Death* | Andrew Jackson Curtis died on 10 August 1931 at Stella, Richardson, Nebraska, at age 84; buried at the Stella Cemetery.2 |
Obit | Andrew Jackson's obituary was published in the Stella Newspaper on 14 August 1931: Stella (NE) newspaper: Aug 14, 1931 Andrew J. Curtis Passes Away Stella was called upon to mourn one of its pioneer citizens this week, when A J Curtis passes away Monday. Mr. Curtis had been blessed with unusually good health for a man of his years, and was around as usual until the extreme heat recently, which distressed him greatly. Although sick only a short time, his condition was regarded as critical, and the absent children summoned, and were with him at the last, except Cecil, whose health is very poor. Funeral services were conducted by Elder Sapp at the Christian Church Tuesday afternoon, and burial was in the Stella cemetery. Elder Sapp took for his text, "I have fought a good fight" Elder Sapp had been a friend of Mr. Curtis for many years, and his sermon was very comforting to the family. He read the following notice: "Andrew J Curtis was born December 20, 1846 in Miami Co, Ohio. From there his parents moved to Muncie, In in 1848, where he grew to manhood. April 7, 1872, he was married to Mary Frances Ward, a neighbor girl, who survives. He is also survived by five daughters: Olive M., wife of E C Ailor of Haddam, Kansas; Rosa M, wife of J H Young of Flagler, Colorado; Amanda E, wife of M C Marts of Shubert; Effie G, wife of R E Marts of Stella; Bessie F., wife of C.E. Teare of Hartington, NE. Two sons: Cecil J of Seneca, NE; S. Dayton at home. A brother and a sister, Calvin Curtis and Catherine Curtis, both of Eaton, IN. Thirteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. One one of his eight children preceded him in death, a daughter dying when nearing her second birthday. For several years, Mr. Curtis resided in Shubert, where he and his sons conducted a hardware store. After disposing of the business there, Mr. Curtis moved back to Stella, where he died Monday, Aug. 10, 1931 at 1:45 a.m. He became a member of the Christian Church in 1895. He was a man, who from his sturdy character, gave support to his family, his community, his church, and institutions of learning and betterment." At the church, Mr and Mrs J S Kimsey, with Miss Kathryn Kimsey accompanist, sang "God Will Take Care of You", "Home Over There" and "The Old Rugged Cross". and at the grave by special request, Mr. and Mrs. Kimsey sang the first verse and chorus of "God Be With You 'Til We Meet Again". The following young men relatives acted as pall bearers: Lutgen Young, Sidney Stewart, Vern Curtis, Herman marts, Boyd and Clarence Marts. The floral offering was beautiful; included a double spray from the family, and flowers from the Christian Church and the community circle. The granddaughters acted as flower bearers. Mrs. Sidney Stewart, Mrs. Vern Davis, Misses Ahlers and Wilma Teare. Elder Sapp, as he preceded the flower girls leaving the church repeated the 23rd Psalm. Mr. Curtis, with his family, left Indiana, and Feb. 14, 1878, arrived by train at Phelps, Missouri, crossing to Brownsville on the ferry. After renting from his uncles for a few years, in 1884 Mr. Curtis bought the farm now the home of Walter McCully, and continued his residence there about 25 years. The farm was practically unimproved, And during his residence there, Mr. Curtis converted the Place into a beautiful, productive farm. Among those who were here for the service were: Mrs. JH Young and son Lutgen of Flagler; Mr and Mrs C E Teare and three daughters of Hartington; Mr. and Mrs. E C Ailor of Haddam, and daughter and little granddaughter, Mrs. Vern Davis and Virginia of Clyde, KS; Mrs. and Mr. George Birkenbine of Nevada, Missouri; Theodore Kirkpatrick of Muncie, IN; Mr. and Mrs. Ada Curtis, Mrs. and Mr. Dorsey Curtis, Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Curtis, all of Auburn. r. and Mrs Curtis were married 59 years ago last April. Mrs. Curtis and the children give this poem in memoriam: It is sad that one we cherish Should be taken from our home But the joys that do not perish Live in memory alone. All the years we've spent together, All the happy, golden hours Shall be cherished in remembrance, Fragrant sweets from memory's flowers.2 |
