Michael, both of Berkeley Springs; Lewis B. Michael, Martinsburg; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Services were conducted at the Helsley Funeral Home Tuesday, June 12 by Hennis Fox, with interment in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Spohr's Cross Roads.⁷

Born in Morgan County, October 8, 1887, he was a son of Isaac and Amanda Elizabeth Oliver Cain. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Nora V. Crouse Cain; one sister, Mrs. Bertha S. Michael, Berkeley Springs, and three nephews. Services were conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Hunter Funeral Home by Hennis Fox. Burial was in the Mt. Zion Cemetery at Spohrs Cross Roads.⁶

A.M. here. He is survived by his wife, the former Miss Bertha S. Cain, Berkeley Springs; and three sons--Louis B., Martinsburg; William S. and Henry O., Berkeley Springs; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. The body remained at the Hunter Funeral Home where services were conducted Saturday at 2 by the Rev. H. Middleton Raynal. Burial was in Spohrs Cross Roads Cemetery. Members of the local Jr. O.U.A.M. acted as pallbearers and conducted graveside services.⁵

Henry O. Michael, prominent Morgan County farmer, was killed in a tractor accident at his farm near Berkeley Springs Friday evening. Born in Morgan County April 28, 1905, he was the son of Charles Daniel and Bertha Cain Michael. Active in the affairs of the Republican Party, he was the former county commissioner, served as director of the Peoples Insurance Company, and was an active member of Bethel UM Church where he filled various official positions.
He is survived by his wife, the former Virginia Everett; one son, Charles R. Michael, Berkeley Springs; two daughters, Mrs. Marie Fisher, Berkeley Springs, and Mrs. Louise Mellott, of Big Pool, Md; four grandchildren; two brothers, William A. Michael, Berkeley Springs; and Lewis B. Michael, of Martinsburg. The body is at the Johnson Funeral Home in Berkeley Springs. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at the Bethel UM Church, U.S. Rt. 522, South, by the Rev. Earl Day, assisted by the Rev. John Rosenberry, with burial in Greenway Cemetery.⁷

Born March 14, 1898 in Morgan County, she was the daughter of the late Albert W. and Mamie Michael Hovermale. She was a member of the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was a former member and officer of the Morgan County Farm Bureau and a member of the Camp Meeting Association. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Leslie Cain in 1963.
Surviving are two daughters, Iva Lea Lantz, Stephen City, Va. And Virginia Somers, Berkeley Springs; two sisters, Genevieve Hofe and Lillian Somers, both of Berkeley Springs; a brother, Floyd Hovermale, Berkeley Springs; 15 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren and 12 great great grandchildren. Services will be held tomorrow, Thursday, February 23, 2:00 p.m., at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with the Rev. Henry Fisher and the Rev. Hennis Fox officiating with burial in the church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the service. Friends will be received at the Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, today, Wednesday, 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00.⁶

Virginia Delores Somers, 83, of Berkeley Springs, WV died on Saturday, October 23, 1999 at Heartland, Martinsburg, WV. Born October 28, 1915 in Morgan County, the daughter of the late James Leslie and Mary Virginia Widmyer Cain. She was a homemaker and a lifelong farmer in Morgan County. She worked at Diamond Ridge Canning Factory, which her dad owned.
Surviving are nine sons, Shearl "Joe" Somers of Winchester, VA, Randy Somers of Gerrardstown, and Bob Somers, Gary Somers, James L. Somers, Dale Somers, Dennis Somers, Louis Somers and David Somers, all of Berkeley Springs; two daughters, Phyllis Fox of Hedgesville and Carol Emerson of Berkeley Springs; one half sister, Iva Lee Hantz of Edinburgh, VA; 25 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Wilfred Clyde Somers in 1957; one sister, Martha Cain; one brother, Virgil Cain and two infant half brothers. Funeral services were conducted on Monday October 25 at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with the Rev. Henry Fisher and Rev. Wayne Frum officiating. Interment was in Spohrs Crossroads Cemetery.⁵

Cain Merchant, died last May. Surviving are two sons-Willie, Berkeley Springs; Roscoe, Baltimore, Md; five daughters-Mrs. George Custer, Mrs. Foster Michael, Martinsburg; Mrs. Frank McDonald, Mrs. Carl Rankin, Baltimore; Mrs. Harry McCumbee, Berkeley Springs; and 15 grandchildren. The body was removed to the Hunter Funeral Home. Services were held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Mt. Olivet Church with his pastor, the Rev. C.G. Russell, and the Rev. E.C. Day a former pastor, now of Staunton, Va., officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.²

Willie Sylvester "Bill" Merchant, 88, of Berkeley Springs died Tuesday, April 4, 2000 at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital. Born in Morgan County on May 24, 1911, he was the son of the late W.D. and Bessie Cain Merchant. As a young man he worked in the tomato canneries and with his father on the sawmill. He and his wife Chlorus operated Merchant's Gulf Service from 1968-1979. He was proprietor of M&M Salvage Yard from 1958-1990. He was also a Chevrolet car collector.
Survivors include daughter, Helen J. Soper of Berkeley Springs; one son, Raymond "Buddy" Merchant of Berkeley Springs; five sisters, Geneva Custer of Martinsburg, Mary Hurley of Ocala, FL, Louise Benavides of Branson, MO, Pauline Asbury and Anna Marie McCumbee, both of Berkeley Springs and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Cain Merchant in 1947; his second wife, Chlorus Yost Merchant in 1996 and one brother, Roscoe Merchant. Funeral services were conducted Friday April 7. Burial was in the Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church Cemetery.⁴

He was retired from Commercial Shearing, owned and operated a saw mill until his illness in June 2001. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Shellback title. He was a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart #579 and the Junior Order of United American Mechanics Lodge #117. He is survived by his wife Frances Janet VanGosen Cain of Berkeley Springs who he married July 18, 1946; two daughters, Cindy Hovermale and Janet Jones, both of Berkeley Springs; three sons, Larry Cain of Dallas, TX, Dennis Cain and Donald Cain, both of Berkeley Springs; one sister, Gladys Douglas of Falling Waters, WV; four brothers, Stanley Cain, Cledus Cain and Glen Cain, all of Berkeley Springs and Ercil Cain of Martinsburg; 12 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Helen K. Souders; two sisters, Helen Montgomery and Zella Cain; two brothers, Lawrence Cain and Raymond Cain and one granddaughter, Amy Deann Hovermale. Services were held Saturday, November 24, 2001 at 11 a.m. at Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, 106 S. Mercer St., Berkeley Springs with Pastor Ed James officiating. A Purple Heart ceremony service was held Friday, November 23 at 7 p.m. and a Junior Order service was held Friday, November 23 at 8 p.m. Both services were at the Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home. Burial was in Alpine United Methodist Church Cemetery.⁵
