(Witness) Bio[Note this bio has some significant errors (A.F.)]
A. E. Koffel was born east of Rochester, Indiana, in 1858, the son of Daniel and Mary Ann (Hoover) Koffel. His paternal grandparents, Henry and Eliza (Halpooner) Koffel, were natives of Pennsylvania, the father of the former having come from Germany with six brothers to settle there. Henry Koffel and his wife settled in Wabash county, Indiana, and were pioneer farmers of that section where their old home still stands. They had twelve children the last of whom died in 1920 at the age of ninety years. He died in the county of his adoption and is buried in the Nichols cemetery and his wife passed away in Kosciusko county, being buried in the Squirrel Creek cemetery. Henry and Sarah (Curtis) Hoover, the maternal grandparents of our subject, were natives of Tippecanoe county, Indiana, and Miami county, Ohio, respectively. In 1836 they settled in Fulton county near the present town of Athens, which was founded by his sons Jacob and Alonzo. They were one of the first families to settle in that section, and for this reason when Henry township was created, it was named in honor of Henry Hoover. He acquired much land in that part of the county through his untiring industry. He and his wife are buried at Mt Hope. Daniel Koffel was born in I828 and received his education in the pioneer schools of Wabash county. He later removed to Kosciusko county and in 1849 took up his residence in Fulton county, working on the farm of William Rannels east of Athens. Sometime afterward he purchased a farm of eighty acres in that same vicinity and at such an early day he was forced to clear the timber from the land and to make all of the necessary improvements. his wife inherited eighty acres from her father's estate. He died here in 1900, his wife passing away in 1892. He had six children as follows: Sarah Jane; William, who died in infancy; J. F; Emma, deceased; A. E., the subject of this sketch, and Scott, deceased. :A. E. Koffel received his education in the public schools of Athens and then followed the pursuits of agriculture in his home community until the fall of 1881, at which time he removed to his present farm of one hundred and twenty-one acres in Liberty township. He cleared and ditched the land and has placed on it all of the improvements that make it one of the best farms in the township. Although strictly speaking he engages in general farming, he nevertheless devotes considerable attention to stock-raising in which field he has proven very successful. On November 6, 1881, he was united in marriage to Ella Pence, the daughter of John Pence, a prominent pioneer of Fulton county. To Mr. and Mrs. Koffel five children have been born: Roy, Maude, Alfred, Sylvia, and Edna. He and his wife accept the tenets of the United Brethren religion and are devoted members of the church at Fulton.8

(Witness) BioSAMUEL A. HOOVER, deceased, was a native of Indiana, and was born in Fulton county, near Rochester, March 16, 1848, a son of Enos and Rhuanna (SHAW) HOOVER, both of German parentage. In his boyhood days Samuel A. was brought by his parents to Frankfort, where he was educated in the common schools, and where he passed his vacations in the tin shop of his father, learning the trade. At the age of fourteen he began clerking in the clothing house of Givens Bros., with whom he remained several years; later he clerked for several firms, and finally, in the fall of 1869, he began business on his own account, handling clothing and gents' furnishing goods, in which trade, having become very popular, he continued until his untimely death, January 24, 1887. He was always courteous and obliging, made hosts of friends and customers, and rose from a position comparatively at the bottom of the ladder to one of comfort and leadership among his fellow-merchants. He was fraternally an Odd Fellow and Red Man of Frankfort; in politics was a republican, and in religion was an adherent of the Methodist church. Mr. HOOVER was married May 10, 1871, to Miss Mary Elizabeth LEE, daughter of George R. Lee and one of the able lady teachers in the county of Clinton. This lady was born April 1, 1852, and is the eldest daughter in the family of four children born to her parents. The union of Mr. and Mrs. Hoover was blessed by the birth of five children, as follows: Josie Lee, now a teacher in one of the city schools of Frankfort; Homer E., Elbert L., Bertha R. and Helen J. Mrs. Hoover, since the death of her husband, has reared her children in a most genteel manner, and is quite comfortably situated at her home on North Main street, where she is surrounded by a large circle of devoted friends. She is a worthy member of the Methodist Episcopal church, and is also a member of Rebecca lodge, No. 77, which is held under the auspices of the I.0.0.F.
George R. Lee, father of Mrs. Hoover, and a retired merchant of Frankfort, Ind., was born in Warren county, Ohio, September 29, 1835, and is the son of Robert and Mary (JACK) LEE, the former of Scotch-English descent and the latter of Scotch extraction. Mr. Lee at the age of thirteen years came to Indiana with his widowed mother and resided near Frankfort for three years, and then began learning the shoemaker's trade in Frankfort where he has lived ever since. The marriage of Mr. Lee took place September 25, 1847, to Miss Nancy AUGHE, daughter of John F. I. and Elizabeth (BRANARD) AUGHE. This lady was born in Montgomery county, Ohio, near Dayton, October 25, 1858, and came with her parents to Frankfort, Ind., in 1831. To the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Lee were born the following children John Wilson Lee, Mary Elizabeth, Eunice B., and Emma J. Mrs. Lee is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, and has never missed a service for the last ten years; her husband, however, is not a communicant. In politics, Mr. Lee is a stanch republican. pp. 731-732 Source I.3

(Witness) BioHENRY HOOVER, deceased, was born in North Carolina, the date of his birth being September 22, 1788. In 1807 he came West with his father, Andrew Hoover, who settled with his family in Wayne County, Indiana, where our subject subsequently married Susannah Clark. Like the sons of most of the early settlers, his educational advantages were limited, but by reading and study at home he became well fitted for the duties and responsibilities of after life. In 1825 he became a member of the first Legislature that convened at Indianapolis. In 1832 he was appointed by General Lewis Cass, Secretary of War, as secretary to the commission appointed to hold two Indian treaties. After his marriage Mr. Hoover settled in White Water, Wayne County, and in 1830 removed to a farm he had purchased at Nolan’s Forks, in the vicinity of Washington, Wayne County, where his wife died August 9, 1853. In December, 1854, he was married to Mrs. Lydia Z. Vaughan, and in 1855 he removed to Richmond, Wayne County, where he made his home till his death, which occurred July 23, 1868, in his eightieth year. He was reared a Friend, but while living at Nolan’s Forks he united with the Methodist church, of which he was an active and devoted member, but being trained from childhood in the simpler forms of worship, he was pained at the introduction of organs and choirs, and withdrew from the church, and during the last years of his life was a member of the Fifth Street Society of Friends, of Richmond. He was the father of seven children - Alfred, of Kosciusko County; Mary, deceased, wife of David Culbertson, of Mount Vernon, Iowa; Ann, wife of Thomas Harvey, of Wayne County, Indiana; Martha, wife of Daniel Culbertson, of Wayne County; Allen, deceased, late of Mount Vernon, Iowa; Daniel, of Kosciusko County, and Henry, deceased, who was also a resident of Mount Vernon at the time of his death.

HOTELS - HOOVER HOTEL [Akron, Indiana]
__________
Mrs. YEAGLEY, 87, widow of Mathew YEAGLEY, died at her home in Akron Monday after a short illness. Mrs. Yeagley was one of the oldest residents of Henry township. She leaves two children: Mrs. Caroline HOOVER who runs the Hoover hotel, and Kelsey YEAGLEY, a jeweler. Mrs. Yeagley came to this county in 1853, her husband having been killed 20 years ago by a falling tree. She at one time resided in Rochester. She was of German descent and a member of the Methodist church, the place of the funeral Wednesday morning, Rev. G. E. HUGHES officiating.
[Rochester Sentinel, Tuesday, May 25, 1915]

HOOVER HOTEL IS CLOSED
The Hoover House, at Akron, famous in this section of the state for years, as a good place to secure a real meal, passed into history last week, when Mrs. Caroline HOOVER sold the hotel furniture at a public sale. A large crowd attended. Mrs. Hoover closed the hotel last November and will now rent or sell the place. Mr. and Mrs. Hoover took possession of the hotel 30 years ago, when good meals were served for a quarter and board and room by the week was only $2.50. For years they did a
flourishing business, the hotel getting a wide reputation because of its well cooked, substantial meals. In later years prices were raised and when Mrs. Hoover closed, meals were being served for 60 cents. David Hoover died seven years ago.
[Rochester Sent inel, Friday, September 19, 1919]

Akron also had an earlier hotel for many years known as the Hoover Hotel, located on the west side of the present site of the Akron Town Clerk’s Office, (former post office) now a parking lot. This building was torn down in 1949 after being the Legion Home for some years. The Hoover Hotel was just before my time although I often remember hearing it mentioned. My first memory of the building was when it was occupied by Kelsy Yeagley’s Watch Repair. He lived in the rearof the building.
[Thomas Carpenter Family, Walter F. Carpenter, Fulton Co Folks, Vol. 2, Willard]

John Cutshall ran a hotel in the early days of Akron where the parking lot by the Akron Bank is now (north side of Rochester Street one-half block west of SR14 and SR19). There is a photo of this hotel on p. 3 of Fulton Co Folks, Vol. 1. Ina Brundige wrote the following in her history of Akron in 1923: “In the 1840’s John Cutshall kept a tavern or hotel that was located where the Nordmann house is. That became a good location. While in the Cutshall name a traveler was there a short time, who complained of a boil on his lip. In the proper time of exposure the entire household became smallpox patients. There was an epidemic and several deaths occurred in the village, among whom were Jacob Pentz and William Bower.” In the 1850’s the McClouds operated the same hotel. They were succeeded some years after by the Andrew Kuhn family and still later by the Andrew Strong family in the 1870’s. James Kuhn, a son of Andrew, David Hoover and wife later purchased it and made repairs; it became famous for its
generous hospitality. This same building became the American Legion Home and was torn down in 1949 to make a parking lot.
