(Witness) Census | He appeared on the census of 24 August 1850 District No. 42, Morgan, Virginia, in the household of James Graham; page 95B, occupation farmer, 6 children at home.1 |
(Witness) Bio | Parkerson Iden served in A.P. Hill's Army during the battle of Bull Run, Va., August 18, 1862 and marched with Lee when he captured Harper's Ferry September 15 and made the long from Antietam when 23,000 men were killed in this fierce battle. Parkerson was wounded by a rifle bullet in the left side of his chest about 6 p.m. that same day. Lee's army retreated to Virginia 18 Sept. 1862. Parkerson was left behind in a school house hospital. He escaped 10 Oct. 1862 and walked to the Potomac River, where a canal boat gave him a lift to Hancock, MD. He walked to Berkeley Springs, and hitched a ride with Frederic Hovermale, a farmer, who was on his way to Unger's Store. Hovermale gave him a warm meal and kept him over the night. The farmer's 18-year-old daughter, Catherine, dressed his wound and comforted the soldier. The army finally caught up with Parkerson on 4 Dec. 1862 and he served until 1865, when he returned to Morgan County and married the farmer's daughter, Catharine Hovermale. (Private Parkerson Iden, Company D, Virginia Militia 89th Regiment, Morgan County, John Unger Captain 1861-1865.) Parkerson and Catharine farmed their farm and raised nine children. They were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Mt. Olivet.4 |
Marriage* | Parkerson Iden married Catharine Rebecca Hovermale on 20 December 1864 at Morgan, West Virginia.3,5 |

Census | He appeared on the census of 12 June 1900 at Rock Gap District, Morgan, West Virginia, ED 90, sheet 4A, occupation farmer, owned farm, married 37 years, 9 children, 8 living.8 |
Death | He died on 29 October 1909 at Stotler's Cross Roads, Morgan, West Virginia, at age 69; buried at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery.2 |
Obit* | Parkerson's obituary was published in the Morgan Messenger on 5 November 1909: M. Parkison Iden of Stotler's Cross Roads, Expires after a Protracted Illness. Died at his home at Stotler's Cross Roads, Friday evening, October 29, 1909, at 6:30. Mr. Parkison Iden, in his 69th year. With his health impaired for over a year, Mr. Iden was stricken with an acute attack of dropsy which rendered recovery impossible. He realized that he could not recover from the attack and contemplated the approach of the Grim Reaper with a tranquility always characteristic of those who have an abiding faith in the immortality of the soul. He talked to his children and inquired with anxious concern about his many friends, his soul buoyant with love for every one, and, with unswerving faith in God, in his great suffering he welcomed the shadows that lie beyond the passing years. A life such as his that has filled its measure of duties, enjoyed its sunshine, and mourned its misfortunes, tempered its shadows and welcomed its blessings, finds ample compensation in every fleeting stage from springtime to the autumn of life, the paling twilight coming as a sweet incense to him who has traversed the brief and fitful journey from the perishable to the imperishable life that is our common identity. Mr. Iden was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church for thirty years. He was looked upon as a consistent member, and was held in high esteem by a large circle of acquaintances. A widow and eight children survive: William, who lives in California; Charles, in Indiana; Mr. May Batt and Sherman, Davis, W. Va; Mrs. H. M. Ruppenthal and Mrs. J. W. Brathwaite, Berkeley Springs; Ernest and Champ, at home. The funeral occurred Sunday at 1 o'clock from the Mt. Olivet M.E. church, Rev. Barch conducting the service. His pastor spoke from the text, "So teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom." Beautiful flowers were in evidence, and by reason of deceased's extensive acquaintance the attendance was an unusually large one. An impressive feature of the sad event was the singing of favorite hymns by the friends while en route from the home to the church-in compliance with the request of deceased. Interment was made in the cemetery adjoining the church.2 |
