Obit | Eliza Jane's obituary was published in the Troy Newspaper on 12 October 1934: AGED TROY WOMAN IS SERIOUSLY BURNED Mrs. Eliza Wright, 83, appearing as a burning torch, was rescued from possible death at 11 o'clock Friday morning on the lawn of her home, 228 Oak Street, where she resides alone. Much of the surface of her body was burned and her condition is serious, according to a report this afternoon from the Stouder hospital where she was taken following the accident. The aged woman had started a bonfire and it is presumed she walked too close to the fire, permitting the wind to whip her dress with the flames. When she was discovered by Mrs. Clara Waler, a neighbor, her clothing was in flames. The alarm was sounded by Mrs. Waler and with the assistance of other neighbors the clothing was torn from Mrs. Wright's body and she was carried into her home, but not before she was seriously burned. Dr. Berton M. Hogie, the attending physician, had Mrs. Wright removed to the local hospital where medical attention is being administered. Then, this was in the Troy paper the next day (10/13/1934): BURNS PROVE FATAL TO AGED TROY WOMAN Mrs. Eliza Caw Wright, 83, died at 2:30 o'clock Saturday morning at Stouder Memorial Hospital of burns received Friday morning when she walked too near a bonfire, catching her dress on fire, at her home, 228 Oak Street. Mrs. Wright was born in Frederick, but had lived in Troy for more than 50 years. She was formerly a member of the Brethren Church, and at the time of her death was a member of the Nazarene faith. Surviving are three sons, Weller, Grevy and Saussier Wright, all of Troy, and a daughter, Mrs. Adele Davis, of Granville; 22 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Irvin funeral home, with Rev. J.I. Moore of the Church of the Nazarene in charge. Burial will be made in Riverside Cemetery. |
