Thomas Curtis1
M, b. circa 1725, d. before 1790
Birth* | Thomas Curtis was born circa 1725 at Virginia; no record of age, parents or children.1 |
NoteB | Thomas Curtis is a candidate to be the father of Fielding, John, Moses, James and possibly Hillery. He obtained and sold land in the same area where they each purchased and sold land later. However, there are no records that connect Thomas to them and there are several possibly significant inconsistencies, e.g., (1) none of them obtained land from Thomas, (2) Thomas obtained land in South Carolina four years before Fielding was born in Virginia, and (3) the name Thomas does not appear in the next two generations of living descendants. |
NoteB | On 4 August 1752, Thomas Curtis received a grant from George Hunter Esq., his Majesty's agent, for a 200 acre tract of land lying on a branch of Broad River called Linwells(?). The tract was surveyed and certified on 30 July 1753 by John Hamilton. A 1767 grant to William Rodgers of 150 acres was identified as lying on a branch of the Tyger River called Padgets Creek, and next to a tract owned by Thomas Curtis. In 1767 the property was in Berkly County. Several other small grants to Thomas Curtis also appear in the same records.2 |
NoteB* | The name Thomas Curtis appears on an undated petition by the Citizens of Spartanburg, York, and Union Districts for the improvement of the navigation of Broad River (South Carolina Archives online index.) |
NoteB | On 11 May 1772, Mordecai McFarland surveyed a 100 acre tract of land lying in St. Mathews Parish, Berkeley County, granted to Thomas Curtis on 5 May 1772.3 |
NoteB | On 5 March 1775, Thomas Curtis sold to William Orr for 400 pounds a 200 acre tract of land granted to him by Governor James Glen on [date missing], and on 2 February 1780, William Orr sold the property to William Rogers, then described as lying on the Tyger River in Ninety Six District. In another transaction dated 27 November 1805, John Bond sold to Philip Littlefield part of a 640 acre tract that Bond purchased from Thomas Curtis (no date given).4 |
Milit-Beg* | He began military service on 4 November 1775 at South Carolina as a drummer, 2nd South Carolina Regiment, commanded by Lt. Col. Marion. Seems more likely this was a younger Thomas Curtis, as drummers typically were boys.5 |
Milit-End* | He ended military service on 14 July 1778 at South Carolina.5 |
NoteB | Thomas Curtis filed claims for the cost of provisions and forage provided to American troops, including those of Colonel Marion, on several occasions between 1781 and 1784.1 |
DeathAp* | He appears to have died or disappeared before 1790 at South Carolina no further records for Thomas after the private claim filed in 1784.6 |
