John Robert Curtis served in the Confederate forces. His name appears on a monument in old court square in Troy, Alabama. He served in the state legislature in the 1890s. He owned slaves before the Civil War. He lived in China Grove, Pike, Alabama and had no children. He left an extensive estate and a recorded will. Nephews W. D. and J.A. Curtis served as administrators. John Robert shot and killed John Watson in self defense on the town square in Troy, Alabama. After this, James Taylor, his father, moved to Montgomery County and John Robert moved to China Grove. James Taylor retained his land in Mossy Grove and after his death, James Jefferson, moved back to Mossy Grove.
