He also was active in the Masonic Lodge and Berkeley Baptist Church. A resident of 413 North Washington Street, Shade was born September 14, 1915, in Morgan County. He was the son of the late Elwood and Gracie Cain Shade. He was a member of the Berkeley Baptist Church, and a member and past master of the Deford Lodge 88, A.F.&A.M. He retired in 1980 as a machinist in the Pennsylvania Glass San Corporation. He served as chairman of the town's water committee. Surviving are his wife, Winona Hofe Shade, at home; a daughter, Joyce Shirley; a son, Wayne Shade, both of Berkeley Springs; two sister, Ethelene Nolan, North Carolina and Juanida Dick, Dallastown, Pa; two brothers, Clarence Shade, Reading, Pa., and Chester Shade, Prescott, Ariz., and two grandchildren. Services were held Tuesday, December 11, at the Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs, with the Rev. Ed Rogers officiating. Burial was in the Great Cacapon Cemetery.1 |

He was also assistant to commander on battle staff. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Fayetteville. He is survived by his wife, Bettie Shade of the home; a son, Mike Shade of San Diego, Calif; two daughters, Beckie Schroeder of Houston, Texas, and Jillmarie Shade of Atlanta, Ga; two step-sons, Lee Halsell of Mountainburg, Ark. And Kent Halsell of Tulsa, Okla; a brother, Clarence Shade of Millsboro, Del; two sisters, Etheline Noland of Millsboro, Del., and Wanida Dick of Dallastown, Pa; one grandson; four step grandchildren; three step great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services were held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 30 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church under the direction of Moore's Chapel, with Rev. George A. Gilbert, Jr. officiating. Burial was at National cemetery in Fayetteville with full military honors.2 |
