miami county in 1844, and the latter in Perry county, 1847. Both displayed great patriotism during the Civil War, Mrs. Johnson serving two and a half years as a member of the 46th Indiana Volunteers, and Mrs. Johnson beating the drum for a drum corps at rallies. Their marriage took place in the Zartman school house two miles north of Macy, Miami county, Indiana, Jan. 9, 1867 in the presence of a large number of relatives and friends. Their sixty years of wedded life have been spent in the home at Millark, built by them when they were married, and their anniversary was celebrated there last Sunday from 1 until 4 o’clock p.m. The wedding ceremony was performed again about three o’clock, by Rev. Linvengood of the Fulton U.B. church, in the presence of 125 friends and relatives, among them being Mrs. Johnson’s sister, Mrs. Mary Nisey, of Tiosa; John Sowers, of Macy and Levi Horton of Wagoner’s Station, who witnessed the first ceremony. They received flowers and a number of gifts.

These estimable people are in fairly good health and Mrs. Johnson expressed her desire to a representative of the Republican that they might have a “belling” and a drum corps be present. They are the parents of three children: Harry E. Johnson, of Peru; Mrs. Clay Sheets of Rochester and Mrs. John Conrad, of Millark, who lives close to them; also thirteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. – Peru Republican, Jan. 14, 1927.
Death*Almeda Zartman died on 5 May 1928 at Millark, Fulton, Indiana, at age 80; buried at Mt. Zion Cemetery.1
ObitAlmeda's obituary was published in the Rochester Sentinel on 7 May 1928:

Mrs. I. D. JOHNSON, aged 80, a pioneer resident of the Millark community, southeast of Rochester, died Saturday evening at her home following an illness of several weeks. She had been bedfast for the past nine weeks and death was due to hardening of the arteries and paralysis. Almeda [ZARTMAN], daughter of David and Margaret ZARTMAN, was born in Perry County, Ohio, October 19th, 1847, and when ten years of age, moved with her parents to Miami County. At an early age she was united with the German Lutheran faith the same taking place in the Zartman school house which was then used as a church. On January 9th, 1867, at the same church, she was married to Israel D. JOHNSON and their entire married life has been spent at their present home near Millark. Mrs. Johnson, who during former years was quite a musician, beat the drum during the Civil War and was a conspicuous figure at rallys during this period. Mr. Johnson, who survives his wife, is a Civil War veteran having served two and one-half years in the Union Army as a member of the 46th Indiana Volunteers. Survivors, other than the husband, are two daughters, Mrs. L. C. SHEETS, of Rochester, and Mrs. John L. CONRAD, of near Millark, and one son, Harry E. JOHNSON, of Peru, Ind; two sisters, Mrs. Augustine HISEY, of Tiosa, and Mrs. William RUNKLE, of Roann. There are also 14 grandchildren, among them being Mrs. George J. MILLER, of Fulton, whom Mrs. Johnson raised from the age of four months, and 17 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon at the Mt. Zion Church with the Rev. Paul MADER in charge. Burial will be made in the Mt. Zion cemetery.1
