ObitWalter Makepeace's obituary was published in the Courier-Tribune on 11 July 1955:
A native of Franklinville, Rev. Walter Makepeace Curtis, 87, died Thursday afternoon at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. He was a retired Methodist minister and Greensboro College staff member for 34 years. The Rev. Mr. Curtis attended Bingham School and the University of North Carolina Conference in Concord in 1890 and was assigned to the Zion-Prospect charge near Thomasville, serving four churches. He was instrumental in building a parsonage in East Winston and churches at Mount Vernon and at Crew’s and Love’s in Walkertown in the Kernersville circuit. Later, he helped in the building of a church at Farmington.
He was a strong leader against saloons in Winston and distilleries in Davie County and once went to Raleigh to appeal to the Legislature to outlaw the Davie stills. In June 1905, he began his service with Greensboro College, first acting as secretary and treasurer of the college. Later, he became business manager, a position from which he retired in 1939. He moved to Chapel Hill, where he resided until four years ago when he made his home at 492 Knollwood Ave. in Winston-Salem. During his residency here, Rev. Mr. Curtis raised the college’s first $100,000 endowment, secured funds for the construction of Fitzgerald Hall and established a scholarship in memory of his mother.
He was twice married, to the former Kate Wright of Thomasville, who died in 1903 and the former Letitia Evans of Greenville, who survives. Also surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Joe E. Collier of Bronxville, N.Y., Mrs. Lindsay Moore of Ashland, Va., Mrs. Percy G. Welch of Renton, Wash., Mrs. J. Howard Moser of Winston-Salem, and Mrs. Glenn E. Anderson of Raleigh; two sons, Paul M. Curtis of Fairfax, Calif., and Walter M. Curtis Jr. of Grand Island, Neb; 18 grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.
The Rev. Mr. Curtis had been ill since January. The funeral services were held Saturday morning at 11 o’clock at Centenary Methodist church in Winston-Salem by Dr. Mark Depp. Burial was in Green Hill cemetery, Greensboro.11

ObitGrace Elizabeth's obituary was published in the Greensboro News & Record on 18 August 2006:
RALEIGH-Grace Elizabeth Curtis Anderson, 92, died Wednesday, August 16, 2006, in Raleigh. Born on January 31, 1914 in Greensboro, Grace was the daughter of the late Rev. Walter Makepeace Curtis and Letitia Evans Curtis. She and her seven brothers and sisters grew up at 108 Odell Place, a home now part of the historic Greensboro College campus. Her father was a circuit-riding Methodist minister who served as Business Manager and Treasurer at Greensboro College for many years. Her mother lived in an orphanage in Greenville, N.C. where her Evans family name is a prominent part of that city's history. Because of the long Curtis connection to Greensboro College, Rev. Curtis set up a scholarship in memory of Grace' grandmother, mother, and sister. Grace, like her sisters, was a member of the DAR through her father's side of the family.
A 1930 graduate of Greensboro High School (now Grimsley High School), Grace drew on her considerable writing talents to become assistant editor for "Homespun," the school's literary publication. She spent her first year of higher education at Greensboro College and completed it at Duke University, earning degrees in French, English, and Spanish. Again, she held editorial positions with "The Chronicle," winning awards for her short story writing and poetry. At Duke, Grace met the love of her life, Glenn E. Anderson, Class of 1934. Graduating a year early in 1933, she stuck around to tutor Glenn through his remaining French class.
During their five-year courtship, Grace worked for the N. C. Textbook Commission, Pilot Life Insurance Co., and the U.S. Government in Washington, D.C. before marrying Glenn in 1936 and settling in Raleigh. Grace's high school stenographic skills remained sharp enough to fill in for Glenn's secretary at Carolina Securities Corp well into the '70s. She and Glenn were formidable bridge partners, especially when they played Blackwood Convention, and they enjoyed annual golf excursions to Linville, NC with their friends. Grace was an avid reader and held every office in the Readers Guild Book Club of Raleigh spanning many years. Quite the grammarian, Grace never missed a chance for a good-natured challenge to her family's English. During her early married life, she was active in the Raleigh Junior Woman's Club, where she served as historian, rose to the office of Vice President, and worked at the state level. After her children were grown, she volunteered for over 20 years at Rex Hospital. Her family established a scholarship in her honor to encourage others to volunteer, especially teenagers planning to pursue a career in the healthcare field. Grace loved attending the Asbury-King Class and church at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church, where she and Glenn were one year shy of charter membership. Being a preacher's kid, she enjoyed singing the old hymns and frequently plunked them out on the piano at home. Church members fondly referred to her as "Amazing Grace."
Grace cherished her roles as loving wife, mother, and grandmother. For all her scholastic achievements, participation in various clubs, and volunteer work, Grace would be the first to tell anyone that her greatest accomplishment and privilege was sharing Glenn's life as his partner and best friend. Accomplished in her own right, she was wise enough to provide unflagging support to Glenn without losing herself in the process. They remained lovebirds throughout their 62-year marriage, and they set an admirable example for their two children and all who came in contact with them. "Grace 'n Glenn" were inseparable, and now they are reunited. Grace has "crossed the bar."
Grace is predeceased by her parents; her husband, Glenn E. Anderson; a grandson, Christopher Curtis Anderson; her sisters: Lucy K. Curtis, Katharine Curtis Collier, Ruth Curtis Moore, Marion Curtis Moser; and one brother, Walter Makepeace Curtis, Jr.. She is survived by her son, Glenn E. Anderson, Jr. (Chip) and his wife, Judy, of Raleigh; her daughter, Charlotte Anderson Straney, of Burlington; one grandson, Kevin Tyler Anderson and his wife, Perrior, of Raleigh; two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Garrett Anderson, of Raleigh; her brother, Paul Makepeace Curtis, of Tucson, AZ; and her sister, Helen Curtis Welch, of Malvern, PA.
The family would be honored if friends wish to make contributions to Greensboro College (the Lucy and Letitia Evans Curtis Scholarship Fund), 815 West Market Street, Greensboro, NC 27401; Rex Healthcare Foundation (Grace Curtis Anderson Scholarship), 2500 Blue Ridge Road, Suite 325, Raleigh, NC 27607; or Hayes Barton United Methodist Church, 2209 Fairview Road, Raleigh, NC 27608, in Grace's memory. Visitation will be on Saturday, August 19, 2006 ,from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Hayes Barton United Methodist Church, 2209 Fairview Road, Raleigh, NC. The funeral service will follow at 1:30 in the sanctuary. Brown-Wynne Funeral Homes and Crematory on St. Mary's Street is handling arrangements.6
