James Ervin Key, age 79, of the Clearwater Community, a retired employee of the Athens Stove Company, died at his home early Sunday morning after a lingering illness. Mr. Key, a native of McMinn County, was the son of the late Giles and Nancy Spears Key. He was a member and deacon of the McMahan Calvary Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lillie Mae Curtis Key of Athens; three daughters, Mrs. Ray Knox of Athens; Mrs. Hubert Owens and Mrs. Edward Hughes, both of Niota; four sons, James Mitchell Key of Taylor, Michigan, William A. Key of Athens, H.N. Key of Seymour, Tennessee and L.C. Key of Athens; 19 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Mallie Smithey of Greenback; one brother, Canney Key of Lenoir City. Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the McMahan Calvary Baptist Church with the Revs. Keller Brown and Billy Liner officiating. Interment will be in the Clearwater Cemetery.2

William Edward Hughes, 75, of Niota, died Monday, Sept. 8, 1997. A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late James Thomas and Mary Ellen “Mamie” Henderson Hughes. He was a member of the Clearwater Baptist Church, the McMinn County Farm Bureau and the McMinn-Loudon Farmers Co-Op.

Marjorie Tinker Key, 88, of Paragould, Ark., died Friday, Feb. 10, 2006, at her residence. Born in Sevierville on Jan. 10, 1918, to the late Blain and Litha Mae McMahan Tinker, she was a former resident of Ocala, Fla., and had been a resident of Paragould, Ark., since 1981. She was a member of the New Antioch Baptist Church and was a lifetime member of the Flat Rock, Mich., No. 156 Order of the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Mitchell Key, on Nov. 19, 1979; and two sons, Wayne Key and Curtiss Key.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Betty Jo and Johnny Carr of Paragould, Ark; two brothers, Wallace Sutton of Cohutta, Ga., and Millard Sutton of Cleveland; one sister, Mary Dell Kilgore of Cohutta, Ga; four grandchildren, Lisa Lester, Linda Twigg, Wanda Dennis and Kelly Smith; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and two great-great-grandchildren. Curtiss Key, 63, of Vienna, Ill., died Wednesday morning, Dec. 14, 2005, at Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, Ky. A native of Athens, a longtime resident of Vienna, Ill., and a former resident of Athens, he was a son of the late James Mitchell Key and was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by one brother, Wayne Key, and was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served from 1956-1979. He had served as a Senior Chief Machinist Mate and served during the Vietnam Conflict. He was the owner and operator of Curt´s Appliance Service in Athens from 1980-1989 and in Vienna, Ill. from 1990-1996. He enjoyed fishing, making knives and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Wilma Black Key of Vienna, Ill; two daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Tracy Dennis of Athens, and Kelly and Sam Smith of Portland; eight grandchildren, Tracy, Kyle, Gabi, Peter and Robert Dennis, all of Athens, Taylor Engstrom and husband, Matt, of Virginia Beach, Va., and Caleb and Joseph Smith, both of Portland; two great-grandchildren, Miaya and Arienne; his mother, Marjorie Lee Tinker Key of Paragould, Ark; and one sister and brother-in-law, Betty Jo and Johnny Carr of Paragould, Ark. Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Monday at Clearwater Baptist Church with Dr. Carlos Peterson officiating. Burial will follow in Clearwater Cemetery with full military honors. Ziegler Funeral Home of Athens is in charge of arrangements.1
