(Witness) Bio | History of Carroll County, Indiana with Illustrations and Biographical Sketches; Chicago, Kingman Brothers, 1882 - page 255 DEER CREEK TOWNSHIP CORBLY M. KNIGHT The ancestry of Mr. Knight remotely, were of Irish and Scotch extraction. His parents, however, were of that stalwart Pennsylvania stock which furnished so many of the early settlers of Indiana when strong men were required to change her ancient woodlands to productive farms and happy homes. The subject of this biography was born in Miami County, Ohio, December 14, 1823. While yet a lad, his parents, John and Abigail Knight, moved to Carroll County and purchased the farm yet owned by Mr. Knight, east of the fair grounds, reaching their future home November 17, 1828. There was an abundance of hard to be done in developing the farm, and to this end he bent his youthful energy. His father died in December, 1837, at the age of fifty-eight, and the responsibilities of managing the farm rested then upon his shoulders. He was equal to all emergencies, however, and rapidly the forest gave way to fields of ripening grain. Mr. Knight continued to farm until in the year 1866, when he purchased the hotel property in Delphi and has continued the hotel business to the present time. He has in all these years been one of the foremost men of the city and country in affairs of public moment. He was for six years a member of the City Council and , while occupying this official relation to the city, he did a great work in behalf of he improvement of the streets and the enlargement of the city limits. He was the Chairman of the Special Committee of Annexation of Territory to the City, and while in this most delicate and highly responsible position, he pursued the line of duty without fear, favor or partiality. He was a stanch friend to the great enterprises of building the Chicago & Indianapolis Air Line Railway, and in the dark days of the enterprises, he in common with a few other of our citizens, gave it a material aid, which added new life and vigor, and rescued it from impending defeat and ruin. Mr. Knight is a man of strong impulses, and very positive in his likes and dislikes, In 1855, he conceived a favorable opinion of Odd Fellowship and on July 15 of that year, he united with Delphi Lodge No. 28. He rapidly passed the graduations of the order, and June 27, 1859, he was elected Noble Grand. In November of the year following, he was admitted to membership in Carroll Encampment, No. 22. He pursued the work in this branch with a zeal equal to that manifested in the subordinate lodge, and in rapid succession he filled the various official stations requisite, and was admitted to the Grand Encampment in the State grand bodies. He is an enthusiastic member of Adina Lodge, No. 79, D of R. When Delphi Lodge No. 28, determined to build the new hall which adorns another page of this work, he was appointed to a position on the Building Committee. In this work he engaged with much enthusiasm, and his watchful interest saved the order no small sum of money. Mr. Knight has been twice married, first to Miss Isabelle Robeson, April 16, 1846, who died April 22, 1850, second to Miss Sarah J. Griffith, October 16, 1851, who is yet living. His mother died November 12, 1868, aged eighty two years. The subject of this sketch is hail and hearty, and has yet promise of years of active service in life's toil and turmoil. |
Death* | He died on 6 February 1894 at Carroll, Indiana, at age 70; buried in the Odd Fellow's Cemetery (no date on marker.)5,2 |

(Witness) Bio | THE GILBERT J. ALEXANDER FAMILY Gilbert J. Alexander, son of William and Ann Alexander, was born December 1, 1877, near Westfield, Wisconsin. He was the youngest of 11 children and came to Nebraska when he was two years old in a covered wagon with his parents and another family. His parents took a homestead four miles south of Plainview with a schoolhouse just across the road, and that is where Gib, as he was known to his friends, spent the night of the blizzard of 1888. He could have gone home, but, since his mother prepared food for the teacher and other pupils, it was fun to spend the night there too. As a young man he spent many days in the hay fields, sweeping hay for 50 cents a day. When his father moved to town to run a livery stable, Gib helped there, and he also worked in the bakery, which was owned by his brother-in-law, Sam Johnson. On April 23, 1913 Gib was married to Effie Otto, eldest daughter of J. W. and Mattie Otto, at her parents' home five miles south of Plainview. They lived on a farm northwest of Plainview for about three years, then they bought a farm on the Willow Creek, south of Plainview. For a few years prices were good and they, along with the neighbor's help, would haul their livestock in wagons to Copenhagen to catch the train for market. Gib loved to hear the first birds of the spring, and never failed to go to the sand hills south of the farm to pick wild sweetpeas to take to the cemetery on Memorial Day. There was just Memorial Park Cemetery then, but he always walked up one row of stones and down the other, always stopping at the one the school teacher had erected in memory of her pupils who had lost their lives in the blizzard of '88. Gib and Effie's home was always open to anyone passing by for a little cup of coffee. Effie chopped a lot of the wood for her cookstove with an ax and carried the water, two pails at a time, for all the needs. But there was always something good from the oven, probably a cake made with a cup of cream. There were lots of relatives, and with five children, the table was always full. When the bank failed and there was no price for anything, they sold the farm and moved a couple of more times before finally making their home five miles south of Plainview. Gib and Effie enjoyed the rural school Christmas programs, box socials, and especially the picnics on the last day of school, when everybody took lots to eat and played ball in the afternoon. They are both deceased and buried in Pleasant View Cemetery. Their five children are: Jane Harris in Pico Rivera, California; Genevieve Snodgrass, living south of Royal; Thelma Johnson, living in Plainview; Dennis, living in Norfolk; and Lela Meirose, living in Aberdeen, South Dakota.10 |

(Witness) Bio | RAY AND SUSIE BOIES Raymond James Boies was born at Stafford, Nebraska, on May 8, 1901, to Charles and Maud (Shobe) Boies. He was the second oldest of eight children. The family moved to Antelope County in 1914. Ray worked for several farmers in the area: Ansel Watson, Clint Christiansen, Vernon Munger, J. W. Otto, and others. Susan Sarah Otto was born at Petersburg, Nebraska, on January 24, 1900, to J. W. and Mattie (Adams) Otto. Her family moved to Pierce County in 1910. They attended school at District 65. Ray and Susie met at Young's Park. They enjoyed going to barn dances and in later years other dances with old friends. They went courting in a horse and buggy. On February 14, 1923, they were married at the bride's parents' home. They started housekeeping on the Benedict place, six miles south of Plainview. Later they moved to the Fred Pilger farm where in 1927 they had the misfortune of losing their house and belongings in a fire. They moved to Susie's folks' other farm and lived there for 16 years. In 1942 they moved in with Susie's dad to keep house for him until his death January 1,1945. Ray and Susie purchased a farm 21/2 miles south of Plainview in 1946. They lived there until they sold it to Larry Foster and moved to Plainview in 1981. Ray took pride in his farming and enjoyed feeding cattle and raising hogs. He retired from farming in 1964 and rented his farm out. He worked in the veterinary office for six years. Susie was a dedicated housewife and mother and was always happy with what she had and was doing. Ray and Susie have been married 62 years and have enjoyed life. They both like to reminisce about old times and the many friends they have met over the years. They have seen many changes take place: from horse and buggy to men going to the moon, the depression, banks going broke and losing their savings, to happy and prosperous: times. Ray is amazed at the many changes in agriculture and how expensive everything is. He was proud of being a farmer and in 1980 he gave his grandson, Steve, a keepsake, an F12 tractor like he used back in 1933. They are always ready to lend a helping hand to their family, neighbors and friends and enjoy company and playing cards. They are members of the Congregational Church, where Susie is active in the Women's Fellowship. They have three daughters: Leona Jessen (Harry), Norma White (Don) of Plainview, Phyllis Steinkraus (Wendell) of Tilden; five grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and nine step-great grandchildren. By Norma White.7 |
