(Witness) Bio | DR. F.B. THOMAS, a native of Baltimore, Md., and one of the earliest settlers of Winamac, was born March 10, 1820, and in 1834 emigrated West with his parents to Fayette County, Ind. Under the tuition of his father, he read medicine, and in 1845 located in Winamac for the practice of his profession, in partnership with a brother. For thirty-five years, Dr. Thomas has been an active practitioner of the county, and in this time has become acquainted with almost every family in the county. In 1853, he was elected to represent the counties of Pulaski and Jasper in the Indiana State Legislature, but never allowed his name to be used in connection with any other office. In 1861, he raised Company H, was elected their Captain, and was mustered into the service with the Forty-sixth Indiana Volunteers. At Riddle’s Point, on the Mississippi River, he was compelled to leave the service on account of rheumatism. He returned home, became editor of the Winamac Democrat, having also acted as editor before going out in the service, and for a period of twenty-six years has been the life of that paper. He is the only person in Winamac, except one man, who has resided here since his first location.

Death resulted from paralysis and accompanying diseases inherent with advanced years. The deceased had been a resident of Henry township throughout his entire life with the exception of a few years. Alvin Clarence, son of George and Nancy BURNS, was born on a farm west of Akron on May 2, 1858. In March of the year 1881 he was united in marriage to Sarah WHITCOMB. Until ill health prevented, Mr. Burns followed the trade of a decorator and painter throughout the eastern part of the county where he had a wide acquaintance of friends. Survivors are the widow, a son, Carl BURNS, of Chicago, and two grandchildren. Funeral services in charge of Rev. Daniel SLAYBAUGH will be held Friday afternoon at two o’clock at the Akron Saints Church. Burial will be made in the I.O.O.F. cemetery at Akron.2 |
Obit | Alvin Clarence's obituary was published in the Akron News on 2 June 1932: Alvin Burns Dies Following Long Illness. A period of ill health of eight and one-half years duration, climaxed by a second paralytic stroke two weeks ago brought about the death of Alvin Burns, 74, Wednesday afternoon about 4:00. Mr. Burns had been at the point of death since the last stroke, which left him helpless and speechless, and had been unconscious since Monday afternoon. Alvin Clarence Burns was born on May 29, 1858, to George and Nancy Burns, on the farm where James Curtis now lives. In March 1881, he was married to Miss Sallie Whitcomb. His entire life was spent in Akron, with the exception of a short time in Chicago, and a few years in Rochester. Mr. Burns worked as a painter and decorator, and was known about here as an artist in his trade. His active life was curtailed by his first paralytic stroke eight and one-half years ago, but he had recovered from that sufficiently to be about, though he could not work. A son, Carl, of Chicago, besides the widow, survives. Three other children are deceased. A brother, Will, died several years ago. There are also two grandchildren, Billy and Virginia Burns. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 2:00 at the home. Rev. D.L. Slaybaugh will officiate. Burial will be in the Odd Fellows cemetery.1 |
