Obit | Darius's obituary was published in the Rochester Sentinel on 8 February 1912: When the sad news gained circulation Wednesday evening and this morning that Darius AULT had suddenly passed away at his home on West Eighth street Wednesday evening there was general sorrow expressed at the departure of this well known and highly popular citizen and comrade. The suddenness of his death may be realized when it is known that Mr. Ault was enjoying his usual health Wednesday and in fact up to the very moment when he was stricken with what is believed to have been an attack of heart trouble. Mr. & Mrs. Ault were seated at their home and were discussing the advisability of retiring when Mr. Ault remarked that he was Rochester Evening Sentinel - 1912 suffering such an unusual pain in his breast. Mrs. Ault noted that he was rapidly becoming worse and ran to the home of A. H. SKINNER, next door, to phone for a physician. When she returned Mr. Ault did not recognize her and passed away shortly after the arrival of the physician. Darius Ault was born in Rochester, May 29, 1846, and now is the last of a family of eighteen children, of which he was the youngest. His boyhood days were spent in the vicinity of Rochester and when the Civil war broke out he was at once anxious to join the fray. However, his tender age and small stature were against him and he was turned down. However, he was not to be put aside and on September 7, 1861, he joined the 29th Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry at LaPorte. He enlisted as a drummer boy and served in that capacity until he was discharged at Nashville, Tennessee, February 10, 1863, on account of disability of throat and lungs. He took part in the battles of Shiloh, Corinth and Stone River, of which the former was the most important. His intimate friends during service were Isom R. NEW, Andrew C. SHEPHERD, Jeremiah SMITH and Perry SHOEMAKER, of whom the latter two are dead. After his discharge he came home and in February, 1863, he was united in marriage with Miss Emma ORR of this city. To this union one daughter, Miss Nellie AULT, of Cleveland, Ohio, survives with the wife and mother and both have the profound sympathy of their relatives and a wide circle of personal friends. “Jud” AULT as he was known by everyone in this city and many of the surrounding towns was one of the jolliest citizens the city afforded and was always ready with a cheerful word for all. He was beloved by all as an honorable and upright citizen and the boyishness of his good natured remarks and his stature were hid in more serious moments by the thoughts of a really big man. As a lover of home, nature and comrades he was a model of contentment and when he was not whiling the time away at his home he was either with the soldier boys in the court house or if it be in summer he was to be found at the lake, where he spent many hours in his favorite fishing spots. “Jud” Ault was a noble comrade and a man, and is one that will be sorely missed from his usual haunts for many a day to come. The funeral arrangements have not been announced.2 |

Death | He died on 17 October 1917 at Rochester, Fulton, Indiana, at age 87; buried at the Rochester I.O.O.F. Mausoleum.2 |
Obit* | Christian's obituary was published in the Rochester Sentinel on 18 October 1917: Christian HOOVER, 87, who conducted a furniture store in this city for more than 60 years, died Wednesday morning at 10:30 at the home on West 6th St. He had been confined to the house or only two weeks, but in the last year had been declining, altho his remarkable clearness of mind remained with him until the last. Three weeks ago he had perfected plans to spend the winter in Florida. Death was caused by euramia. Mr. Hoover was Rochester’s oldest business man. Coming here in 1852, he went into the furniture business in 1854. He was born in Franklin county, Pa., September 15, 1830. In 1852, he left home for the West to secure work at his trade, which was cabinet making. After visiting Detroit, he went to South Bend where he was unable to find anything. He then started to walk to Logansport, but stopped in Rochester where he secured work of P. A. MANN, who was then in the furniture business here. Mr. Hoover also worked at that time for Jacob WHITTENBERGER at Akron, walking from Rochester and back daily, for less than $1 a day. In 1854, Mr. Hoover and Jesse YOST went into the furniture business and when Mr. Yost died a year later, the surviving partner purchased the business. He remained active in his chosen vocation until within two weeks of his death, coming daily to the store. He always maintained that activity was the secret of long life and until this year, went annually to the Wisconsin lake region to rough it. He often said that he was not going to rust out. Mr. Hoover was a man with few habits. He quit using tobacco 50years ago. Mr. Hoover represented a type of business men who are not numerous. It is said that his desk was jammed with thousands of dollars worth of notes, given in the purchase of furniture, which are outlawed, but despite the fact that he was a poor collector, he left a comfortable fortune. He never turned away from the store a poor man, who needed help, and donated much money to Rochester enterprises which cost him heavily. It is said that the Rochester Lock Co. lost him $14,000. Mr. Hoover’s first store was located on the site of the present Palm Parlor. Several years later he moved north to the present location. When his son, Charles, was living he started a shoe store, which was managed by the former. Altho he never aspired to office, Mr. Hoover was an ardent supporter of the republican party. He was probably the oldest member of that organization in the county and was one of the first men to back the party when organized by the followers of Abraham Lincoln. He was also the oldest member of the local Masonic lodge and was an Odd Fellow for years. In 1855, Mr. Hoover married Julien BARKDOLL. They were the parents of four children: George [HOOVER], Charles [HOOVER], Mrs. M. O. REES and another daughter, of whom Mrs. M. O. Rees alone survives. After the death of his first wife, Mr. Hoover married his wife’s sister, Margaret BARKDOLL, who is living. They were the parents of one son, John HOOVER, who is living. Several years ago, Mr. Hoover adopted Miss Trudie HOOVER, a daughter of Samuel BARKDOLL. Miss Hoover was taken to raise by Mr. and Mrs. Hoover when an infant, at the death of her mother. Thomas HOOVER, (son of Mr. and Mrs. John HOOVER), has been a member of the Hoover household since he was several months old. He leaves one sister, who lives in Pennsylvania. Funeral Saturday afternoon at two o’clock at the house, Rev. Scott HERSHEY in charge. A number of business houses closed Saturday afternoon during the hour of the Christian Hoover funeral. The offices of the United Public Service Comany were closed all the afternoon out of respect for Mr. Hoover, who was one of the founders and a former director of the institution. The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. Scott P. HERSHEY and special musical numbers were given by Miss Ruth BRINKMAN and C. J. IRWIN. The Masons were in charge of the burial at the mausoleum.2 |

CORBETT, of Rochester, Ind., were joined in the holy bonds of matrimony, the services being performed by the Rev. Thomas S. WYNKOOP. The marriage was quiet and unostantious, only a few select and intimate personal friends of the high contracting parties being present. The bride was handsomely attired in a neat traveling suit, and the happy couple, as they stood in the exquisite parlors of the Elliott mansion, presented a rare picture of youth and beauty. They left on the 10 o’clock train for Philadelphia and New York, and will reach their home in Indiana about the middle of January next. -- Washington National Republican.2,5,6 |

HOOVER, and a widely known shoe dealer of this city, died at his home Monday morning, of bronchial trouble aged 34 years. Charley, as he was familiarly known, had been an invalid for two years and had tried health resorts, sanitariums and the best medical skill but all without avail. Deceased was born in this city and by an ever affable disposition and honorable bearing, grew into one of the most popular business men of the city. Mr. Hoover married Miss Julia CORBETT in 1886, and she, with his father, one sister, Mrs. Milton O. REES, one brother George HOOVER, and one half-brother, John HOOVER are the only near relatives remaining. Rev. GIFT preached the funeral at the residence Tuesday afternoon, after which the K. of P. order, Fire company, of which he was a brave member, and a long line of citizens in carriages sorrowfully escorted the remains to the grave in Odd Fellows cemetery.7 |

Death* | John Butler Hoover died on 23 May 1923 at Rochester, Fulton, Indiana, at age 54; buried at the Rochester I.O.O.F. Cemetery.2 |
Obit | John Butler's obituary was published in the Rochester Sentinel on 24 May 1923: Over exertion during a golf match on the hilly links at Peru Wednesday, followed by a long ride through the cold air after becoming extremely warm and a hearty meal later in the evening, are believed responsible for the death from heart failure of John B. HOOVER, well known Rochester undertaker and furniture dealer, who was found dead in his furniture store early Thursday morning. He was 54 years of age. Mr. Hoover had enjoyed his customary good health and so far as could be learned had never complained of his heart, which must have been affected, however, by his exertions Wednesday at Peru. In company with several companions, Floyd [VanTRUMP] and Carl VanTRUMP, he went to Peru where he played golf strenuously thruout the day. Returning to Rochester in the evening, the party ate a hearty meal and a little later left his friends and apparently went to his furniture store. Hoover was in the habit of stopping in his place of business in the evening and working on his books or some other work about the store. It is believed that while so engaged he fell ill and went to the upper floor of the store to lay down. It was here that his body was found by Ora FOSTER, an employee of the store, when he opened up for business Thursday morning. Physicians were summoned and they in company with Coroner HAIMBAUGH, pronounced death due to heart failure. The body was removed to the Hoover chapel. Funeral arrangements will be made later.
John B. HOOVER was born in Rochester, December 30, 1868, a son of Christian and Margaret HOOVER, deceased. He was educated in the public schools of Rochester and later became associated with his father in the furniture and undertaking business. About 30 years ago he was united in marriage to Miss Jennie BUTLER, who with a son, Tom HOOVER, a sister, Mrs. M. O. REES, of this city, and a foster sister, Miss Trude HOOVER, survive. Two half-brothers, George [HOOVER] and Charley HOOVER, and a half-sister preceded him. Hoover was probably one of the best known business men in this section of the country. His father, Christian Hoover, had been engaged in business in Rochester continuously over a period of 65 years and John Hoover took over the furniture and undertaking business left by the father at his death several years ago. He was always an extremely active man, in spite of his advanced years and was very popular among his numerous friends. He was known as an expert sportsman and spent considerable time in hunting and fishing and more especially in later years during the season at playing golf. Among other activities were his acts of charity, which though little known to the public, were of great extent in the community. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to a friend. He was a member of the Eagles lodge and a staunch supporter of the G.O.P.
Friday, May 25, 1923 Funeral services for the late John B. HOOVER, who died suddenly Wednesday night of heart failure, will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock from the Presbyterian church, Rev. D. S. PERRY in charge. The body has been placed in the Hoover home on the corner of Jefferson and Sixth streets where friends may call. Interment will be made in the I.O.O.F. cemetery. Those from out of town who attended the funeral of E. F. BRUBAKER were: Mrs. Allie BRUBAKER and daughter, Mrs. H. B. THRUSH, of Hammond, Mr. and Mrs. Fred SIDMORE, of Jackson, Mich., Harry BRUBAKER, of South Bend, Mrs. Lewis FORE, of Mentone, Mr. and Mrs. Tilman BRUBAKER, of Plymouth, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. BRUBAKER, of Twelve Mile, and Mr. and Mrs. Jacob BRUBAKER, of Fulton.2 |
