Born in Morgan County, WV on October 21, 1918, he was the son of the late Edward and Lillie Culp Rankin. He was self employed and owned Vernon Rankin Excavating, retiring in 1983.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Hollenbaugh Rankin; one daughter, Lois Jean Rankin of Bay City, TX; three sons, Herbert Wayne Rankin, Sr., Vernon G. Rankin, Jr. and Roy W. Rankin, Sr., all of Berkeley Springs; two sisters, LeEsta Anderson and Rita Lea Lutman, both of Berkeley Springs; 13 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Carl Rankin and James Starliper; and one granddaughter. Services will be held Thursday, August 3, at 11 a.m. at the Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs, with the Rev. Jack Hiles officiating. Interment will be in the Bethel Cemetery, Berkeley Springs.⁴

Seybert; three brothers, Howard of Wakeman, Robert and James of Elyria; a sister, Sarah Seybert also of Elyria and a grandmother, Mrs. Ben Barnes of Wakeman. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. from the Sudro-Curtis Funeral Home with the Rev. William Smith of Oberlin officiating. Burial will be made in Wakeman cemetery.²

Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Betty (nee Hurd); a daughter, Sherry L. of Canton; two sons, James III of Chicago, Timothy of Canton and three granddaughters. Services will be private. The Schneeberger & Son Funeral Home, Canton, is in charge of arrangements.⁴
