(Witness) ResidenceHarriet Bellows lived with Frederick A. Moore in 1875 at Scott City, Atchison, Missouri;
Dear Al,
This one stumped me for a while, because the cemetery book does not list a Scott City as any of the small towns that were part of the townships that made up Atchison County. However, the book about the schools, which is generally not my best resource, gave up this gem of information: "Scott City - Early village listed in the 1861 County Assessment list..these villages usually included a store, blacksmith shop, a few residences and sometimes a schoolhouse and a church. Several had post offices." (page 34, The Country Schools of Atchison County 1845-1945 The First 100 Years, 1996).
My newspaper book also came up with this information:
North Star (Scott City), located 2 miles west of Phelps and 8 miles west of Rock Port, on the Missouri River. It has a population of about 200, and has a M.E. Church, a public school house, two flouring mills, a hotel, warehouse, a stockyard, and three general stores. There is a ferry at this place to Brownsville, just opposite in Nebraska. (This information taken from Campbell's Gazateer of Missouri, 1875.)
So, I guess I can confirm that there was a town by the name of Scott City. I went back to the school book after finding the name North Star in the newspaper book and found a picture of the school and a notation that in 1879 Mary and Victoria Moore had perfect attendance. Are they relatives?
Hope this information is helpful.
