(Witness) Bio | NATHAN WRIGHT FAMILY Nathan Wright came from France in the mid-1700's; Quaker Hannah Welding came from England. They were married Aug. 30, 1761 in Philadelphia's historic Christ Church. Their son. Nathaniel, born Jan. 10, 1778 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania died March 1, 1828 married Oct. 16, 1796 Phoebe Frazer, daughter of Moses Frazer and Hannah Kinsey. (See Moses Frazer Family) "Nathan" ran a mill near Philadelphia; they moved to Baltimore, Maryland and then on to the Knoxville, Tennessee area, thinking the climate would improve Phoebe's health. Their children were: Sidney born Aug. 15, 1797 died Dec. 11, 1807: Hannah born Sept. 13, 1799 died March 30, 1876; Moses born June 23, 1801: Delilia born June 10, 1803 died Sept. 15, 1807; Amy horn Nov. 6, 1805 died Sept. 15, 1807. Their first home in this area was near Pleasant Hill, Miami County. Ohio then called Stillwater. A government land patent was granted to Nathan Wright as the first person to settle the land in the vicinity of Washington Road between State Route 718 and State Route 41 in Concord Township. Restless Indians caused them to live in fear until after the war of 1812. Hannah was the only child to survive the covered wagon trek to Ohio. Six more children were born to "Nathan" and Phoebe Wright in Miami County, Ohio: Nathan born Jan. 10, 1808 died Sept. 22, 1841; Solomon born Jan. 20, 1810 died Oct. 25, 1813; Elliott born Jan. 28, 1812, married Catherine Myers (See Elliott Wright Family); David Kinsey born Oct. 25, 1813; Elizabeth born July 6, 1815 died Feb. 26, 1873; Jefferson born Jan. 5, 1817 died Oct. 31, 1876. Their daughter, Hannah Wright, married Christley Miller and had seven children: David; George: Elliott who married Eliza Tullis and owned a picture gallery in Troy, Ohio; William; Phoebe who married William Shackleford; Elizabeth who married Heber Hinman; and Sarah who married Lenox Compton. Their daughter, Elizabeth "Betsy" Wright, married Elihu Moore. Their children were: Thomas, James C. and Benjamin. The second son, James C. Moore, born March 12, 1859 died 1922 married Alice C. Foster 1857-1946 and they had four children: Emma B. born Oct. 31, 1886; Eugene born Jan. 26, 1889 died 1974; Harry C. born Nov. 24, 1890 died 1964; and Ethel May born Feb. 4, 1893. The youngest son, Jefferson Wright, married Elizabeth Davis and they had five children: (1) Calvin D. became a judge in Miami County, Ohio, married Minerva Freeman, had a son named Freeman born Oct. 3, 1870 with mother and baby dying soon after, Calvin married second Jennie Stuart and they had William B. born Nov. 25, 1874 (who married Anna Cosley and had a daughter, Margaret C.) and Laura M. born Aug. 19, 1876: (2) Marietta married Albert Wagoner and their daughter Elizabeth Pearl was born March 17, 1870; (3) Margaret married Fred Will; (4) Sabina married Ervin Black; and (5) Elliott died in childhood. The third Nathan Wright 1808-1841 married Aug. 30, 1827 Leah Smith, daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Smith and sister of Israel Frazer's wife. Farming first in Concord Township, they moved to Fairbury, Illinois, but soon returned to Concord Township. Miami County, Ohio, where Nathan bought forty acres. Nathan and his brother, Elliott, went to Troy for lumber. Elliott's team bolted on McClung's Hill and ran into Nathan's wagon, upsetting it and fatally injuring Nathan. Nathan and Leah Wright had seven children: James Listen born July 26, 1829: Phoebe born March 4. 1832 died June 11 1833; Sylvester David born May 9, 1834; Hannah E. born May 26, 1836 died Oct. 3, 1852; Thomas J. born March 22, 1838 died March 10, 1867; Catherine born Aug. 25, 1840 (lied Oct. 4, 1867; and Nathan born May 14, 1842 in Ohio died Sept. 25, 1902 (Nathan was born 7Vz months after his father's accidental death). Leah then moved her family back to Fairbury, Illinois. James. Sylvester and Nathan returned to Miami County, Ohio as young men and purchased land. James Wright married Annie Webb: their children were Fred and Effie. Sylvester Wright married Margaret Lambert; their children were Edwin, James, William, Clement and Peter. The fourth Nathan Wright married Mary Carson in 1863 and they had three children - Alta Leah, Crapo and Nathan Jr. - but all died as did their mother in 1867. In 1869 Nathan married Eliza Jane Caw born April 24, 1852, daughter of William and Sarah Dane Caw. Their nine children were: (1) Mary Louise born March 16, 1870 died Oct. 21, 1900 (married first John Smith, had two daughters - Elsie born Jan. 1893 who died in her teens and Bessie born Oct. 1897 who married Fred Bennett-, Mary married second John Bergman); (2) Pauline Sigourney born Feb. 11, 1873 died April 1, 1933 (married Charles Otho Binkley, lived in Troy, Ohio, had two children - Charles Otho Binkley, lived in Troy, Ohio had two children - Charles Gordon who married O. Marie Quinn and had one child, Doris now Mrs. Fred T. Marshall, and Marion Barlow); (3) Anna Adele born March 11, 1876 died Aug. 17, 1957, married first Allen Deep Snow (see Allen Deep Snow Family) and married second Mr. Compton; (4) Bonaparte Walkly born Nov. 3, 1878 died May 15, 1899; (5) Catherine Corsica born Aug. 3, 1881 died Oct. 16, 1901; (6) Grevy Nathan born Jan. 18, 1884 died June 25, 1953 (See Grevy Nathan Wright Family); (7) Eliza Alena born Dec. 31, 1886 died Jan. 13, 1887; (8) Saussier St. Clair born Sept. 17, 1889 (See Saussier St. Clair Wright Family); and (9) Ney Weller born Jan. 28, 1893 died Dec. 10, 1966 (See Ney Weller Wright Family). She died of complications, following an illness of two years. Marietta [JOHNSON], the daughter of John and Elizabeth JOHNSON, was born February 16, 1862, in Fulton county, where she has lived her entire life. She was united in marriage to Eber ALLEN, who preceded her in death. Surviving ar four sons, Charles [ALLEN], of Macy; John [ALLEN], of Anderson; Rex [ALLEN], of South Bend; Oscar [ALLEN], of Deerpark, Wash; three daughters, Mrs. Daisy MOORE, Allegan, Mich; Mrs. Ruth Vice, of Lapaz, and Mrs. Hazel WOLFORD, of South Bend; and one sister, Mrs. Jack EASTERDAY of this city. Funral services will be held at the United Brethren church in Rochester, 2 p.m., Wednesday afternoon. The body will remain at the Foster funeral home where friends may call until the hour of the funeral.1 |

He was a member of the First Christian church of Macy. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Jesse (Ruth) VICE, Lapaz, and Mrs. Clyde (Hazel) WOLFERT, Edwardsburg, Mich; three brothers, John [ALLEN], Alexandria; Oscar [ALLEN], Bremen, and Rex [ALLEN], Lake of the Woods, and nieces and nephews. A sister and a brother died earlier. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tursday at the Foster & Good funeral home. The Rev. William KING will officiate. Burial will be at Plainview cemetery, Macy. Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Wednesday. Tuesday, February 7, 1967.2 |
