(Witness) Bio | Isaac W. BEMENDERFER, furniture dealer and undertaker, Morocco, began business in 1873, which was solely undertaking, until 1881, when he opened his present store, and added a stock of furniture. He is doing a good business and has as large and well selected a stock as can be found in the country. From 1874 to 1880, he had D. M. Pulver associated with him as partner. Mr. Bemenderfer is a native of Stark County, Ohio, was born September 4, 1840, and is one of nine children of William and Sophia (Lichtenwalter) Bemenderfer, the latter a native of Pennsylvania, the former of Maryland, from which State he came, when quite young, with his parents to Virginia, where he grew to manhood, when he went to Starkl County, Ohio, where he married and remained until 1853, when he came to Fulton County, Indiana, where he owned a farm until his death, January 27, 1881. His wife still lives on the same farm. Isaac remained at home attending the common schools until twenty-one, where he rented and worked farms until 1869, after which he learned the carpenter's trade, which he has followed more or less since. He came to Newton County in the spring of 1865, and rented various farms until the fall of 1869, when he came to Morocco. November 9, 1861, he enlisted in Company K, Forty-sixth Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and served with the regiment until discharged on account of sickness, in July, 1862. He was married, April 8, 1863, to Melissa A. Enslen, a native of Allen County, Ohio, and a daughter of Frederick and Anna (Burch) Enslen. Eleven children have been born to them, six of whom--Mary E., Elida L., Melville E., Lillie D., Ionia and Ted--are living. He and his wife are both members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He is superintendent of the Sunday school, and leader of the choir at Morocco. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and an Odd Fellow. He has been Justice of the Peace for four years. In politics, he has been since the War a Republican; previous to that time, was a Democrat. He is one of the prominent men of the township and county. Obit | Everton Aitken's obituary was published in the Rochester Sentinel on 11 December 1939: Everton Aitken RANNELLS, 79, former resident of Rochester, passed away Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock at his home in Fulton, Ind. Death resulted from complications following an illness of three weeks duration. Mr. Rannells had a wide acquaintance of friendsthroughout both Fulton and Cass counties. Mr. Rannells was born March 14th, 1860 at Rochester, Indiana, the son of J. F. and Mary AITKEN RANNELLS. On October 15th, 1895, he was united in marriage with Mabel FEECE. The deceased was a member of the I.O.O.F. and the Knights of Pythias lodges of Rochester. With the exception of three years residency in Seattle, Washington, all of Mr. Rannells’ life was spent in Fulton county. For a few years he and his brother, W. I. (Ezra) RANNELLS operated a serve-yourself-grocery in Rochester and for the past number of years he has operated a restaurant in Fulton. The survivors are his wife; a son, Robert RANNELLS, of Fulton; two daughters, Mrs. Lucille KARN, of Bloomington; Mrs. F. M. CARITHERS, of Fulton; a granddaughter, Patricia KARN, and a sister, Mrs. Mary C. SHORE, of Oakland, Calif. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon, 2:30 o’clock at the Rannells home. Rev. J. Franklin ARTHUR will be in charge of the services. Interment will be made in the Fulton cemetery.1 |

Obit | Daniel's obituary was published in the Rochester Sentinel on 20 April 1936: Mrs. Ida CRABILL received word Sunday evening of the death of her nephew, Dan BROWN, aged 55, which occurred at his home in Hammond at 7:30 p.m. Death it is thought was due to a stroke of paralysis. Mr. Brown had been in ill health for the past two years following a stroke of paralysis which he suffered at that time. Mr. Brown was a native of this city. He for many years, was the local agent for the Wells -Fargo Express Company. The deceased was later transferred to Hammond by the Express Company. He became quite prominent in Republican party circles and was elected mayor of Hammond for two terms. While in Hammond, he was engaged in the real estate business. Survivors are the widow and a son, Robert [BROWN], who reside in Hammond. The funeral arrangements had not been completed at the time The News-Sentinel went to press.7 |

(Witness) Bio | This man is the son of Jacob and Mary Ann Curtis, both of whome were born, reared, married and are still living in Miami County, Ohio. Oliver was born in the same county as his parents on July 9, 1849, and married Susanna Byrkett, of the same place, December 8, 1870. They remained there until March, 1874, when they came to this county and located in Henry Township, but five years later moved to the present home. Mrs. Curtis was born in the same county as her husband on January 25, 1849. She is the daughter of David and Ann Byrkett, both born and raised in Miami County, Ohio. In fact the whole family belong to the same county. Mr. and Mrs. Curtis are the parents of two children, Bertha Alletha, born March 7, 1872, and Ora Celand, born September 15, 1874, and died March 15, 1875. Bertha, the only living child, is a bright and intelligent girl, and the delight of her parents. They have a pleasant home, which reflects taste and the substantial nature of the owners. They are highly respected and have many friends who value them as true neighbors and good people.3 |

The deceased was a faithful member of the Methodist church and Rebekah lodge at Leiters. Funeral services will be conducted at the Methodist church, Tuesday afternoon at 2:30, Rev. H. L. ADAMS in charge. Burial will be made at the Leiters Ford cemetery.7 |

Obit | Catherine's obituary was published in the Rochester Sentinel on 30 January 1911: Mrs. William H. [Catharine ANDERSON] CURTIS is dead as the result of a sudden attack of pneumonia. The aged lady arose as usual Sunday morning and, although suffering a severe cold, did not appear ill. However, at noon she took to her bed and steadily grew worse until 10:30 o’clock Sunday evening, when she passed away. She was born in Reading, Pennsylvania, June 14, 1839, and at an early age came to Indiana. She was united in marriage with W. H. CURTIS and to this union were born five children, who survive with the husband and father. The children are Mrs. Elva MATHIESON, Canton, Illinois; Mrs. Elsie PETERSTERN, Chicago; Mrs. Maud CARTWRIGHT, St. Paul; S. S. CURTIS, Hammond; and Charles CURTIS, this city.3 |

He died Sept. 19 in Waterville, Maine. He was buried in Newark Memorial Gardens. Brucker & Kisler Funeral Home, Newark, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the St. John’s United Church of Christ, Newark. Mr. Curtis was born Nov. 16, 1914 in Rochester to Vine and Frances WATSON CURTIS, who at one time had a meat market and grocery on East Ninth Street. He was married to Kathryn L. MURPHY CURTIS, who survives. He was owner-operator of Newark Meat Supply, retiring in 1985. He was an Army veteran of World War II, a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, Utica Masonic Lodge, Shriners, Elks Lodge, Newark Maennercoor, Rotary Club, SCORE and the American Legion. He was a past-president of the American Association of Meat Processors and of the Ohio Association of Meat Processors. Surviving with his wife are a son, James W. [CURTIS], Racine, Wis; a daughter, Sharon SHRADER, Newark; four grandchildren; a brother, Vine [CURTIS], San Antonio, Texas; two sisters, Frances BOND, Long Beach, Calif., and Dorothy RUSTON, Sun City West, Ariz. Preceding in death was a sister.2 |

Obit | Walter V.'s obituary was published in the Rochester Sentinel on 2 April 1940: Funeral services for Walter V. SIPE, aged 59, who died at his home on the north shore of Lake Manitou at 2:15 o’clock Monday afternoon from a heart block will be held from the Zimmerman Brothers Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Rev. H. T. RAFNEL, pastor of the First Baptist church, will officiate and interment will be made in the Rochester Odd Fellows cemetery. Friends may view the remains at the Zimmerman Brothers Funeral home prior to the hour of the last rites. Mr. Sipe was born in Union City, Ind., February 28, 1881. His parents were Thomas and Mahala (MANSFIELD) SIPE. He had lived in Rochester for thirty years moving here [from] Muncie. When Mr. Sipe first came to Rochester he was employed as a meat cutter by the late Vine CURTIS. In the last few years he has operated a grocery and restaurant at Lake Manitou under the name of “WALT’S CHILI PARLOR.” In a ceremony performed in Marion, August 24, 1924, he was married to Caddie PENNELL. Mr. Sipe was a member of the Rochester Eagles Lodge. Survivors are the wife at home, three brothers Roy V. SIPE and Raymond SIPE of Muncie and Ora SIPE of Washington, D.C., and a sister, Mrs. William MILLER of Muncie.3 |
