"JC" Curtis Jr., 65, died at 6:45 p.m. Friday after an extended illness in Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago.He was born May 28, 1943, in Indianapolis, to the late John A.D. Sr. and Marjorie D. (Woodworth). JC was an independent over-the-road trucker for over 30 years, mostly working out of Granger, IN, under the name of John Curtis Trucking. In his younger years he attended Culver Military Academy in Culver, IN, as well as Lincoln Technical Institute in Indianapolis, where he developed his skills in mechanics. He had a love for speed, and became an avid drag car driver, racing the "quarter mile" on tracks all across the country. He raced funny cars, motorcycles, jet cars and even a semi once, and won first in his class during the Labor Day Nationals in Clairmont, IN, many years ago. As he grew older, he spent his time with his grandchildren and attended classic car shows. He was a member of the 1965-1966 Classic Car Club. On May 28, 1996, in Osceola, he married Shirley A. Takace, who survives. Also surviving are daughters, Stephanie (Anthony) Payne and Shannon Avara, both of Mishawaka; a son, James Avara of South Bend; sisters, Pamela (George) Whipple of Hamilton, OH, Sue Ann (Robert) Haberle of Greencastle, IN, and Jean (Floyd) Cummins of Coatesvile, IN; and three grandchildren. There will be no visitation or services as cremation has taken place. Burial at Stilesville Cemetery, Stilesville, IN, will follow at a later date. Billings Funeral Home, Elkhart, is handling arrangements.2 |
