Michael, Berkeley Springs; and Lewis B. Michael, of Martinsburg. The body is at the Johnson Funeral Home in Berkeley Springs. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at the Bethel UM Church, U.S. Rt. 522, South, by the Rev. Earl Day, assisted by the Rev. John Rosenberry, with burial in Greenway Cemetery.7 |

Somers, Dale Somers, Dennis Somers, Louis Somers and David Somers, all of Berkeley Springs; two daughters, Phyllis Fox of Hedgesville and Carol Emerson of Berkeley Springs; one half sister, Iva Lee Hantz of Edinburgh, VA; 25 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Wilfred Clyde Somers in 1957; one sister, Martha Cain; one brother, Virgil Cain and two infant half brothers. Funeral services were conducted on Monday October 25 at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with the Rev. Henry Fisher and Rev. Wayne Frum officiating. Interment was in Spohrs Crossroads Cemetery.5 |

The body was removed to the Hunter Funeral Home. Services were held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Mt. Olivet Church with his pastor, the Rev. C.G. Russell, and the Rev. E.C. Day a former pastor, now of Staunton, Va., officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.2 |

Born in Morgan County on May 24, 1911, he was the son of the late W.D. and Bessie Cain Merchant. As a young man he worked in the tomato canneries and with his father on the sawmill. He and his wife Chlorus operated Merchant's Gulf Service from 1968-1979. He was proprietor of M&M Salvage Yard from 1958-1990. He was also a Chevrolet car collector. Survivors include daughter, Helen J. Soper of Berkeley Springs; one son, Raymond "Buddy" Merchant of Berkeley Springs; five sisters, Geneva Custer of Martinsburg, Mary Hurley of Ocala, FL, Louise Benavides of Branson, MO, Pauline Asbury and Anna Marie McCumbee, both of Berkeley Springs and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Cain Merchant in 1947; his second wife, Chlorus Yost Merchant in 1996 and one brother, Roscoe Merchant. Funeral services were conducted Friday April 7. Burial was in the Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church Cemetery.4 |

He is survived by his wife Frances Janet VanGosen Cain of Berkeley Springs who he married July 18, 1946; two daughters, Cindy Hovermale and Janet Jones, both of Berkeley Springs; three sons, Larry Cain of Dallas, TX, Dennis Cain and Donald Cain, both of Berkeley Springs; one sister, Gladys Douglas of Falling Waters, WV; four brothers, Stanley Cain, Cledus Cain and Glen Cain, all of Berkeley Springs and Ercil Cain of Martinsburg; 12 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Helen K. Souders; two sisters, Helen Montgomery and Zella Cain; two brothers, Lawrence Cain and Raymond Cain and one granddaughter, Amy Deann Hovermale. Services were held Saturday, November 24, 2001 at 11 a.m. at Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, 106 S. Mercer St., Berkeley Springs with Pastor Ed James officiating. A Purple Heart ceremony service was held Friday, November 23 at 7 p.m. and a Junior Order service was held Friday, November 23 at 8 p.m. Both services were at the Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home. Burial was in Alpine United Methodist Church Cemetery.5 |
