BURKETT, 35, R.R. 1, Akron, was killed Wednesday morning when a tractor he was driving overturned on top of him. The accident occurred about 10:45 o’clock on Burkett’s farm on County Road 150 South, four-tenths of a mile east of County Road 700 East. Fulton County Coroner Junior D. GOOD said death was instant, due to a crushed chest. County police said Burkett was living in Kokomo but had returned to the farm Wednesday morning with a friend, Robert J. FREIDLINE of Kokomo, to do some work. Freidline, who called police after the accident, said Burkett was driving the tractor up his lane to the barn when he attempted to make a left turn and the tractor rolled over, pinning Burkett beneath it. The tractor was equipped with a front-end loader at the time of the accident. Mr. Burkett was born April 23, 1941, in Fulton county to Norman and Helen MILLER BURKETT and had lived in the Akron area all his life. He married Bonnie CONRAD at Richland Center in 1961; she survives. He was a farmer and also employed at Chrysler corporation, Kokomo. He was a member of the Converse Church of Christ, the Swayzee Masonic lodge and the Independent Order of Forresters. Surviving with Mrs. Burkett are two daughters, Brenda Jo and Beth Ann [BURKETT], both at home; the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Norman BURKETT, Webster, Wis; a sister, Mrs. Jim (Marsha) ROBBINS, Elmyra, N.Y; three brothers, David [BURKETT], Talma; Tom [BURKETT], Webster, Wis., and Richard [BURKETT], Fort Wayne. Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Athens United Methodist church with the Rev. Wayne JOHNSON and the Rev. J. D. THOMASON officiating. Burial will be at the Mt. Hope cemetery, Athens. Friends may call at the Sheetz funeral home, Akron, from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday and the church for one hour prior to services.1 |

She was a member of Cross-Wind United Methodist Church, Rochester Eastern Star, Fulton County Retired Teacher’s Association, Indiaa State Teacher’s Associatio and Delta Kappa Gamma sorority. She retired as a teacher in 1980 from the Rochester Communty School Corporation. Prior to that, she had taught at schools in Carroll County, Jonesboro, Crown Point, Lutheran Mountain Mission in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia, Bible School at Rocky Boy Indian Reservation in Montana, and at various church camps in Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina and Indiana. She taught school for 39 1/2 years. She is survived by one son Gerry and his wife Jackie BURKETT, Rochester; one daughter Karen and husband Loren HYLTON, Logansport; seven grandchildren Roscoe, Regan, Renee, Ryan and Rylee BURKETT, and Evan and Lindy HYLTON. She is also survived by two sisters, Margaret Ruth BRYANT and Phyllis McVAY, both of Logansport, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Howard HUSTON, and two sisters, Donnabelle HUSTON and Mary Alice NALE. Services were at 11 a.m. today at the Athens United Methodist Church with the Rev. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Dwight (Deborah) HAMMOND, Gilead; two sons, Dale D. and wife Judith COFFING and W. Chris and wife Denise COFFING, both of Macy; six grandchildren and one great-grandson. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Ruth BURKE, Monticello, several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents and a sister, Anna Mae COFFING. Services are at 11 a.m. Monday at the Foster & Good Funeral Home, Rochester, with the Rev. David WELSH officiating. Obit | Minnie Ann's obituary was published in the Criterion on 13 March 1969: Mrs. Minnie Howard of Olathe died Saturday, March 8, in the Valley Manor Nursing Home at Montrose. She had been a resident of the Olathe Community for 55 years. Minnie Ann Owens was born April 25, 1890 at Hoxie, Kansas, to Joseph and Teresa Owens, and spent her early life in Nebraska. She came to Colorado about 1914. Mrs. Howard was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, the Church Guild and had retained her membership in Bema Rebekah Lodge at Nemaha, Nebraska. She is survived by a son, Howard Hoover, of Olathe, and a daughter, Mary Ann Taylor, of Grand Junction; one son, Capt. Wayne Hoover, was killed in action in 1943 during World War II. Her husband, Thomas Howard, is deceased. There are four grandchildren, Mrs. Donald Williams, Castle Rock, Colorado; Mrs. Kenneth Stancato, Lake Oswego, Oregon, Mrs. Dan Martin, New Providence, New Jersey; and Wayne Hoover, Bakersfield, California; seven great grandchildren; two brothers and one sister, Russell Owens, and Mrs. Carrie Johnson, Olathe, and Homer B. Owens, Richmond, California. Services for Mrs. Howard were conducted by Father J. Scott Wilson at 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 10, from Grace Episcopal Church at Olathe. Interment was made in the Olathe Cemetery, Lawrence N. Veirs, director.2 |
