Obit | William Sherman's obituary was published in the Times on 19 October 1956: William Sherman Palmer, 90, retired Chattanooga businessman and one of the oldest members of the Elks Club, died yesterday morning in a local hospital. Mr. Palmer lived at 1917 Bailey Ave. Mr. Palmer was in the wholesale grain business for a number of years with offices in New Orleans and Chattanooga. He moved to Chattanooga in 1910 and organized the Palmer Clothing Co., manufacturers and retailers of men’s clothing. He also organized the Palmer Hardware Co. here. Mr. Palmer is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Dilla Keener, Chattanooga; Mrs. P.H. Wood, Chattanooga; three sons, W.M. and Charles A. Palmer, Memphis; Fred R. Palmer, San Antonio, Tex; grandchildren, Mrs. John E. Stone II, Hattiesburg, Miss; Mrs. Bert Wills Jr., Chattanooga; P. Hewitt Wood, Georgia Tech, Atlanta; Mrs. Gilbert Roberts III, Nashville; Mrs. Thomas E. Samuels, Memphis; brother, R.A. Palmer, Talladega Springs, Ala; six great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Palmer’s wife, the former Miss Mary Alice Edwards of Bradley County, died in 1951. Funeral services will be held at 11 o’clock this morning at the grave in Forest Hills Cemetery, with Dr. J. Monroe Wolfe officiating. The body is at the National Funeral Home.2 |

Obit* | Alice Lee's obituary was published in the Unknown Newspaper on circa 6 February 1986: Mrs. Alice Myers Edwards, 61, of Charleston, died Wednesday in Bradley Memorial Hospital. A native of McMinn County, she was a daughter of Mrs. Blanche Lipps Myers and the late Gideon R. Myers. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Myers. Mrs. Edwards was a graduate of Tennessee Wesleyan College and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. She taught at Calhoun High School for 33 years and was serving as a teacher at Calhoun Elementary School at the time of her death. She was a member of McMinn County Education Association and the Tennessee Education Association. She was named McMinn County’s Teacher of the Year in 1971 by Athens Pilot Club. She was a lifelong member of Calhoun United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher and a youth counselor. She was also a member of the Calhoun Chapter 187 Order of the Eastern Star. Survivors include her husband, Pharis W. Edwards of Charleston; a daughter, Mrs. Frances Rogers of Conyers, Ga; a son, Richard Edwards of Charleston; two granddaughters, Miss Melanie Rogers and Miss Susannah Rogers, both of Conyers, Ga; mother, Mrs. Blanche Lipps Myers of Calhoun; sister, Mrs. Betty Harper of Cleveland; three brothers, Russell Myers of Knoxville, Fred Myers of Gainesville, Ga., and Felix Myers of Chattanooga. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Calhoun United Methodist Church with the Revs. Charles Page and George St. Clair officiating. Burial will follow in Calhoun Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ed Scott, Vernon Burris, Jim Lane, Hugh Bryan Sr., Hugh Bryan Jr. and Willis Bryan. Honorary pallbearers will be Emmett Kirkland, Bill Hicks, and Melvin Myers.2 |
