He retired in 1980 as an inspector with Bethlehem Steel in Sparrows Point, Md. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the AARP. He was a member of Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post #60, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #1483, and Risinger-Stotler VFW #4019, all of Berkeley Springs. Surviving are two daughters, Sandra Lee Pelekakis and Barbara Ellen Starkey, both of Baltimore, Md; two sisters, Helen F. Montgomery, Berkeley Springs, and Gladys V. Douglas, Falling Waters; five brothers, Virgil D. Cain, Stanley L. Cain, Glenn R. Cain, and L. Cletus Cain, all of Berkeley Springs, and Ercel V. Cain, Martinsburg; eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Freda Adeline Hovermale Cain on June 4, 1980; one sister, Zella Ruth Cain; and two brothers, Hammond L. Cain and Lawrence E. Cain. Services were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, with Pastor Wayne Frum officiating. He entered the Army November 7, 1942 and received his training at Fort Thomas, Ky., and Fort Bragg, N.C. He left for overseas service in March 1943 and was wounded July 25, 1943 in North Africa. He was wounded a second time, July 28, 1943 in France and spent until October 6 in a hospital in England. Besides his parents the following brothers and sisters survive: T/4 Raymond F. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. from November 18, 1942 until being honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant on March 11, 1946 at Fort Meade, MD. He was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon. He was a member of Risinger-Stotler VFW Post #4019, Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post #60, Morgan County Chapter #34, DAV, and Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1483, all in Berkeley Springs. He served for many years as a loyal and faithful member of the Tri-State Honor Guard. Surviving are one sister, Jessie Elizabeth Harden, Berkeley Springs; three nieces; three great-nieces and two great-nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Catherine Minnie Maiden and one brother, Robert Paul Harden. Funeral services with military honors provided by the Tri-State Honor Guard were conducted at 2 PM on Sunday, August 31, at the Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, with the Rev. Rodney C. Truax officiating. Private burial was in Spohrs Crossroads Cemetery, Berkeley Springs.4 |
