Death*He died on 2 February 1885 at Morgan, West Virginia, at age 72; buried at the Johnson Cemetery.1
(Witness) BioIn the early part of the 19th Century, several of the Johnson brothers came from Pennsylvania, purchased several hundred acres of land, and settled in what is now Morgan Co., West. Va. To this day the area is called Johnson Mill. The Johnsons were farmers and lumbermen. This prevailed for five generations. This family was instrumental in building one of the first saw mills on Sleepy Creek with a Undershot Water Wheel. It was located in the falls at Johnson Pond.
In 1812 a son, William, was born to John and Elizabeth Johnson. In 1854 William married Catherine Cooper. To this union in 1858 a son George William was born, and in 1860 a daughter Mary Elizabeth. Mary Elizabeth became the wife of Lafayette Fearnow. George William Johnson stayed on the family farm and in 1884 married Sarah Lutman. From this marriage three children lived to adulthood, namely, James H., Maggie C., and Carl S. Sarah died shortly after Carl was born and his Grandmother, Catherine raised him. She lived to be over 90 years old, and died in 1914. George William died in 1939 and was the last person to be buried in the Johnson Cemetery.
Carl S. and I (Eleanor Weber) were married in 1917. We moved in to the Johnson farm and made a home for George William Johnson for the rest of his life. Since he was born when the Civil War clouds were gathering, he had some personal experiences and also from the previous generation to relate.
The house that George William was born in was located at Johnson Mill where the present road makes a sharp turn to make the approach to the low water bridge across Sleepy Creek. The house contained a chest of drawers and a pie safe, both of which had locks. George was two years old, an age where he insisted on exploring. He would pull out the bottom drawer and crawl in. His Mother feared for his safety, so she locked all the chest drawers and the safe. It was during this time (1860) that a flash flood came down Sleepy Creek, the house washed away with all contents. The house stayed intact until it went through the falls at Johnson Pond and then disintegrated. After the water receded, the safe and chest of drawers were found about a mile down the creek still intact. They are still being used by the Johnson family. Another story related by George was that in order to keep the horses from being stolen by the Civil War Soldiers traveling north, his father would take the horses to an isolated area along Highland Ridge, tie them to a tree and sleep with them at night. My two grandchildren love to hear the stories of their early ancestors.8
