Obit | Charles Kerchief's obituary was published in the Rochester Sentinel on 11 November 1936: Charles K. KEPLER passed on to the higher life from Woodlawn hospital, at 5 o’clock this morning, where he had been a patient for the past two weeks. Death followed an operation for stomach trouble, which affliction he suffered for a long time. Charles Kerchief KEPLER was born at Pleasant Hill, Fulton county, Dec. 12, 1869. He was the son of Martin V. KEPLER and Martha J. (HOOVER) KEPLER. On January 4, 1899, he was united in marriage with Hannah Belle YODER, who has remained his faithful companion until his demise. In his early manhood Mr. Kepler devoted his time to farming until 1893, when he became postmaster at Lucetta, this county. * * * * Photo * * * * In 1904 he became owner of the general merchandise store at Green Oak, and in 1907 joined with Charles ROBBINS and Guy MONTGOMERY in the R. K. M. garage, located where the Char-Bell theatre now stands. In 1923 the C. K. Kepler Auto Company was formed which occupies the entire floor of the building at 615 Main St. The deceased was the second oldest Chevrolet dealer in the United States, receiving his first franchise in 1916, and therefore has left a record of automobile salesmanship worthy of mention. Mr. Kepler was a member of the Methodist church at Green Oak and belonged to the Odd Fellows lodge for 30 years, making the precepts of that esteemed order the rule of his life. As a member of the Kiwanis Club he was always found having a progressive mind with any plan that would mean the betterment of his home city or the advancement of his fellow man. In the 20 years he was a business man he was recognized as a quiet, yet forceful gentleman, liked by his associates, neighbors and friends, at all times playing the game of life fair and unafraid. Surviving are the widow; two brothers, James [KEPLER] and John [KEPLER], of Rochester; and one sister, Mrs. Rebeccah WOLFORD of Logansport. The funeral services will take place at Grace Methodist church, Friday at 2:00 p.m., Rev. STOVALL officiating. Burial at Odd Fellows cemetery. Tuesday, November 17, 1936 Among those from out of town who attended the funeral, Friday afternoon, of C. K. (Witness) Obit | He witnessed the Obit of Hannah Belle Yoder on 22 December 1947 at Rochester Sentinel, Rochester, Fulton, Indiana, Mrs. Hannah Belle KEPLER, well known Rochester resident, died from a heart attack 7:30 Sunday evening while enroute to Woodlawn in an ambulance. Mrs. Kepler first became ill while on her way from her home 911 Madison street to the downtown district and stopped into the New York Candy Kitchen from where the ambulance was summoned when it became apparent she was critically ill. Mrs. Orlan KEPLER, who was summoned to the New York Candy Kitchen was with her aunt at the time she passed away. Previous to this fatal attack she had been enjoying exceptionally good health. Mrs. Kepler was widely known throughout Fulton county and for many years she was associated with her husband, the late Charles KEPLER, in the Chevrolet agency in this city. This business was located 617 Main street in the buildings now occupied by the Indiana Gas & Water Co. Hannah Belle [YODER], daugher of Benjamin and Sarah (DEWALD) YODER, was born Jan. 9, 1877 in the Pleasant Hill community, Miami county, Ind. On Jan. 4, 1899 she was married to Charles K. KEPLER who preceded her in death Nov. 11, 1936. The Keplers moved to Rochester from the Green Oak community in 1917. She was a member of the Green Oak Methodist church, the Rochester Rebekah lodge and the Green Oak club. Survivors are two brothers, George YODER, of Burlington, Iowa; Benjamin YODER, of Peru; a nephew Orland KEPLER, of this ciy; two nieces, Mrs. Rose PLUNKETT, of Indianapolis; Mrs. Richard CLOUD, of South Bend and several other nieces and nephews residing out-of-town. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon 2 p.m., at the Rochester Methodist church with the Rev. Frank R. BRIGGS officiating. Burial will be in the IOOF cemetery here. The body lies in state at the Zimmerman Brothers funeral home where friends may call.8 |

Obit | James F.'s obituary was published in the Rochester Sentinel on 28 November 1939: James F. KEPLER, aged 68, pioneer automobile dealer of this city, died at 2:30 o’clock Tuesday morning in the Woodlawn hospital from heart trouble and other complications. He had been in ill health for one year and bedfast four weeks. He was taken to the hospital from his home, 1024 South Madison street, last Sunday. The deceased was born in the Pleasant Hill community in Miami county, March 6, 1872. His parents were Martin V. and Martha J. (HOOVER) KEPLER. In a ceremony which was performed in this city, May 6, 1896, he was married to Julia Ann YODER who preceded her husband in death. Mr. Kepler was a member of the Presbyterian church at Deedsville. Mr. Kepler had been a resident of Rochester for 40 years moving here from his birthplace where he had lived on a farm. While in Rochester Mr. Kepler engaged in various business enterprises among them was a grocery and meat market in East Ninth street, and a realty agency. Mr. Kepler was one of the first to see the possibilities of Lake Manitou as a summer resort and with his father the late Martin Kepler plotted what is now the Lily Park and Poet’s Point additions on the north shore of the lake. Mr. Kepler operated the first motor bus to Lake Manitou in 1907 which was a Winton chain driven vehicle. This Winton was popularly known as a “rubberneck wagon” as it was about eight feet high and had no top. Mr. Kepler first entered the automobile business with his brother, the late Charles KEPLER, who succumbed in 1936 and who had the Chevrolet agency in Rochester. Mr. Kepler was widely known by farmers in Fulton and surrounding counties. For the past five years he has been associated with his son Orlen Kepler in his auto agency in Rochester. Survivors are the son Orlen KEPLER; two daughters, Mrs. Edna PLUNKETT, Indianapolis, and Mrs. Vera CLOUD of Rochester; brother John KEPLER, Kokomo; sister, Mrs. Rebecca WOLFORD, Logansport and three grandsons, James PLUNKETT, Indianapolis, John [KEPLER] and Kenneth KEPLER of Rochester. The funeral services will be held from the Kepler residence, 1024 Madison street, at 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon with Rev. D. S. PERRY officiating. Burial will be made in the Rochester Odd Fellows cemetery. Friends may pay their respects at the Kepler residence after noon Wednesday until the hour of the last rites.2 |
