Melvin C. McBee, 74, of Berkeley Springs, died Monday, March 25, 1991, in Berkeley Springs. Born December 14, 1916, in Morgan County, he was the son of the late Charles Kelly and Nettie (Lopp) McBee.
He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, Berkeley Springs for more than 40 years. He served in many offices of the local church and of the district. For ore than 25 years he served as a lay leader of the church and has always taught a Sunday school class. He was the teacher of the Melvin C. McBee Sunday Sunday_School Class; and a young adult Sunday school class for many years. Other church responsibilities included a delegate to the Baltimore United Methodist Conference; an alternate delegate to the General Conference; Sunday School superintendent; chairman of the Finance Committee; former president of the church trustees; and youth group leader.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Asiatic-Pacific theater with Headquarters Company, 5th; regiment. He was decorated with the Bronze Star and the Bronze Star medal. He was retired from the Chessie system after 40 years o service. He was a member of the DeFord Masonic Lodge No. 88, Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons; he served in various capacities with MCEAT, where he hade been a past president. He was a former Morgan County Volunteer of the Year. He was a member of the American Legion Post No 60; and a member of the American Association of Retired Persons.
Surviving are his wife, Iva Lee (Weber) McBee at home; one daughter, Deborah Seldomridge of Keyser; one sister, Esther Trazkovich of Westminster, Md; and two grandchildren. Ser vices will be held Thursday, march 28, at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sheldon Reese officiating, assisted by the Rev. Charles b. Weber. Interment will e in Spohrs Crossroads Cemetery, near Berkeley springs. The family will receive friends at the Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home today, Wednesday, March 27, from 7 to 9 p.m.4

He was a member of the Junior Order United American Mechanics Council No. 117; Morgan County Senior Citizens Kitchen Bank; A.A.R.P; and the Association of Retired School Employees.
Surviving are his wife, Viola (McCoy) McBee; one daughter, Linda S. Unger of Berkeley Springs; one sister, Esther Lea Trazkovich of Westminster, Md; one brother, Melvin C. McBee of Berkeley Springs; and three grandsons. Services were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 1, at the Trinity United Methodist Church with the Revs. Ralph Funkhouse, Joseph Bradshaw and H. Wilbur Jay officiating. Interment was in Spohrs Crossroads Cemetery. Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs, was in charge of arrangements.1

John William Braithwaite, 74, prominent retired merchant here, died Sunday morning at his home on South Washington Street following an illness of several months. He was a native of Frederick County, Virginia, a son of the late Oliver D., and Lydia Ann Kerns Braithwaite and was born June 6, 1878.
His first work here in the general merchandising business was with F.W. Yancey and Co., where in 1906 he was employed as a clerk. This business was operated in the building now occupied by Warm Springs Restaurant. Later he was employed as chief clerk in the Community Store operated by the late Henry Freedman. This was where Floyd's place is now located. Fro 1913 to 1918 he was assistant manager of Hotel Washington. He held a similar position for a short time at the Evans Hotel in Winchester. Returning here he opened a general store which he and his wife operated until his illness forced him to give up the work. For a few weeks during his illness the store remained closed. Since the first of this year the store has been under lease and operated as Hardin's Grocery. He was a member of the Jr. O.U.A.M. and the Methodist Church here.
Surviving are his wife, the former Agnes Iden, at the home one daughter, Mrs. J.W. Fulton, Berkeley Springs; one son, Willard I., Berkeley Springs; one sister, Mrs. Oliver DeHaven, Winchester, Va; two brothers-O. Hollis Braithwaite, Whitacre, Va; Dora Braithwaite, Cross Junction, Va; two half sisters-Mrs. Roy Willy, and Mrs. Harry Buncutter, Winchester; step mother, Mrs. C.D. Braithwaite, Winchester; and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Henry H. Rowland, pastor of the Methodist Church, officiating, assisted by the Rev. H. Middleton Raynal, pastor of the Presbyterian Church. Burial was in Greenway Cemetery. Honorary bearers were Floyd Yost, A.C. Kline, W.B. Fearnow, Henry Gray, H.D. Beeler, Henry Gorrell, T.E. Ditto, Wendell Kerns and S.S. Buzzerd. Active bearers were Vernon Henry, Harry Widmyer, Albert Butler, Roscoe Barney, Hunton Hardin and Stanley Fearnow.3

Mrs. Mary Betty Iden died suddenly Saturday evening, February 2, at her home in Davis. She was born April 16, 1879 at Franklin, a daughter of the late Josiah and Mary Simmons and had resided in Davis the past sixty years.
She is survived by her husband, N. Sherman Iden of Davis; five sons, Irvin and Fred of Buckhannon; Marvin, of Philippi; Richard of Charlotte, N.C., and Robert of Morgantown; three daughters, Mrs. Audra Evans of Bayard; Miss Josie Iden of Oakland, Md; and Mrs. Nellie Minney of Morgantown; two brothers, John Simons, of Harrisonburg, Va., and Charles Simmons of Franklin; one sister, Mrs. Ernest Mullenix of Flintstone, Md; thirteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at the home Tuesday, February 5 by the Rev. A.B. Man, pastor of Davis Presbyterian Church. Burial was in the Davis cemetery.
Local people to attend the funeral of Mrs. Iden were Mrs. Agnes Braithwaite, sister-in-law of the deceased, Mrs. Harry M. Busey of Berkeley Springs; and Ernest Iden, of Hancock, Md; Mr. And Mrs. Wade Iden of Cumberland and Mr. And Mrs. Harry D. Iden of Hyattsville, Md.
Sherman Iden, husband of the deceased, was born and reared in Morgan County. When 17 years of age he went to Davis where he found employment with the Babcock Lumber Co., and remained with the company for fifty years.4

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, September 20, at the Mount Olivet United Methodist Church near Berkeley Springs. Pastor William Clark will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.5

She is survived by two daughters, Shirley Mills of Hancock and Patsy Mills of Warfordsburg, Pa; six sons, Kenneth Iden, Harry Iden, Junior Iden, James Iden, Melvin Iden and Paul Iden, all of Hancock; one sister, Nancy Stotler of Berkeley Springs, W. Va; 39 grandchildren; 79 great grandchildren; and six great great grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, September 20, at the Mount Olivet United Methodist Church near Berkeley Springs. Pastor William Clark will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.7 
Death*She died on 17 September 1990 at Hancock, Washington, Maryland, at age 96; buried at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery.2

He was a former employee of the town of Hancock. He was a Veteran of World War II.6
