Haney, former editor and publisher of The Monticello News, died in a Covington hospital early Wednesday after he was stricken with a heart on the Square Tuesday. He was 61. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Jordan Funeral Home, with the Rev. Blake Bradley officiating. Burial will be in West View Cemetery. Mr. Haney retired as editor and publisher of The News in March of 1975 after serving 13 years in that capacity. He had suffered a heart attack the previous September and was under doctor’s orders not to take up full time duties as editor and publisher of the newspaper. His career in printing and newspapers went back to 1930 when, at age 14, he became a printer’s devil in his native, Athens, Tenn. His career took him to a half dozen newspapers in Tennessee and eventually to one in Michigan. From there he came to Atlanta and worked at The Covington News. Then he purchased The Monticello News, becoming only its third owner since the Penn family began publishing it in 1881.
Mr. Haney grew up in McMinn County, Tenn., and among other pursuits, became a boxer of some repute—an avocation he followed until he was 33. “I loved the ring, but I loved newspapers more,” he once said. Mr. Haney was a deputy in the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, and had worked there in recent as a part-time dispatcher. He was a Mason and a member of the Monticello Presbyterian Church.
The son of the late Oscar and Della Curtis Haney, he was married in 1944 to the former Gwen Johnston, who survives him along with their children, Delores Ann Higgins and Jack V. Haney, both of Conyers, and four grandchildren. |
