(Witness) Census | He appeared on the census of 20 June 1880 Rochester Twp., Fulton, Indiana, in the household of Samuel W. Shields; page 74B, occupation butcher, 5 children at home.1 |
Death* | Levi N. (Lee) Shields died on 17 October 1914 at Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana; no burial record found.2 |
Obit | Levi N. (Lee)'s obituary was published in the Rochester Sentinel on 21 October 1914: Special to the Sentinel Akron, Ind., Oct 19 -- Miss Fannie SHIELDS was notified early Saturday morning that her brother was in an Indianapolis hospital with both legs severed, the result of a railway accident. Miss Shields and Mrs. Dora BRIGHT left at once for the city and telegraphed back later that Mr. Shields was dead. It is supposed the body will be brought here for burial. Lee N. Shields was a twin brother to Bessie SHIELDS, who died not long ago. He was also a nephew of Scott SHIELDS of this city, and for many years made his home here. For a long time he was missing, but was finally located in the West.
Special to the Sentinel Indianapolis, Ind., Oct 21 -- Coroner DURHAM is conducting an investigation of the death of Nathan Lee SHIELDS, 37, who died at the Deaconess hospital Saturday, supposedly from injuries suffered when run down by an inbound Pennsylvania train near Plainfield that morning. Shields’ legs were cut off and it was supposed this caused his death. When Coroner Durham began his investigation, however, he found three knife wounds on the body, one deep one near the heart. It is thought that Shields, realizing after he was run down that he would be crippled for life, stabbed himself in an effort at suicide. A bloody knife was found in his coat pocket. According to his brother, Shields had brooded over the death of a sister, Miss Bessie [SHIELDS], who died last spring. Another theory is advanced that Shields was stabbed and then thrown under the train. His brother, Fred [SHIELDS], who lives in Indianapolis, swears that he never saw the knife before, and that he gave his brother another knife not long ago. Shields appears to have been something of a man of mystery. He lived in Indianapolis until about fifteen years ago. Then he disappeared, asserting that he was going to the West to seek his fortune. His brother, according to the statement made to the coroner, heard nothing from him until about two years ago. Then he got into communication with the wanderer, and prevailed on him to come home. He arrived here in June in response to the appeals of his brother. Three weeks later his sister died. Miss Fannie SHIELDS, a sister, of Akron, Ind., is here and will take charge of the body after the investigation is finished. Trainmen were to be examined today.
Saturday, July 18, 1913 Went West to Make Stake Word has been received by relatives in Rochester to the effect that Lee SHIELDS, who disappeared about fifteen years ago, is not dead, as was thought by many, but alive and well. Lee is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Samuel SHIELDS, and was born and raised in Rochester. About fifteen years ago, with his sisters he moved to Denver, and then to Portland, Ore., returning from there to Rochester. He left the home one day, saying he would not return till he had The Rochester Sentinel - 1913 made a “stake.” About two years ago he was seen on the street in Denver by Fred IZZARD, which has been the only word of him till today. This morning a letter was received by Scott SHIELDS, his uncle, from a former Rochester man, whose identity Mr. Shields does not wish to divulge, saying that Lee was in a city in the West. Mr. Shields wrote immediately to the postmaster of the western city, with a letter enclosed to Lee. The parents of the young man both died about ten years ago, but he has a sister in Akron.3 |
