(Witness) Bio | Isaac W. BEMENDERFER, furniture dealer and undertaker, Morocco, began business in 1873, which was solely undertaking, until 1881, when he opened his present store, and added a stock of furniture. He is doing a good business and has as large and well selected a stock as can be found in the country. From 1874 to 1880, he had D. M. Pulver associated with him as partner. Mr. Bemenderfer is a native of Stark County, Ohio, was born September 4, 1840, and is one of nine children of William and Sophia (Lichtenwalter) Bemenderfer, the latter a native of Pennsylvania, the former of Maryland, from which State he came, when quite young, with his parents to Virginia, where he grew to manhood, when he went to Starkl County, Ohio, where he married and remained until 1853, when he came to Fulton County, Indiana, where he owned a farm until his death, January 27, 1881. His wife still lives on the same farm. Isaac remained at home attending the common schools until twenty-one, where he rented and worked farms until 1869, after which he learned the carpenter's trade, which he has followed more or less since. He came to Newton County in the spring of 1865, and rented various farms until the fall of 1869, when he came to Morocco. November 9, 1861, he enlisted in Company K, Forty-sixth Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and served with the regiment until discharged on account of sickness, in July, 1862. He was married, April 8, 1863, to Melissa A. Enslen, a native of Allen County, Ohio, and a daughter of Frederick and Anna (Burch) Enslen. Eleven children have been born to them, six of whom--Mary E., Elida L., Melville E., Lillie D., Ionia and Ted--are living. He and his wife are both members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He is superintendent of the Sunday school, and leader of the choir at Morocco. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and an Odd Fellow. He has been Justice of the Peace for four years. In politics, he has been since the War a Republican; previous to that time, was a Democrat. He is one of the prominent men of the township and county. Harrison Ave., Wabash, died at 5:50 a.m Tuesday at his residence. He was born in Miami County to Donald C. and Nona TRACY BURCH. On June 22, 1929, in Columbia City, he married Mable KRATHWOHL, who survives He retired from General Tire & Rubber Co., Wabash, in 1969 after 17 years, and was a farmer. He was a member of the Wabash Friends Church, Wabash Senior Citizen Club, a charter member of the Wabash AARP, Wabash County Farm Bureau, and the General Tire Retirees Club. He moved to Wabash in 1981 from rural North Manchester, and lived in Wabash County since 1941, having come from Fulton County. Surviving with his wife are one son, Robert L. BURCH, Wabash; three brothers, Vores L “Bud” BURCH and Harvey BURCH, both of North Manchester; and Gene BURCH, Rochester; two sisters, Mrs. Galen (Geneva) GRONINGER, Plainfield; and Mrs. Robert (Nina) DeFORD, North Manchester; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Preceding in death were four brothers. Services will be at 10 a.m Saturday at Manchester Avenue Chapel, Grandstaff-Hentgen, Wabash, with the Rev. David PHILLIPS officiating. Burial will be in the Falls Cemetery, Wabash. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral chapel.6 |

Mr. Groninger was a heavy equipment salesman for J.D. Adams, Indianapolis from 1936-46. He founded, owned and operated Groninger Excavating, Plainfield from 1946-85. Active in community affairs, he was a member of the Plainfield United Methodist Church and Plainfield Masonic Lodge 653 Free and Accepted Masons, where he was a 50-year member and past master. He served on the Plainfield School Advisory Board from 1949-53. Survivors include two sons, Richard D. GRONINGER, Pittsburgh, Pa., and Donald L. GRONINGER, Plainfield; two daughters, Nora J. WARE and Judy A. HOLZKNECHT, both of Plainfield; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a nephew, Alan BURKE, Rochester. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Gloria KAYS. Services were held at Plainfield United Methodist Church. Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery, Plainfield. Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home, Plainfield, handled arrangements.4 |

Obit | Henry Edward's obituary was published in the Rochester Sentinel on 5 June 1914: County Commissioner Henry E. CAMERER is dead. The well known citizen passed away Thursday afternoon at his home south of Rochester, after a very short illness. A week ago last Tuesday evening he took sick with stomach and bowel trouble. He became steadily worse despite the aid of several physicians and died amid great suffering, age 58 years. Edward CAMERER, as he was known to every one, was well known over the county. A year ago last fall he was elected on the Democratic ticket for the second time as commissioner from the first district. His first term was highly satisfactory as he made a splendid showing as a public servant. Henry E. Camerer was born in Rush county, Indiana, and moved to this county with his parents when he was three years old. Early in life he purchased a farm south of Rochester where he lived for thirty years. When about twenty-two years of age he was married to Miss Anne HOOVER. To this union four children were born. John [CAMERER] and Nellie CAMERER died about nine years ago, age 25 and 22. Two children survive, Mrs. Carrie GINTHER of Louisville, Kentucky, and Fred CAMERER. Mr. Camerer leaves two sisters and one brother, Mrs. Hattie QUICK, Mrs. Minnie BLACKBURN and Omer G. CAMERER. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o‘clock at the Methodist church in Rochester. Saturday, June 6, 1914 The funeral of County Commissioner Henry E. CAMERER will be held Sunday at 2 o’clock at the Methodist chuch.2 |

McMAHAN, 82, lifetime Rochester resident, who long was prominent in civic, governmental and political affairs of the city and county. Mr. McMahan died Thursday at 12:45 p.m. in Woodlawn hospital, where he had been a patient since Feb. 3. He resided at 404 West Ninth street. The Rev. Hugh STEWART will officiate at rites, assisted by the Rochester Masonic lodge, and burial will be in the I.O.O.F. cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home. Mr. McMahan had a long and varied career in public and business life. He was both principal and school teacher during his early years, served two terms as Fulton county auditor, was postmaster of the Rochester postoffice, and was county chairman of the Democratic party, in the affairs of which he was actively interested all his life. In 1930, he purchased the Arlington hotel in this city and operated the business until 1942. The building was sold two years later. An active member of the United Presbyterian church here, he served as a Sunday School teacher and was an elder at the time of his death. Mr. McMahan also belonged to the Rochester Masonic lodge. One of a family of 12 children, he was born six miles southwest of the city in the Antioch community on Aug. 11, 1882, the son of John B. and Rebecca GOSS McMAHAN. His first marriage was April 12, 1904, to Edith HOOVER, who died Feb. 22, 1934. His second marriage was Jan. 10, 1936 to Gertrude DAVIS FITZELL, who died Oct. 30, 1958. On Nov. 24, 1963, he was married to Frances ELLIOTT HENDRICKSON, who survives. Also surviving are one son, H. Emerson [McMAHAN], Rensselaer; one daughter, Mrs. Will J. (Eve) DELANEY, Michigan City; two stepchildren, Mrs. C. R. WINELAND, Monticello, and George HENDRICKSON, Kewanna; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and six step-grandchildren. One son, Dean [McMAHAN], died in 1931. One sister, Miss Jessie McMAHAN, Pacific Palisades, Cal., also survives. Brothers and sisters preceding in death were Otto, William, Patrick, John, James and Thomas McMAHAN, and Mrs. Omer (Lora) SMITH, Mrs. John (Daisy) SCHAFF, Mrs. Mel (Josie) HAY and Mrs. Del (Sally) BLACK.10 |

Obit | Charles W.'s obituary was published in the an unknown place on 10 September 1920: Charles W. HOOVER, 62, died Thursday at his home at 1209 63rd street, Chicago, a victim of hardening of the arteries from which he had been suffering for some time. Mr. Hoover was a former resident of this city where for a number of years he had conducted a grocery store on North Main street. He is survived by a son, Harry HOOVER, also a former resident, who now lives in Arkansas, and a daughter, Mrs. Elva JOHNSON, of this city. The body arrived here Thursday evening for burial at Mt. Hope cemetery. Funeral services Saturday afternoon at the Athens church at 2:30 o’clock.9 |
