(Witness) Bio | RAY AND SUSIE BOIES Raymond James Boies was born at Stafford, Nebraska, on May 8, 1901, to Charles and Maud (Shobe) Boies. He was the second oldest of eight children. The family moved to Antelope County in 1914. Ray worked for several farmers in the area: Ansel Watson, Clint Christiansen, Vernon Munger, J. W. Otto, and others. Susan Sarah Otto was born at Petersburg, Nebraska, on January 24, 1900, to J. W. and Mattie (Adams) Otto. Her family moved to Pierce County in 1910. They attended school at District 65. Ray and Susie met at Young's Park. They enjoyed going to barn dances and in later years other dances with old friends. They went courting in a horse and buggy. On February 14, 1923, they were married at the bride's parents' home. They started housekeeping on the Benedict place, six miles south of Plainview. Later they moved to the Fred Pilger farm where in 1927 they had the misfortune of losing their house and belongings in a fire. They moved to Susie's folks' other farm and lived there for 16 years. In 1942 they moved in with Susie's dad to keep house for him until his death January 1,1945. Ray and Susie purchased a farm 21/2 miles south of Plainview in 1946. They lived there until they sold it to Larry Foster and moved to Plainview in 1981. Ray took pride in his farming and enjoyed feeding cattle and raising hogs. He retired from farming in 1964 and rented his farm out. He worked in the veterinary office for six years. Susie was a dedicated housewife and mother and was always happy with what she had and was doing. Ray and Susie have been married 62 years and have enjoyed life. They both like to reminisce about old times and the many friends they have met over the years. They have seen many changes take place: from horse and buggy to men going to the moon, the depression, banks going broke and losing their savings, to happy and prosperous: times. Ray is amazed at the many changes in agriculture and how expensive everything is. He was proud of being a farmer and in 1980 he gave his grandson, Steve, a keepsake, an F12 tractor like he used back in 1933. They are always ready to lend a helping hand to their family, neighbors and friends and enjoy company and playing cards. They are members of the Congregational Church, where Susie is active in the Women's Fellowship. They have three daughters: Leona Jessen (Harry), Norma White (Don) of Plainview, Phyllis Steinkraus (Wendell) of Tilden; five grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and nine step-great grandchildren.
