Obit | Wanda Mae's obituary was published in the Anchorage Daily News on 25 November 2006: Wanda Ervin Brown, 82, died Oct. 21, 2006, of natural causes at the Anchorage Pioneers' Home. A reception will be at 1 p.m. today at the Anchorage Pioneers' Home in the Tundra Lounge on the fifth floor. Mrs. Brown was born April 10, 1924, in Texas and was raised in Santa Barbara, Calif. She graduated from Santa Barbara High School in 1942 and worked as a welder in the shipyards of Oakland, Calif., during World War II. In Oakland, she met her future husband, Stanley Brown. They were married in 1943, and in 1946 moved to Fairbanks with their first child. They had seven more children in the years to follow. Mrs. Brown was an avid bowler in her early years in Fairbanks and enjoyed sewing, knitting and spending Wednesday nights at Sewing Club. She was a lifelong member of Pioneers Auxiliary 8. After Stanley became a partner in the Paxson Lodge in 1959, Mrs. Brown spent her winters in Fairbanks raising her children so they could attend school, with the entire family spending summers in Paxson working at the lodge. During the late '60s, Mrs. Brown worked for the Tanana Valley Medical Clinic in Fairbanks, retiring in 1982. She then lived in Paxson, working full time until the lodge was sold in 1996. In 2001, the Browns relocated to Anchorage, moving into the Anchorage Pioneers' Home in 2002. "Wanda will be remembered by her family and friends as a warm and humorous woman, kind-hearted and strong-willed," her family said. "Her open door policy with never-ending hugs was there for anyone in need. Even in her final years, Wanda's appreciation for music and laughter were evident to those who love her." She is survived by her husband, Stanley Brown of Anchorage; children and their spouses, Kris and Murray Howk, Gary Brown, Pat Williams and Don Pierce, Stan Brown, Stephanie and Brad King, David Brown, and Amy and Steve Rhodes, all of Alaska; 19 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, James Brown.4 |
