Gladstone, aged 27, son of Mrs. Blanche Michael and the late Milton U. Michael, died Monday morning about 8:30 at City Hospital, Martinsburg, after an illness which began several weeks ago with a sore throat which was later diagnosed as diphtheria. His condition steadily grew worse and about two weeks ago he was taken to City Hospital, Martinsburg, where it was determined he was suffering from streptococcus, an infection of the blood stream, and everything known to medical science was done in an effort to save his life. Several blood transfusions were given and at times his condition was encouraging to relatives but it is understood that doctors at the hospital had held out very little hope for his recovery from the time he had entered that institution.
Mr. Michael, on the death of his father, which occurred three years ago, November 23d, had take charge of the business management of the tomato canneries operated her and at Great Cacapon, and had become recognized as one of the leading packers of tomatoes in the county. His mother, Mrs. Blanche Michael, and cousin, Ercel Michael, were associated with him in the business.
Surviving are his mother, his widow, formerly Miss Reba Unger, a daughter of James R.S. Unger, a 14 month old son, Jimmie, and two sisters Miss Elsie, at home and Mrs. Mark Hill, Warfordsburg, Pa. The body was prepared for burial by a Martinsburg undertaker and brought to the home here. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, the funeral party leaving the home shortly after 1 o'clock for Mount Tabor United Brethren Church. Rev. W.E. Wolfe, a former pastor of the church, now of Lacy Springs, Va., officiated with Rev. C.J. Racey, the present pastor, and Rev. Robinson of the M.E. Church South, assisting. Interment was in Greenway cemetery here.
