(Witness) Bio | [Brøderbund WFT Vol. 10, Ed. 1, Tree #3180] Wiliam Green PETTY joined the Arkansas 3rd Calvary on January 19, 1865 at Lewisburg, Pope County, Arkansas. His bookmark was #7114 B 1873. He enlisted for a 3 year term. Enlistment papers state that his occupation was a farmer, thet he was 6'2' tall, he had blue eyes, light hair, and light complexion. He was 23 years old at the time of enlistment, and the Civil War was going on. On Feburary 16, 1865 he was sent special orders to report to D.B. Rufsill for special duty. A story told by Ruben H. PETTY to his son, Joe R. PETTY, was that William Green PETTY knew the mountains around Pope County and the surrounding areas pretty well, so he was assigned to a secret group called the "ridge runners." This was a group of solders and civilians that would slip into enemy camps of the Northern army and steal supplies for the South. His offical job title on army papers was, "company cook." He was in the army until June 30, 1865 when he was discharged. The Civil War had ended. He was paid $100.00 upon discharge. William returned to Hector in Pope County after the war. He was a farmer. Shortly after returning, William, or Bill (Uncle Billy) as he was called, married Elizabeth Caudle. They lived near Hector in a area called "Petty Town." Bill and Elizabeth owned land there. Among other crops, they had a peach orchard. They had five children, three girls and two boys. As told to Robert Petty, his father , John Guilford Petty said that Bill Petty was a avid fox hunter and always kept a bunch of dogs around. John told that sometimes you couldn't get to the fire for the dogs. The word was out in PETTY TOWN that you could kick one of the kids out of the way and that was O.K., but NEVER, NEVER kick one of his dogs!! He was a big man and had very large hands, he was a fast worker. Bill could unload a load of corn from a wagon with his hands before most men could with a scoop shovel. Bill also liked his "mountain dew" as most Petty men did! In 1882, Elizabeth died and the following year, Bill married Mary Ann CURTIS, the sister of Bill's daughter-in-law Rebecca CURTIS. They had six children. Mary Ann is buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery near Wm. G. Petty. Verlyn McAFEE remembers going to visit her grandparents and seeing a pile of lumber in the hallway, just past the kitchen. She says it was there for as long as she can remember and was told it was to build her Grandpa Bill's coffin when he died. She says she remembers that when he died, some men came over to build his coffin from this pile of lumber. She was very upset by this. She does not know why he would have the lumber so far in advance, or if the wood had some special meaning to him, but she does remember hearing it said that thought he was going to die years before he actually did. Ruben Harrison Petty told his son, Joe Ruben Petty, that his grandfather, William Greem Petty was friends with Frank James, of the Jesse James Gang. The story is that Frank lived near Hector, Arkansas and sometimes went by the name Frank Petty to avoid being arrested. Both William Green Petty and Frank James served in the Confederate army in a special guerrilla force called Ridge Runners. This is a story that has been verified by several family members, but is not proven.3 |

(Witness) Bio | Joseph H. Petty was born in Hector, Arkanas to William Green Petty and Elizabeth Caudle. His father was a farmer and was from one the the first pioneer families of Pope County. He married Rebecca Curtis and they had a large family. Joseph and Becky were parents to thirteen children, three of which died as small children. As told by Verlyn Petty McAfee, the family moved from Hector to Webber's Fall, Oklahoma when she was a small child. The family traveled there by covered wagon. She recalls that the only way to cross the Arkansas River at Fort Smith was on a railroad bridge. When it became time to cross the river, the children told their father, Joseph Petty, that they could hear a train coming, but their father told them that they had plenty of time to make the crossing. Well, part way across the river the train is in sight so Joseph was yelling and whipping the team to try and get them to move a little faster. The family made it across the river and off the bridge just as the train passed. Needless to say, they were all scared silly, but they were all safe. While traveling, the family had to camp at night, so they would take the "sheets" off of the wagon and construct a cover under the trees to sleep under. Verlyn says that her and the other small children, Vergie, Joe, and Daniel, were afraid that they would be attacked by Indians. They were traveling in the Fall, and she said it was very cold. The family did not stay in Oklahoma for very long, Joseph and Becky did not like Oklahoma, so they loaded the family back in the covered wagon and moved back to Pope County. Verlyn tells about her father raising peanuts, and in the Fall the peanuts had to be pulled and put in the loft of the barn. Then on rainy days, the kids would set in the barn and pull the peanuts off the vines so they could be taken to market. The family also raised corn, and after it was harvested, it would be but up to dry, then the family would "shuck" the dried corn from the cob, and they would take it by wagon to Hector to the mill to grind it into cornmeal. Verlyn recalls going to visit Aunt Adder, a eldery women that lived at the corner where the road to Walnut Grove started. Aunt Adder was a marvolous person, she always had stories to tell, and something neat to show you. She had lived near Hector forever! Verlyn remembers her being "old" when she was a child, but I also remember meeting her in 1969 while visiting my Grandparents, Ruben and Edna Petty. She was really old by that time. Verlyn tells of going to numerous meetings and funerals at the Walnut Grove Cemetery. This is where most of the Petty's were buried in the early days, and where most are being buried now. To get to go to "town", Russellville, from Hector was a real treat. The trip would take all day by wagon and was only made when necessary to get supplies, about once every month or so. Verlyn remembers getting to go several times. All the children could not go at once, so they took turns going. There was a large building there, Verlyn does not remember what it was called, but it had a large fire pit in the middle, and all the traverlers that stayed there cooked their meals over the fire. Becky would take a feather bed along, and the family would sleep on the feather bed, then load it back on the wagon for the trip home. In 1920, the 18th Amendment to the Constitution went into effect. This amendment prohibited the export, import, manufacture, sale , and transportation of alcoholic beverages in the United States, thus came the name "Prohibition." The Volsted Act set up penalties for violations of prohibition. Thousands of Americans began to disobey the Volstead Act almost as soon as it enacted. The Petty's were no exception. They did not believe that the government had the right to control a person's life. Joseph Petty and his sons had a still on Adam's Mountain. They made moonshine whiskey, reported to be some of the best made. But the Revenue Agents made life hard for anyone trying to make a living running moonshine. Joseph Petty and his son Ruben, sank a still in a deep hole in a creek on Adams Mountain to keep the Agents from finding it. My father, Joe Ruben, had hopes of one day finding and retrieving his Father's still. Prohibition ended in 1933. In about 1928, the family moved from Pope County to Biscoe, Arkansas. This was at the beginning of "The Great Depression" and the family left their farms on Adam's Mountain to move to an area where they could make a living for their families. The depression was in full swing by 1930 and in addition to the bad economic times, Verlyn says that there was also a drought in Arkansas. Times were very hard, and the children also had to work on the farms just so the family could survive. There wasn't much time to go to school. Lessons were squeezed in between crops being planted and harvested. To get a second or third grade education was a real treat. Verlyn says she remembers going to a one room school house after they moved to Biscoe, but the children did't get to go very much. It is was not unusual for people of this generation and the next generation not to be able to read or write, or at least have a very limited ability. Even though they felt that a education was important, survival was more important. By the time the depression was over, the Federal Government had bought the land on Adam's Mountain, paying very little per acre, and had plans to make it a national forest. Most of the Petty family stayed in the Biscoe and DeValls Bluff area or moved to Arizona or California. Joseph Petty died and is buried in the Biscoe Cemetery.4 |
