Born Feb. 15, 1890 in Athens, he was the son of Thomas and Annie JOHNSON BURKETT. He was married in Chicago in 1908 to Orpha ROWE, who died in 1964. His second marriage was to Velda PENROD, who survives. He was a farmer and a member of Akron Masonic Lodge 659, Akron Order of Eastern Star 410, Athens United Methodist church and the Fulton County Farm Bureau. Surviving with the wife are two daughters, Mrs. Lloyd (Jean) WALTERS, R.R. 1, Akron, and Mrs. Jack (Ferol) HAMMOND, North Manchester; three sons, Raymond [BURKETT], of Spooner, Wis; Norman [BURKETT], of R.R. 1, Akron, and Orville [BURKETT], of Rochester; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; a step-daughter, Mrs. Lee (Glee) EBERLY, South Whitley; a step-son, Joseph GAMBY, Liberty, Ind., and seven stepgrandchildren. Preceding in death were a daughter, a sister, two brothers and a half-brother. Last rites will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Athens United Methodist church with the Rev. Wayne JOHNSON officiating. Burial will be in the Mount Hope cemetery at Athens. Friends may call at the Sheetz funeral home in Akron after 2 p.m. Sunday until noon Monday and at the church for one hour before services.10 |

Obit | Howard H.'s obituary was published in the Rochester Sentinel on 21 December 1970: Dr. Howard H. ROWE, 62, 417 West Ninth street, died Saturday at 11:50 p.m. in South Bend Memorial hospital, where he had been admitted at 5:45 a.m. that day, after suffering a heart attack at his home. Dr. Rowe’s death was entirely unexpected; he had attended the Rochester high school basketball game, as was his usual custom, Friday night at Warsaw. Last rites will be Wednesday at 11:15 a.m. in the St. Joseph’s Catholic church with Father George LANNING officiating. Burial will be in the Athens cemetery. Friends may call at the Foster & Good funeral home after 2 p.m. Tuesday. The Rosary will be recited at the funeral home Tuesday at 7 p.m. by Father Harold WELLER. Dr. Rowe, who had been in the general practice of medicine in Rochester since 1944, is the second local physician to die suddenly of a heart attack this year. Dr. E. V. HERENDEEN was stricken fatally Aug. 3. The past four months Dr. Rowe had been in charge of the campaign to raise funds to equip the coronary and intensive care unit at Woodlawn hospital in Dr. Herendeen’s memory. The drive went over its $25,000 goal. He had been active in civic affairs despite his medical practice, having served as county coroner from 1956-64 and as school board member during the time new elementary schools were planned and built here in the 1950s. A graduate of Rochester high school, he received his M.D. degree from the Indiana university school of Medicine and was a member of the Indiana State Medical Association, Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, and the Fulton County Medical Society. A former chief of staff of Woodlawn hospital, he also was 1970 fund drive chairman of the I.U. medical school. Dr. Rowe was a member of St. Joseph’s church, Moose, Eagles and Elks lodges; Fraternal Order of Police and National Rifle association. He was born Nov. 12, 1908, at Athens, the son of Frederick and Grace HEETER ROWE, and had spent most of his life in this community. His marriage was Aug. 21, 1941, at Indianapolis, to Margaret LEE, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Karl (Lee Ann) NEWCOMB, St. Mary’s-of-the-Woods, Ind., and Miss Dina G. ROWE, a senior at Indiana State university; one son, Patrik H. [ROWE], post-graduate student at Indiana State; two grandchildren, Howard and Jean NEWCOMB; three sisters, Mrs. Al (Eva) MATHIESON and Mrs. Ed (Dora) SHEWMAN, both of Akron; and Mrs. Joseph (Josephine) McCONNELL, Cedar Lake; his step-mother, Mrs. Fred ROWE, and a stepbrother, Cecil PATTERSON, both of Rochestr. The family requests that memorials other than flowers be made to the Dr. E. V. Herendeen memorial coronary and intensive care unit. Howard H. ROWE, 62, who died Saturday night at South Bend Memorial hospital after a brief illness. Official cause of Dr. Rowe’s death was announced today by the attending physician in South Bend as an aneurysm of the aorta. Dr. Rowe had practiced medicine here 26 years. Father George LANNING will officiate at rites and burial will be in the Athens cemetery. He was born Nov, 18, 1924 near Akron to Roscoe and Orpha ROWE BURKETT, who preceded in death. Except for nine years at Lake Manitou, he lived most of his life in the Akron area. He was married on Dec. 26, 1956 at Deer Creek to Helen Louise HOUSTON, who survives. A retired farmer and graduate of Akron High School, he was a member of the Macy United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge 79, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Order of Eastern Star, the Scottish Rite, the Fort Wayne Mizpah Shrine Temple, and had belonged to the Akron Jonah Club. Surviving with the wife are a daughter, Mrs. Loren (Karen) HYLTON, Logansport; a son, Gerry S. BURKETT, Rt. 3, Rochester; five grandchildren, Lindy and Evan HYLTON of Logansport; Roscoe, Regan and Renee BURKETT, Rochester; two sisters, Mrs. Jack (Ferol) HAMMOND, North Manchester, and Mrs. Jean WALTERS, Fulton, and two brothers, Raymond BURKETT, Spooner, Wis., and Norman BURKETT, Tippecanoe. A sister preceded in death. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Foster ad Good Funeral Home, Rochester. Burial will be in the Athens Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. Saturday, and on Sunday from 98 a.m. until services. Eastern Star services will be at 7 p.m. Saturday, followed by Masonic Services at 7:30 p.m.2 |

He was a former Sunday School teacher and member of the Athens United Methodist Church, member and past president of the Famous Akron Jonah Club, and former member of the board of directors of the Fulton County REMC. Surviving with the wife are two daughters, Mrs. Tad (Patricia) HENDERSON, Spencerville, and Mrs. Larry (Juanita) KUHN, Leo; a son, Robert [BURKETT], Benton Harbor, Mich; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Jack (Ferol) HAMMOND, North Manchester, and Mrs. Bud (Jean) GATES, Fulton, and a brother, Norman [BURKETT], Tippecanoe. He was preceded in death by a brother, Orville [BURKETT], and a sister. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Foster & Good Funeral Home, Rochester, with the Rev. Wayne JOHNSON officiating. Burial will be in the Athens Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, and Thursday from 9 a.m. until services.2 |

On Oct. 9, 1928 at Valparaiso he married Helen M. MILLER, who survives. He was a retired farmer and school bus driver for Tippecanoe Valley Schools. He and his wife had owned and operated a grocery store near Spooner, Wis. He was a former Henry Township trustee, a past master and member of the former Akron Masonic Lodge, and was a member of the Rochester Masonic Lodge. He also was a past worthy patron of the Akron Eastern Star. Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Mrs. Jim (Marcia G.) ROBBINS, Palmyra, N.Y; three sons, Richard A. [BURKETT], Indianapolis; David L. [BURKETT], Talma, and Tommy J. [BURKETT], Burlington, Wis; thirteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Jack (Ferol) HAMMOND, North Manchester, and Jean WALTERS, Logansport, and nieces and nephews. Preceding in death were a son, Billy Joe [BURKETT], in 1977; an infant sister, Grace [BURKETT], and two brothers, Raymond and Orville [BURKETT]. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Foster & Good Funeral Home, Rochester, with the Rev. Rod RUBERG officiating. Burial will be in the Athens Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Monday and after 9 a.m. Tuesday. Masonic services will be at 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.2 |
