Obit* | Matthias A.'s obituary was published in the Morgan Messenger on 16 November 1944: Mathias A. Vanorsdale, 74, died Thursday afternoon, November 9, in a Cumberland, Md. Hospital, following a long illness. Mr. Vanorsdale, whose home was at Great Cacapon, retired from active farming several years ago. He was a son of the late Isaac and Edna Rankin Vanorsdale and spent practically all of his life in Morgan county. A teacher in the schools of the county for 33 years, he attended Shepherd Teachers' College and Valparaiso College, Valparaiso, Indiana. He served the county as surveyor for a time, being elected in 1916. In 1920 he was elected county commissioner for the short term and was again elected to serve on the county court. He was a member of the Morgan County Board of Education at the time of death, having been elected in 1940. His term would have expired June 30, 1945. Surviving are his widow, four children, Mrs. Jeff Heiser, Baltimore, Md; Wiatman Vanorsdale, Mrs. Sam Harris and Isaac Vanorsdale, of Cumberland, Md. Two brothers, Clarence M., and Charles of Connellsville, Pa., and two sisters, Miss Chlorus Vanorsdale, Cumberland, Md., and Miss Lillian, Great Cacapon, also survive. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the United Brethren Church, Great Cacapon, with the Rev. H.E. Richardson, of Sleepy Creek, officiating. Rev. Richardson married Mr. and Mrs. Vanorsdale in the same church 48 years ago. Pall bearers were Price E. Clark, Jos. W. Stayman, George S. Ambrose, George A. Goller, all with the school system of the county and Edwin V. Edmiston and Charles S. Stuckey, recently elected to the board of education. Burial was in Greenway Cemetery, Berkeley Springs.8 |

Surviving are two sisters, Lillian, with whom he lived; Chlorus, of Cumberland, Md; three brothers, M.A. Vanorsdale, of Great Cacapon; Clarence M. and Charles of Connellsville, Pa. Funeral services were held at the Great Cacapon United Brethren Church Saturday at 2 o'clock conducted by the Rev. H.H. Richardson, of Sleepy Creek and the Rev. Grover Pool, the pastor. Burial was at Mt. Nebo.7 |
