Rankin, who received a crushed chest, was enroute to Berkeley Springs where he was employed by the Pennsylvania Glass Sand Corp. Maryland State Police said the auto operated by Rankin collided with Ralph Brown, also of Hagerstown. Brown and Clarence Reburn, a passenger in the Brown car, were not seriously injured. A native of Morgan County, he was born Sept. 2, 1887, a son of the late Joseph and Mary Charlotte Rankin. He was a veteran of World War 1, serving overseas in the 80th Division. He had lived near Conococheague the past three years. Surviving are his wife, Subina Abbott Rankin; brother, Clarence, Berkeley Springs; and two sisters-Mrs. Floyd Yost, Berkeley Springs; Mrs. Frank Youngblood, Hagerstown. Services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Helsley Funeral Home here with the Rev. Mr. Fahringer, of the Nazarene Church, officiating. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery, Morgan county.2 |

Obit | Edward Garrison's obituary was published in the Morgan Messenger on 30 January 1941: Edward G. Rankin, 44 years, 8 months and 16 days, died at his home here Wednesday morning, January 29, after an illness of several months, the last few weeks being confined to his bed. For a time he was a patient in Mount Alto Hospital, Washington, D.C. The nature of his illness is not definitely known, but is thought to have been a brain condition. The deceased was a World War veteran, serving from July 13, 1918 until September 5, 1919. Most of his service was in France. His widow, three sons, Vernon, Carl and James; two daughters, LeEsta and Rita Lee, all at home survive. His mother, Mrs. Mary Virginia Rankin, three brothers, Charles Elmer and Clarence and two sisters, Mrs. Floyd Yost and Mrs. Frank Youngblood, also survive. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at Bethel Methodist Church with Rev. Geo. D. Naylor officiating. Interment will be in the adjacent cemetery.6 |
