(Witness) Obit | He witnessed the Obit of Catherine Mary Riordan on 27 February 2016 at Jersey City Journal, Jersey City, Hudson, New Jersey, CATHERINE MARY CURTIS Catherine Mary Curtis (nee Riordan), a proud mother of 8 and grandmother of 13 died on February 25, 2016. She was 82 years old. Beautiful and charming, Catherine had enchanted her late husband Warren Curtis into a lifelong marriage of love and partnership. His untimely loss in 2010 had shaken her, but it could not dim her Irish sense of humor or her strong sense of spirituality. She remained strong after his death and continued to inspire her children and grandchildren as the matriarch of the family. Catherine was truly selfless. As a young mother she did not eat until she had fed all her children. She did not sleep until she was sure her children had all been safely put to bed. She was uniquely able to nurture each of her 8 children individually, so as to make each of them feel loved and admired. Throughout her life she quietly and without complaint went without, to ensure all her children always had plenty. Her generous spirit placed her husband and her family above all and they in turn loved and admired her. She was the "glue" that kept the family together in good times and bad. The many visitors to her home witnessed first-hand Catherine's pride in the family she had raised, as evidenced by the numerous photographs of her loving children, her grandchildren and her extended family that she used to surround her on the walls of her home. These photographs, however, were not mere decorations; instead they were a testament to a life that had been well lived and always full of love.
She is survived by her children Wilhelmina (Robert), Warren Kevin (Shelia), Mark (Diana), Charles (Julia), Christine (Sal), Carol (Eric) Sisterhen, Thomas (Rahat) and Lynn (Michael) Vinegra and by her grandchildren; Zachary, Catherine, Zoe, Abby, Devin, Emily, Jacob, William, Sarah, Aedan, Hannah, Grace and Alicia and by her brothers, Edward (Barbara) Riordan and James (Joan) Riordan. Catherine took great pride in her children and grandchildren and in their many accomplishments. The final year of Catherine's life gave those who loved her, the honor of caring for her. Despite her declining health Catherine continued to lead by example. She did not complain. She remained grateful for every kindness she received. She welcomed family and friends with her unforgettable smile. She let her loved ones know they remained loved. She remained steadfast in her profound belief in God. Her family will always celebrate these final acts of a wonderful mother and grandmother. The wake will be at McLaughlin Funeral Home, 625 Pavonia Ave, Jersey City, on Sunday and Monday from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. Relatives and friends are invited to assemble at the funeral home on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at 9am prior to the funeral mass at St. Aedan's Church at 10:00am. Interment will follow at Laurel Grove Cemetery in Totowa.7 |

Death* | Robert William Curtis died on 8 March 2018 at Carson City, Carson City, Nevada, at age 88.2 |
Obit | Robert William's obituary was published in the Nevada Appeal on 25 March 2018: “Dr.” Robert W. Curtis, age 88, passed away peacefully at his home in Carson City on March 8, 2018. He is survived by his four children. He and his wife Donna moved to Carson City in 2002.
Robert was best known locally for wearing his Veterans hat which had on it, “World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War.” His 25-year military history began when he quit high school during his freshman year. Growing up on the Depression years, Robert essentially was left to his own devices which meant he wasn’t interested in school, so he was frequently truant. This might have been because he suffered from ADD-type problems which weren’t treated in those days. He was also not on his good behavior and eventually was caught for working under age. So, Robert, at age 14, decided to join the Army. Soon, he found himself stationed in England and flying over Germany in a B-17 Bomber as a heavy machine gunner. He flew 15 missions before WWII ended.
After being discharged at age 17, Robert found himself again at loose ends after getting bored with being a bodyguard to his wealthy sister and going to fancy nightclubs in New York. So, he decided to join the Air Force and maybe become a jet mechanic. He had to take an aptitude test. But because he was essentially illiterate, he just marked the answer sheet in such a way that he had so many correct answers the Air Force believed he was a college graduate and offered him a position at the Pentagon clerking for four-star generals. Thus, began Robert’s 24 -year Air Force career where he achieved the highest enlisted rank of Chief Master Sargent and served in many Leadership capacities all over the world, including being asked by name to join an air photo squad in Vietnam.
In 1971, the USAF informed Robert they had another overseas assignment, possibly again in Vietnam. Robert retired. But soon he rejoined the government and thus began his second 25-year career with the Federal Civil Service.
Robert worked mostly in the human relations field or as a management consultant including oversight on very large military construction programs in Europe. After 15 years in Germany, he was required to return back in the US, and was stationed at the Presidio Base in San Francisco working for the General of the Sixth Army. This was at the time of the beginning of base closures which began with the Presidio. Roberts job was to write the plan for this base closure and that of the Sixth Army. The plan became the basis of other base closures, including another which Robert wrote in 1997 for the Coast Guard Base at Governors Island just outside Manhattan, New York City. By this time, Robert had obtained his BA [and] two Masters Degrees, one in business and another in political science.
But one of Robert’s most proud achievements is the awarding of his Doctorate of Business Management in 2010. This DBA degree is based on his published book, “History, Disposition and Impact, Presidio Base Closure and Other Base Closures.”
Robert was always pleased to set himself as an example of someone, who after quitting school and living a questionable life ended up with four college degrees and an illustrious 50-year career in the Federal Government and with over 40 letters of commendation for his ideas and work. All of this was capped with a position as Human Resource Officer for the US Mission to the United Nations in 2001. In this capacity he worked under US Ambassador Negroponte in the State Department. After retiring and as he put it, “being blackmailed by his wife Donna to move to Carson City,” the very next week, August 2002, his office was visited by President George W. Bush and Secretary of State Colin Powell.
Robert spent the remainder of his life traveling with his wife and looking after his home and his beloved cats. He loved telling stories about his life and people would respond that he should write a book. Alas, he didn’t do that, but he left many people with fond memories of his remarkable achievements.
Robert was buried in his family’s plot in New Jersey on March 16th. There will be a Celebration of Life at the Carson City Elks Lodge #2577, 515 N. Nevada Street on Sunday, April 8, 2018 from 2:00-4:00 pm. Anyone knowing Robert or Donna is invited. An RSVP is appreciated by sending an email to donnajcurtis@sbcglobal.net. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Carson City Elks Lodge or to a favorite cat shelter in the Carson City Area.4 |
