(Witness) Bio | Nathan Meeker were alive today he would be celebrating his 185th birthday party. Just because he is gone doesn't mean the celebrations have to end.
On Monday, the second Mr. Meeker's Neighborhood Walking Tour will kick off the Meeker Week celebration which culminates on July 12 with a birthday party given in Meeker's honor. Peggy Ford, research coordinator for the city of Greeley Museums, said Meeker Week has been created for people to learn more about the history of the Meekers and how the city was originally built.
"It's a chance to promote the Meeker home, which opened in 1929 as the city's first museum," Ford said.
The Meeker's two-story home will be the setting for all the week's festivities.
The week begins with Meeker's neighborhoods, a narrated walking tour led by Betsy Kellums, historic preservation specialist for the city of Greeley. The tour begins at the Meeker Home and visits some early Greeley landmarks. Bring a water bottle and wear comfortable shoes.
Tuesday is Arvilla's Delightful Lawn Party. Arvilla Delight Smith became Mrs. Nathan Meeker in April 1844.
Miss Tabitha, also known as Sharon Moore, will present her Tea for Two program on the lawn, followed by a sampling of tea dainties. Croquet and badminton will be set up, there will be caricatures by Colette, and the Meeker Home will be open for guided tours. Bring a sack lunch.
On Wednesday, Ford will present "Strifes and Struggles of the First Family." She will tell little-known stories of the Meeker family including family tragedies, their financial troubles and their interaction with neighbors.
July 12 is Nathan Meeker's 185th birthday. Hot dogs, cake and lemonade will be served, and croquet, badminton and other games will be played. Participants can fold their own party hats out of newspapers.
"This is a perfect fit since Nathan Meeker was a newspaperman in New York and published the first edition of the Greeley Tribune in November 1870, just seven months after the colonists arrived here," said Chris Dill, museum superintendent.
Ford said that Meeker was excited about the Colorado town and the people that he recruited to live here.
"All of his hopes and dreams of a utopian community in the West were revived because of the beautiful Colorado territory offered," Ford said.
