Obit | Madison C.'s obituary was published in the Rochester Sentinel on 27 April 1923: Mont CONRAD, a farmer residing about a mile south of Fulton, and a brother of John CONRAD, was fatally injured Thursday afternoon about two o’clock when a rock weighing more than a ton fell into a hole which Conrad was digging, in which to bury it. The farmer was pinned beneath the rock. His lower limbs were crushed terribly and he died later while being taken to Logansport in an ambulance. Conrad’s son, Glenn, age about 17 years, was plowing in the field where Mr. Conrad was preparing to get the boulder out of the way. He did not see the rock topple into the hole onto his father but rushed to the scene a minute later when he noticed both his father and the rock out of sight. The injured man was held fast under the weight for more than two hours while the son and neighbors, who were called, worked frantically to free him. Mr. Conrad was conscious when extricated and talked coherently. When it was seen that he was so seriously injured, Dr. DILLMAN, Fulton, who was called, ordered him taken to the St. Joseph hospital at Logansport and an ambulance was called. The trip was only started when death came. The body was taken back to the home. Dr. Dillman states that the shock and pain of the injuries caused death. Mort [sic] CONRAD was 48 years of age. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Ella CONRAD, one son, Glenn [CONRAD], two daughters Bernice [CONRAD] and Esther CONRAD, a brother, John CONRAD, a sister, Mrs. Emma FULTZ and the father, Daniel CONRAD, all residents of this county.4 |

(Witness) Bio | HARRY AND LEONA JESSEN Our family history began with Herman Johansen and Ella Jorgensen coming to the United States from Denmark. Herman came to the States in 1887 and Ella in 1898. They met in Plainview and married in 1901, and eventually settled on a farm three miles south and 41/2 miles west of Plainview. Herman and Ella's eight children were born there, the second youngest was Vernon. In 1900 Ray Boies was born in Stafford, Nebraska, and Susie Otto was born in Petersburg. Ray moved to Plainview when he was 13 and later met Susie at a picnic in Young's Park near Creighton. They were married on Valentine's Day in 1923 and had three daughters, the oldest being Leona. Vernon Johansen and Leona Boies met at a dance in Plainview just after Vernon returned from serving four years in the Army during World War II. After dating almost a year, Vernon and Leona were married in October, 1946. They lived on the Herman Johansen farm for one year and then lived in the Tilden, Neligh and Plainview areas before buying their own farm 4'/2 miles west and one mile south of Plainview. Vernon and Leona had two daughters: Sandra (Mrs. Everett Anderson) is now living in Omaha and has three children; and Sally (Mrs. Alvin Hoefer) lives in Petersburg and has four children. Vernon passed away in September, 1961 at the age of 43. Leona and the girls moved into Plainview and lived in a house that her parents owned. Leona married Harry Jessen in December, 1966. They lived in Veneta, Oregon, along with Harry's four children: Judy (Mrs. Bill Ruth) of Plainview has four children; Joanne (Mrs. Jim Dockerty) of Roseburg, Oregon, has two children; Jerald of Norfolk; and Janine (Mrs. Larry Cox) of Neligh has three children. After living in Veneta for 11/2 years, Harry and Leona moved to Plainview in 1968 and owned the Plainview Roller Rink until 1974. They now live on the outskirts of town and raise a few hogs and a huge garden. Their combined families have given them 16 grandchildren.3 |
