Mr. Hoover was one of the pioneers of this county; he moved here from Miami county, Ohio, in 1836, and has since made this his home. Not having received the particulars of his life, we are unable to write a very extended obituary, but have reason to believe from what we have learned incidentally, that he was an industrious, temperate, and religious man, a kind, devoted husband and a loving, exemplary father, and died in high hope of heaven. The wife, children and relatives of the deceased desire us to express their thankfulness to the neighbors and friends for their kindness and assistance during his illness and burial.
Rochester Sentinel Saturday, 15 November 1873 Mr. Henry Hoover, an old pioneer of this country, well and favorably known to most of the citizens of the county, died at his residence, six miles east of Rochester, on the Akron Road, on Sunday last, and was buried on Tuesday.8 |

Henry Hoover was one of the first three settlers in Henry township. He located where the family residence has since been, at what is now Hoover's Station , on the C. & A. R.R., in March 1837, within a yer of the date of the organization of the county. There he made a good valuable farm and home. There the children grew up, and at and near there, four sons and two daughters have their homes. One son resides in Kansas. In the history of the Hoover family we have in a measure the history of Fulton county from the beginning. Three brothers and one sister of Mrs. Hoover also reside in Fulton county.
Mrs. Hoover had survived her husband almost 13 years. During these years her younger daughter and son remained with her, and rendered her help and comfort. Especially during the many months of her confinement by infirmity and sickness have they shown their fidelity and love. Mrs. Hoover's life was adorned by many domestic and kindly virtues. While able she was much in the habit of reading the Bible, and when no longer able, her son often comforted her by reading to her. Some years ago she asked and received Christian baptism. Funeral services were held at the adjacent brick church. A large and interested audience was present.
Died - Mrs. Sarah Hoover, one of the early settlers of this county, died at the old Hoover homestead near Hoovers Station 5 miles east of Rochester, last Saturday. The funeral was held Monday and was largely attended by her many acquaintances.9 |
NoteB* | HOOVER STATION [Henry township] Later named Athens. Henry Hoover, born 1807, was a first cousin (once removed) to the founder of Millark. He founded Hoover’s Station, now known as Athens, in 1837. The Athens cemetery [Mt. Hope] was originally called Hoover cemetery because the land was donated by him. There was an inn one-half mile east of Hoover’s Station (now Athens) and this is where tired coach horses were exchanged for ones that were rested for the next part of the trip. Mr. Hoover was ill during most of last winter but rallied in the spring and was thought to be getting along nicely. However, early this morning he was seized by a sudden attack of heart trouble and passed away. Mr. Hoover was well known in this city, having made many business trips here and his many friends join the relatives in their sorrow. Besides a wife, he leaves one son, Roy Hoover, at home, and three brothers, Alonzo Hoover, Kokomo; William Hoover, Carthage, Missouri, and Jacob Hoover, this city. The funeral of Frank Hoover wiol be held at the Athens church Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Dixon having charge of the services. Burial will be made in Athens cemetery.8 |

(Witness) Bio | JAMES W. HURST, grain merchant, farmer, and stock raiser, at Macy, is a native of Piqua County, Ohio, and was born September 28, 1839. He was the youngest son born to William and Sarah (Alkire) Hurst, the former a native of Maryland, of English descent, and the latter a native of Kentucky, of German descent. At the tender age of two years James was left without a father, and in 1845 his widowed mother came with her children to this county, and located, first, at Peru. In the spring of 1846 the family located upon a farm in Richland Township. A year later they located in Allen Township, where the mother had pre-empted an eighty acres tract of land. There James spent his early life working upon the farm. During the winter of 1859-60 he taught school. At the age of twenty-three he engaged in the mercantile business in Chili. A few months later he located upon a farm in Allen Township, where he engaged in agricultural pursuits until the fall of 1867, at which time he located in Macy and erected the first business house in the town. In that building he placed a stock of goods, and during the ten years that followed his attention was simultaneously given to merchandising, the buying and selling of grain and to farming. Since 1877 his attention has been divided between the last two. He was married to Romannia C Hoover, April 12, 1876. Their marriage has resulted in the birth of eight children. They are Earl J., Eva M., Scott J., Herd J., an infant daughter, and three children that died in infancy unnamed. Mr. and Mrs. Hurst are members of the Christian Church. The former is a member of the F. & A.M. lodge at Macy, which he served as its First Master. Politically he is a Republican. He was elected to the office of County Commissioner in 1878, and served one term. In that capacity he discharged his duties with credit to himself and satisfaction to his constituents.
