Obit | Vernon E.'s obituary was published in the Morgan Messenger on 6 April 1944: Vernon E. Johnson, prominent civic, business and political leader and former speaker of the West Virginia house of delegates, died early Tuesday morning, April 4, in a hospital in Charleston where he had been stricken while on a campaign tour in the interests of his present candidacy for the Republican nomination for State Auditor. Johnson, 63, became ill on Monday of the week before from a liver ailment while he and Mrs. Johnson were in the State capital. Long a leader in Republican politics, he was well known throughout West Virginia through his two terms as speaker of the house, 1915-17 and 1927-29, and his service as Collector of Internal Revenue for West Virginia from 1929 to 1933. He also was chairman of the State Game and Fish Commission and was the Republican nominee for State Auditor in 1936 but was defeated in the Democratic landslide of that year. He was interested in affairs of the town and it was due to his efforts that the State bass hatchery was located in this county, at Ridge and the new modern bath house was built in the State Park here. For many years he had been a member of Deford Masonic Lodge. He was born in Berkeley Springs May 22, 1880, son of John W. Johnson, a prominent merchant, and Eliza Bechtol Johnson. He was given a business training at Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and then returned here. He was chairman of the Morgan County Draft Board in the First World War, served as a Presidential elector in 1920, and was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1928. He was first elected to the legislature in 1911. His three surviving sons are all now in the armed services although two of them, Lt. (sg) Richard Johnson of the Naval Air Corps who was stationed on the Pacific coast and Private David Johnson of the Marines, San Diego, Calif., were with their father when he died. The third son, Lt. Philip E. Johnson, is on duty with the Army Air Forces in the Pacific. Other survivors are his widow, the former Miss Ethel Harmison, and a daughter by his first marriage, Mrs. Henry N. Gorrell of Berkeley Springs. Johnson's first wife was the former Miss Willy M. Rice, who died 15 years after their marriage. A brother, Ernest L. Johnson, died less than two years ago. Funeral services were conducted Thursday at 3 p.m., at the home with burial in Greenway Cemetery. The Rev. Temple G. Wheeler, former rector of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, now of St. Andrews on the Mountain, near Charles Town, and the Rev. H.H. Rowland, of the Methodist Church were in charge of the services. Pallbearers were John P. Webster, H.D. Beeler, J.A. Proctor, Reid Johnson, Gracen Heare and W.G. Harmison.10 |

Fourteen months ago he was first stricken by paralysis. After being confined to his bed for many weeks he improved sufficiently to be up and around the house and later took short walks. The attack Sunday night came suddenly and in a short time he became unconscious remaining so until the end. A number of years ago he was engaged in the mercantile business which he gave up to become the pioneer in the automobile business in Morgan county. This was about 1906. Later he took the Overland agency. He, with his brother, Vernon E. Johnson, owned the first automobile in Berkeley Springs, a Cadillac. When the business began to expand as the automobile grew in popularity, he built and managed a garage in what is now the Berkeley Theatre. After several years he leased the building to other parties and later converted it to a theatre. He was a son of the late John Will Johnson and Eliza Bechtol. Johnson, and three grandchildren survive. Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. Frank R. Isaac, of Baltimore, a former pastor and Rev. Robert H.
