Obit* | Alexander Noah's obituary was published in the Rochester Sentinel on 19 January 1917: Alexander Noah HOOVER, son of Daniel C. and Frances HOOVER, was born Dec 4, 1846 near his present home a few miles northwest of Macy. He passed from this life Jan 12, 1917, aged 70 years, one month and 12 days after an illness of ten days duration. Mr. Hoover had just returned from a visit at the home of his son in Chicago when he suffered an attack of appendicitis. A specialist came to perform an operation but it was too late. Mr. Hoover, while but a youth, enlisted in the 153rd Indiana Infantry and was honorably discharged in 1865. On March 28, 1879 he was united in marriage with Emma Alice COOK and to this union one child was born, Charles Guy [HOOVER], who with his wife and three children now reside in Chicago. He was converted in early manhood and remained until the time of his death a devoted Christian. Mr. Hoover was a member of the Pleasant Hill M.D. church and it was at that place that the funeral services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. H. R. CARSON of Gilead. A large audience was present despite the inclemency of the weather to offer their sympathy and pay their respects. Interment was made at the Akron I.O.O.F. cemetery. He leaves a wife, a son, Charles Guy of Chicago, with his wife and three children, a sister, Mrs. Lydia MURPHY of the Pleasant Hill neighborhood, two brothers, Joseph [HOOVER] and Freemont [HOOVER] of Akron and many other relatives and friends to mourn his departure.11 |
(Witness) Bio | ALEXANDER N. HOOVER, one of the enterprising farmers of Allen Township is a native of the township in which he resides, and was born December 4, 1846. He was the fifth son born to Daniel C. and Frances (Shrofe) Hoover, both natives of Ohio, who settled in this county about 1832. Our subject spent his boyhood and youth working upon his father’s farm in his native county. He attended the district school, in which he received a good common school education. In February, 1865, he made a third effort to enter the Union army, refused twice already on account of his youthfulness. This time he succeeded, and the name of Alexander N. Hoover appeared upon the roll of Company C, 151st Indiana Regiment. With this he served until the close of the war, receiving his discharge in September, 1865. An attack of a chronic disease, occasioned by exposure and the habitual use of unwholesome food and water had impaired his health somewhat, in consequence of which two years were spent at the home of his father recruiting the same. As soon as if was sufficiently regained he resumed farming. He, however availed himself of an opportunity to attend school during the winter time, which he did until the fall of 1871, at which time he took up, for his winter employment, the avocation of a teacher. In this capacity he was successfully engaged for eight years. In order to qualify himself for this pursuit he attended the State Normal School at Terre Haute, during the spring of 1874, one term. Since the spring of 1879 his attention has exclusively been given to farming. He located where he now resides in the fall of 1874. Emma A. Cook, a native of Somerset County, Pennsylvania, born June 6, 1847, became his wife March 26, 1879. She was the daughter of George and Rachel (Albright) Cook, who were respectively natives of Somerset and Bedford Counties, Pennsylvania. This marriage has resulted in the birth of one child, Charles Guy, born January 22, 1882. Mr. and Mrs. Hoover belong to the M. E. church. Politically, the former is a Republican. He owns a handsome little farm of sixty-two acres, nearly all of which is in cultivation. He is an industrious and successful farmer, and an honored and worthy citizen. He began with nothing, but through industry, perseverance and economy, he is now in comfortable circumstances. From History of Miami County, Published in 1887 by Brant and Fuller in Chicago - Allen Township.12 |

Burial was made there. Hoover, a native of the Pleasant Hill commnity in Henry township left this county many years ago and settled in Chicago where he became the owner-manager of the Education Music Bureau. His wife was the former Myrtle OGDEN of this city. He was a member of the Masonic order and of the Methodist church. Surviving are the wife; two sons, Charles [HOOVER], overseas, and Maurice [HOOVER], with the armed forces in Virginia; four daughters, Mrs. Wm. HORTON, Portland, Ore., Mrs. Charles ACREE, Mrs. Ernest VAN DUZEN and Miss Mary Ann HOOVER, Chicago, and five grandchildren.6 |
NoteB* | Charles Guy Hoover was born in Indiana in 1882 and raised as an only child on his parents' farm. He undoubtedly showed an early interest and talent for music, which became his life's career. He studied music at universities in Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, New York and Berlin, Germany. He married Myrtle Ogden in 1906 and together they raised six children. His early career, which focused on establishing music departments in universities, took him from the mid-West to Tucson, Arizona, and back to Pittsburg, Kansas, before moving to Chicago in 1914. He founded the highly-regarded Educational Music Bureau there - right in the Loop. He died in Chicago in 1945 - a time when he was most interested in the war news on the radio - his two sons and one son-in-law were in it. 1882 Guy was born in "Pleasant Hill," near Macy, Miami Co., Indiana, probably at his parents' farm, as their only child. 1885 Myrtle was born near Nekoma, Rush Co., Kansas, probably at her parents' homestead, as the youngest of six daughters. 1887 Myrtle moved with her family to Fulton Co., Indiana (adjacent to Miami Co.) 1895 Myrtle's mother died of tuberculosis and her father moved away. She became the foster child of neighbors, Israel and Elizabeth Keim, who had three sons, then aged 23, 22 and 19 - their two daughters having died young. 1900 Myrtle graduated with honors from elementary school in Fulton Co. Guy served as a census enumerator for that county. 1901 Guy graduated from Rochester Normal University and briefly worked as an assistant instructor there. 1901-1902 Guy attended Cincinnati College of Music in Ohio and supervised music instruction in the Eaton Public Schools. 1902 Guy studied public-school music instruction at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. 1903-1904 Guy received a high school teacher's license and headed the Vocal and Public School Music Departments at Rochester College in Indiana. 1904 Myrtle graduated from Rochester Twp. High School in Fulton Co. 1906 Guy took a summer course at the New School of Methods (public school music) in Chicago, Illinois. In August Guy and Myrtle were married at the Hoover home at Pleasant Hill. 1906-1908 They moved to Tucson, where Guy was Director of Music at the University of Arizona for two academic years. In 1907 Myrtle went to Pleasant Hill for the birth of their first daughter, Melicent Alycia, both of them rejoining Guy afterward. 1908 Guy took another summer course at the New School of Methods and then attended summer school at the Institute for Musical Art at New York University. 1908-1909 In the fall, Guy went to Berlin, Germany, to study for an academic year at the Stern Conservatory. Myrtle and their baby remained at Pleasant Hill. 1909-1914 They moved to Pittsburg, Crawford Co., Kansas, where, for five academic years, Guy was the first Director of Music at the Kansas State Manual Training Normal School (now Pittsburg State University). His students presented operas in several Kansas towns and Guy sang first tenor in concerts in Missouri. They lived at 314 West 1st Street. 1910 Guy compiled and edited The Assembly Hymn and Song Collection, first published in 1912. 1911 Their first son, Maurice Ogden, was born at home. Guy's parents visited the family in Kansas and apparently stayed for two years. 1913 Their second daughter, Jacqueline Mahrea, was born at home. 1914 Guy and Myrtle moved their family to 6948 Powell Ave. on the south side of Chicago. 1916 Guy founded the Educational Music Bureau, a nation-wide distributor of printed music to educational institutions, located eventually at 434 S. Wabash Ave. 1917 Guy's father visited his son's family in Chicago shortly before his death. Guy's mother soon moved in with the family, who relocated to 7155 Lafayette Ave. 1918 Their third daughter, Marcella Jean, was born at home. 1919 Guy received a Doctor of Music degree from Northern Illinois University in Chicago. 1921 Their second son, Charles Guy, Jr., was born at a Chicago hospital. The family moved up the street to a larger house at 6541 Lafayette Ave. 1923 Myrtle's foster father, Israel Keim (born in 1839), died in Fulton, Co. 1927 Their fourth daughter and last child, Carol Ann, was born at a Chicago hospital. 1929 Myrtle's father died in Alabama, where he had raised his second family. 1932 Myrtle's foster mother, Elizabeth (Cook) Keim (born in 1847), died in Fulton Co. 1934 Guy's mother died in Chicago, having lived with her son's family for nearly 17 years. 1936 Guy appeared in the latest edition of Who's Who in Chicago and Vicinity. 1941-1944 Guy took flying lessons, interrupted for two years during the War, and first flew solo in late November 1944, three months before he died. 1945 Guy died of stroke in Chicago, at age 63, before allied victory in World War II. 1951 Myrtle died of cancer in Chicago, at age 66.7 |
