Divorce*She and Alexander Curtis were divorced circa 11 March 1881 at Rochester, Fulton, Indiana;
Alex. Curtis is one of the old pioneers of Henry township. He lived there when the Indians sounded their war whoops and before there was a 'stick missing' from the woods. . . . He raised a large family of children and counts quite a number of grandchildren, and now in old age he asks to be released from the woman he took by the hand in early youth and vowed to love and protect through all the days of their lives . . . (5 February 1881)

After a great deal of trouble and vexatious delays, Alex. Curtis, of Akron, succeeded in procuring a divorce from his wife and is now a free and happy old man, to pasture in the greenest fields he can find and spend his time and money as he pleases without any one to interpose an objection. A satisfactory division of the large estate was made, in which, as usual, the husband got the lion's share. (11 March 1881.)14
(Witness) ObitMatilda Wagener witnessed the Obit of Alexander Curtis on 3 November 1883 at Rochester Sentinel, Rochester, Fulton, Indiana,
Died: At his home near Akron, Oct. 27th, 1883, Alexander Curtis, aged 67 years, 4 months and 25 days.
(Later date) Henry township has lost another of its old and prominent citizens in the death of Alexander Curtis, whose death occurred last Saturday morning at the residence of Mrs. Hoover, his sister, living near Hoover Station. The deceased came from Ohio to this county many years ago and by frugality and industry in mercantile and farming pursuits, he accumulated a vast property. For several years he has been an invalid and sought health and comfort at many points of interest without avail. Whatever may have been his faults in life, they are largely obscured by the good he did in the community in which he lived so long. Knowing that death was near at hand he made his will some time ago, bequeathing his property to his children and his grandchildren. His funeral took place last Sunday and his remains found a resting place on the old homestead farm, one mile west of Akron, where rests those of his family who have preceded him to the unknown world. Mr. Curtis was 67 years of age.15
(Witness) BioAlexander Curtis. The subject of this sketch was born in Miami County, Ohio, June 2, 1816, being the oldest son of James and Elizabeth Curtis, who were natives of North Carolina and were of German and English descent. Mr. C attended the common schools, receiving a fair education for those early days in a new country and followed farming until about five years after his marriage, which event occurred January 1, 1837, the bride being Miss Matilda Wagoner, born in Virginia.
After ceasing the work of the farm, he embarked in a mercantile enterprise in Fredericktown, Ohio, which he successfully conducted until the fall of 1845, when, selling his store, he came to Indiana and re-engaged in the pursuits of the farm, locating on what is still the homestead, one mile west of Akron, on which at that time there had been but a small field cleared and a log cabin built.
Mr. Curtis has lived to see what was then an almost unbroken expanse of forest reduced to a state of fertility and productiveness by the hand of industry and perseverance and the log cabin superseded by a handsome brick residence surrounded by convenient barns to shelter stock and in which to store away farm products. Mr. C. has been largely engaged in the shipment of livestock and grain, and was for some years onnected with a store in Akron, but is now retiring from all the active concerns of life.
This marriage has been blessed with five children, of whom only James Curtis and Nancy Burns are now living. Alexander, Jr., enlisted in Company G, One Hundred and Twenty-eighth Indiana Infantry, in 162, and participated in all the battles of that regiment until the close of the war, when he was mustered out at Atlanta, Ga. Returning home he died suddenly in the following spring of 1866, aged twenty-three years.
James Curtis, Mr. A. Curtis' father, was born of English parents in North Carolina, about the year 1777, and came to Miami County, Ohio, in 1801, where he entered 160 acres of land to which he removed his widowed mother and her family in 1802. About the year 1803, he married Miss Elizabeth Byrkit, a lady his junior by five years, and a native of North Carolina, of German lineage. Mrs. Curtis, Jr., the daughter of John and Nancy Wagoner, was born near Bath, Va., in October, 1808.16
Will*Matilda Wagener left a will on 25 April 1884 at Fulton, Indiana; proven 4 September 1897.17
Death*She died on 11 June 1897 at Fulton, Indiana, at age 88; buried at James Curtis Farm Cemetery, Henry Twp; no obituary in Sentinel index.18

PACKING PORT. One of the principal stock buyers of this county, Mr. Alexander CURTIS, of Akron, together with John F. FROMM, is now engaged in the pork packing business in this place.
Mr. Curtis is buying hogs that are being barreled by expert packers in the north room of Fromm's frame building. Both of these gentlemen have had much experience in the pork business and are capable of conducting it on an extensive scale, which they are thinking of doing. Just at this stage of the hog market, the outlook is favorable for packers, and it is altogether likely that Messrs. CURTIS & FROMM will carry on their new branch of trade as long as the prospects are as good as they are at present. We hope it will prove a profitable investment for the Rochester packers.10
