Johnson, Berkeley Springs; a niece; and three nephews. Services were held Monday, October 5, 2 p.m. at the Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs, with the Rev. Thomas Jackson officiating. Mrs. Johnson was born in Minneapolis, Minn., August 4, 1906, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adelbert Roland Taylor, and received her early education there. Later she was graduated from West Virginia University and then moved to Berkeley Springs where she taught English and Journalism at the high school. She married J. William Johnson of Berkeley Springs and the coupled lived her until moving to Florida several years ago. While in Berkeley Springs they resided in what was known as the "Johnson House" on North Washington Street. This structure is currently occupied by the Town of Bath. In addition to her husband she is survived by one daughter, Mrs. John C. (Rolly) Hawkins of Manhasset, Long Island, N.Y; three granddaughters, Kathy King, Mary Louise and Missy Hawkins. An elder daughter, Barbara, preceded her mother in death. Friends were received by the family at the Hunter Funeral Home Tuesday evening. Services are scheduled for today, Wednesday, 2:00 p.m., from St. Mark's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Jack Bird officiating. Interment will be in Greenway Cemetery.5 |

Obit | John William's obituary was published in the Morgan Messenger on 28 September 1977: J. William Johnson, formerly of Berkeley Springs, died Friday, September 23 in Manhasset, N.Y. A member of one of Morgan County's oldest families, he was born in Berkeley Springs January 25, 1909, a son of Ernest L. and Jeanette Slayman Johnson. Several generations of the Johnson family occupied the ancestral home on North Washington Street built by Johnson's grandfather, John William Johnson, and occupied last by Mrs. Ernest Johnson. It was purchased from the Johnson family by the Town of Bath and has become the town's municipal building. He was graduated from Berkeley Springs High School and owned and operated Berkeley Springs' only theatre. He was assistant cashier at Citizens National Bank and a member of the Berkeley Springs Young Men's Business Club which produced the Tomato Festival. He was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church and served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. His wife, the former Kathryn Taylor, of Minneapolis, Minn., preceded him in death. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. John C. Hawkins, of Manhasset, and three granddaughters. A daughter, Mrs. Barbara Taylor Kipe, preceded him in death, as did his only brother, Atty. Lewis E. Johnson, of Fairmont. Funeral services were conducted Monday, September 26, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Berkeley Springs by Rev. Jack O. Bird, with burial in Greenway Cemetery. Arrangements were made by the Hunter Funeral Home. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the St. Mark's Episcopal Church Altar Guild in Berkeley Springs.6 |

Born Oct. 30, 1895, in Morgan County, she was the daughter of the late Morgan S. and Martha P. (Thompson) Harmison. She was a graduate of Fairmont State College. She was a former Morgan County school teacher, where she assisted with the Morgan County Mental Health Program. She was a former owner of the Johnson Insurance Agency; and a member of the Berkeley Springs Women's Club, which she assisted in establishing. She was a member of the St. Mark's Episcopal Church, where she had been very active. Surviving are two sons, Philip E. Johnson of Laurel, Miss., and John David Johnson of Berkeley Springs; five grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon E. Johnson, in 1944; six sisters; one son, Rich M. Johnson; and three brothers. Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Smith, assisted by Rev. Hennis Fox officiating. Interment will be in Greenway Cemetery. Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from7 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to services on Sunday.8 |

He had been flown to Morgantown for hospitalization on May 12 and had returned home on May 20. Mr. Johnson was affiliated with Morgan County War Memorial Hospital since it began in 1947. He was the hospital's first administrator (1947-1953) and was president of the board of directors from 1963 until 1984. He was retired director of personnel/employee benefits of Pennsylvania Glass Sand Corporation. He was active in the Republican Party on both local and state levels, and was former county chairman. He was a member of the Morgan County Historical Society, board member of the Museum of Berkeley Springs, member of the Chamber of Commerce, member of the Board of Visitors of West Virginia University School of Business and Economics, and a member of the WVU Alumni Association. He was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church. He was a member of the V.F.W., and American Legion Post #60, and a past post commander. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.s. Navy as an aviator, retiring from active duty as lieutenant commander. Born January 22, 1919 in Morgan County, he was the son of Ethel M. Harmison Johnson of Berkeley Springs, and the late Vernon E. Johnson. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Ann Chambers Johnson, at home; a daughter, Jo Mullendore, Boonsboro, Md; two sons, Cmdr. J. Michael Johnson, Jacksonville, Fla., and D. Christopher Johnson, Las Vegas, Nev; a half-sister, Virginia Gorrell, Berkeley Springs; two brothers, Philip E. Johnson, Laurel, Miss., and J. David Johnson, Berkeley Springs; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Lt. Richard M. Johnson, jr. who was killed in Korea on the DMZ in 1968. Memorial services were held Saturday at St. Mark's Episcopal Church with Bishop Richard J. Wood officiating. Burial was in Greenway Cemetery with full military rites. Arrangements were by Hunter Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Morgan County Rescue Squad.4 |

Later she was graduated from West Virginia University and then moved to Berkeley Springs where she taught English and Journalism at the high school. She married J. William Johnson of Berkeley Springs and the coupled lived her until moving to Florida several years ago. While in Berkeley Springs they resided in what was known as the "Johnson House" on North Washington Street. This structure is currently occupied by the Town of Bath. In addition to her husband she is survived by one daughter, Mrs. John C. (Rolly) Hawkins of Manhasset, Long Island, N.Y; three granddaughters, Kathy King, Mary Louise and Missy Hawkins. An elder daughter, Barbara, preceded her mother in death. Friends were received by the family at the Hunter Funeral Home Tuesday evening. Services are scheduled for today, Wednesday, 2:00 p.m., from St. Mark's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Jack Bird officiating. Interment will be in Greenway Cemetery.4 |

Leads Unit Near Demilitarized Zone Last Thursday afternoon the community was shocked to learn that Mr. and Mrs. Richard M. Johnson, Sr., Berkeley Springs, had been informed that their eldest son First Lieutenant Richard M. Johnson, Jr., 23, was killed in Korea on July 10. "Rick," as the First Lieutenant was known here, was reported to have been leading an infantry unit near the Demilitarized Zone at about dusk when he was killed in a fire fight by friendly forces. He was due to return to the United States June 20 after serving 13 months in Korea and was scheduled for discharge in March 1969. A 1966 graduate of West Virginia University, with an AB Degree in history, he received an Army Reserve Commission and volunteered for infantry service overseas the day of his graduation. While a student at the university he received recognition as a Distinguished Military Student in Advanced ROTC, was a member of Scabbard and Blade, Military Honorary, and received an honor commendation in summer camp at Indiantown Gap, Pa. With the 8th Infantry Battalion. He was also on the WVU wrestling squad, a member of Phi Sigma Kappa social fraternity, chaplain of Inter-Fraternity Council, manager of the Roundtable Clothing Store in Morgantown and a member of the Downtown Action Council there. He was born in Elkins January 17, 1945, was a member of the Episcopal Church here where he served as an acolyte and graduated from Berkeley Springs High in 1962. He starred in football and wrestling and received All State Honorable Mention in football in his senior year. He was also voted "Best All Around" by his class. He married the former Laural Jane Howery Beckley, June 3, 1967 and left for Korea June 27 that same year where he was in command of all 2nd Division Quick Reaction Forces along the DMZ from October until his death. He received three commendations for service above and beyond the call of duty during his Korean assignment. Survivors, in addition to his wife and parents are one sister, Miss Jo C. Johnson, a senior at WVU, and two brothers, John Michael, a recent graduate of the College of William and Mary who will enter military service in the fall and David Christopher who was graduated from Berkeley Springs High School this year. The body will arrive at the Hunter Funeral Home this evening (Thursday) and remain there until time for services at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at St. mark's Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. Thomas Kuhn. The family will receive friends at the funeral home after 7:00 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Greenway Cemetery. The family requests that memorial contributions be sent to the War Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Memorial Fund, or the St. Mark's Episcopal Church Altar Guild Fund.1 |
