He leaves a widow who was Amanda Elizabeth Hardin before her marriage about sixty years ago. She is now 80 years of age. He also leaves a son Elmer of Hagerstown, Md; a daughter Mrs. Chas. Michael, three brothers, William Z., G. Peter and Edward Cain of the county, three half-brothers, Clarence B. of Cumberland, Moody and Bertie Cain of this county, five half-sisters: Mrs. Carrie McKenzie, Mrs. Ernest Thompson, Mrs. O. B. McCoy, Mrs. Emma Michael and Mrs. Esther Bennett, all of this county, three grandchildren and several great grand children. Funeral services were held at the Evangelical church, Spohrs Cross Roads on Saturday at 2 o'clock with the Rev. G.H. Rector officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.13

The funeral will leave the home at 10 o'clock Friday morning and services will be conducted at Highland U.B. Church at 10:30 by Rev. G.H. Rector of the Presbyterian Church here. Interment will be in adjacent cemetery.8

He had lived his entire life in the Duckwall community where he had been a successful farmer. He was a son of the late James and Edna Caw Cain who were also residents of Morgan county. He is survived by two sons, Luther P. Cain at home, Harley Cain and three grandchildren of the county. Five half-sisters, Mrs. Carrie McKenzie, Mrs. Emma Michael, Mrs. Fannie Thompson, Mrs. Edith McCoy and Mrs. Esther Bennett, also one half-brother, Moody Cain, all of the county. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Highland Church with the Rev. Joseph P. Sheesley officiating and burial was in the adjoining cemetery. Pallbearers were Guy F. Spriggs, P.C. Yost, Arthur J. Michael, Perry Carlisle, Roscoe Peer and Daniel Tritapoe. Flower girls were Mrs. Garland Ruppenthal, Mrs. George Leighty, Mrs. John Close, Miss Margaret Tritapoe, Mrs. Harold Michael and Mrs. Billy Michael.4

He was a native of Morgan county having been born in the Duckwall community, a son of the late James and Edna Caue [Caw] Cain. He was a farmer practically all his life. He moved to the Spohrs Cross Roads community 27 years ago and several years ago, after retiring from active farming, opened a small store near his home.
Surviving are his widow, four sons, J. Leslie, Gardner, Robert S. and John L. Cain, one daughter, Mrs. Emory Harden, all of the county; one brother, William Z. Cain, of the Duckwall community; three half-brothers, Clarence, Moody and Birtie, all of the county; five half sisters, Mrs. Carrie McKenzie and Mrs. P.C. Bennett, Baltimore; Mrs. Emma Michael, Mrs. Ernest Thompson and Mrs. O.B. McCoy, all of the county. Funeral services were held Saturday morning at eleven at the Spohrs Cross Roads Evangelical Church with the Rev. E.D. Spencer officiating. Interment was in the adjoining cemetery. Bearers were, Paul Kesecker, W.C. Grove, G.E. Eckerd, Elmer Pentoney, Edgar Pentoney and E. F. Peer.3

James Edward Cain, born May 23, 1868, died in King's Daughters Hospital, Martinsburg, October 30, 1940. The deceased had been in ill health for some months and confined to the house for the past three weeks. He was taken to the hospital Wednesday about noon and died sometime that evening. The body was called for by Funeral Director Hunter and brought to the Hunter Funeral Home where it was prepared for burial and taken to the home in the New Hope community. His widow, one son Early and two daughters, Mrs. Chaffie Bevans and Mrs. Willie Merchant, all of this county survive. A number of brothers and sisters also survive. Funeral services will be held at Highland United Brethern Church Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock.4

Mrs. Delsie (Della) Pearl Cain Kees, 83 years old, widow of John Harrison Kees of Route 2, Hedgesville (Shanghi) died Thursday, May 3, 1979 in the City Hospital where she had been hospitalized for several months. Born on August 27, 1895 in Morgan County, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Christina Michael Cain. Mrs. Kees was a member of the Central Chapel Church at Ganotown. Her husband, John Harrison Kees, died on June 8, 1973.
Surviving are two sons, Lloyd Roscoe Kees, Ganotown, and John Leroy Kees, Jr., Shanghi; one daughter, Mrs. Veda D. Stuck of Shanghi; 11 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. One sister, Mrs. Clara Starliper of Shanghi. Services were conducted Sunday, May 6 from the Brown Funeral Home with Rev. Harold Snyder officiating with interment in Central Chapel Cemetery at Ganotown.2

She had been ill for several months and seriously ill the past eight weeks. Born in Morgan county February 5, 1874, she was a daughter of the late John W. and Anna Lutman Fritzman and had lived all her life here. She was a member of the Mt. Zion E.U.B. Church at Spohrs Cross Roads.
Surviving are the following children-Mrs. Emory Harden, J. Leslie Cain, Gardner Isaac Cain, Robert S., and John Leo Cain, all of Berkeley Springs. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. The body will remain at Parks Funeral Home until time for services Friday afternoon at two o'clock at Spohrs Cross Roads. The Rev. E.R. Kesecker, the pastor, will officiate. Interment will be in the Spohrs Cross Roads cemetery.6

He had been a patient in Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown, Md., and the local hospital for a period of five months. He was a member of Mt. Zion E.U.B. church where he had been active for many years as a Sunday School teacher and secretary of the cemetery committee. Serving as the first Soil Conservation supervisor in Morgan county, a position held many years, he was a farmer and sawmill operator.
Born in Morgan county, February 20, 1894, he was the son of George Peter and Mary Elizabeth Fritzman Cain. He is survived by his wife, the former Hattie Hovermale, two daughters, Mrs. Virginia Somers and Mrs. Iva Lee Clark, Berkeley Springs; three brothers, Robert S., John L., and Gardner I., all of Berkeley Springs; 15 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Services were held Sunday at 2:00 by the Rev. Earl Kesecker at Mt. Zion E.U.B. Church, Spohrs Cross Roads. Interment was in the church cemetery.10

Hattie Rebecca Cain, 85, of Fairfax Street, Berkeley Springs, died Monday, February 20, 1984 in the Winchester Memorial Hospital. Born March 14, 1898 in Morgan County, she was the daughter of the late Albert W. and Mamie Michael Hovermale. She was a member of the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was a former member and officer of the Morgan County Farm Bureau and a member of the Camp Meeting Association. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Leslie Cain in 1963.
Surviving are two daughters, Iva Lea Lantz, Stephen City, Va. And Virginia Somers, Berkeley Springs; two sisters, Genevieve Hofe and Lillian Somers, both of Berkeley Springs; a brother, Floyd Hovermale, Berkeley Springs; 15 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren and 12 great great grandchildren. Services will be held tomorrow, Thursday, February 23, 2:00 p.m., at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with the Rev. Henry Fisher and the Rev. Hennis Fox officiating with burial in the church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the service. Friends will be received at the Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, today, Wednesday, 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00.11

Cain, both of Berkeley Springs; one brother, Robert Cain of Berkeley Springs; 27 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and one great great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife, Clara Householder Cain, who died December 24, 1990. Funeral services were held Thursday, May 16, at 2 p.m. at the Mount Zion United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Joseph Bradshaw. Burial was in the Spohrs Crossroads Cemetery. Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.8
