(Witness) Bio | Robert Raleigh Curtis, M.D., son of Dr. M.M. and Susan C. McElroy Curtis, was born January 17, 1871, near Moffat in Bell County. This prominent Temple doctor attended Baylor University and finished his medical education at the University of Louisville Medical School in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1894. He entered the practice of medicine at Davilla in Milam County, and later practiced at Bartlett, Rogers and Somerville prior to moving to Temple in 1923.
He married Eugenia Sharp on December 24, 1895. She was the daughter of Dr. William Franklin and Mary Adkins Sypert Sharp and granddaughter of William Caroll and Permelia Benjamine Perry Sypert. She was born December 14, 1873 at Davilla and was educated at Baylor College and Hamilton College in Frankfort, Kentucky. Dr. Curtis was a member of First Baptist Church, president of Texas Fox Hunters Association in 1937, member of Bell County medical associations, and past president of Central Texas Medical Association. He was a staff member of Scott and White Hospital since coming to Temple and had been a surgeon at the Santa Fe Hospital for eight years at the time of his death. Other memberships included: Masonic Lodge, Odd Fellows, Kiwanis Club and Knights of Pythias Lodge. Dr. and Mrs. Curtis were the parents of three sons: Frank, who was killed in France during World War I; Dr. Raleigh R; and Volney. Dr. Curtis died July 20, 1938, and his wife died September 21, 1952. Their marked graves are in Hillcrest Cemetery in Temple.13 |

Obit | Alonzo Leonidas (Lon)'s obituary was published in the Bell County Democrat on 3 January 1935: Death Claims A.L. Curtis, Prominent Criminal Lawyer. A. Lon Curtis, 62, for many years one of the leading attorneys of Texas, died in a Dallas hospital just before noon last Friday, after an illness of several months. Funeral services were held from the Curtis home, corner Maia Street and Tenth Avenue, Sunday at 3:30 p.m., with Dean E.G. Townsend of Mary Hardin-Baylor College, officiating. Interment was in North Belton Cemetery. Mr. Curtis was born in Arkansas December 5, 1872, coming to Moffat with his parents in 1873. He was educated in the community school, was graduated from the University of Texas and later received a degree from the University of Michigan. He started his law practice in Temple in 1897, and soon thereafter was elected city attorney, which position he held for six years, resigning to make the race for county attorney. He served two terms as county attorney of Bell County, residing here continuously since his election to that office. He was married to Miss Cora Lee, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ben D. Lee, April 7, 1898. She and a son Lee Curtis, also a prominent attorney; one brother, Dr. R.R. Curtis, Temple, and a niece Miss Katherine Knight, San Marcos, survive. Active pallbearers were C.W. Pepper, Dallas; George W. Young, Dallas; Gordon Robertson, Little Rock, Ark; Senator Roy Sanderford, Belton; Paul B. Baker, Austin; James K. Evette, Leslie Mitchell and Dr. Curtis. Honorary pallbearers included Dr. R.W. Pohle, Dr. W.A. Chernesky, Mr. E.V. Powell, Dr. M.P. Mentlhannon[?] and members of the Bell County Bar Association. |

(Witness) Bio | Raleigh Robert Curtis, M.D., a native of Bartlett, was born May 8, 1910 and graduated from Temple High School in 1926. He received his B.A. degree from the University of Texas in 1930 and his M.D. degree from the University of Texas Medical School in 1934. His internship and residency were served at Scott and White Memorial Hospital. Afterwards, he was on the hospital staff in internal medicine before leaving Temple in 1958. He was on the hospital board for a number of years. He was past president of Bell County Medical Society and Temple Rotary Club. Memberships also included 12th District Medical Society, Texas Medical Society, American Medical Association, and Associate of the American College of Physicians. Dr. Curtis was chief of internal medicine and staff psychiatrist at the state hospital in Benton, Arkansas at the time of his death in a car accident near Benton on November 8, 1962. His marked grave is in the family plot at Hillcrest Cemetery in Temple. He was survived by two sons: Frank and Bobby.3 |

(Witness) Bio | During a recent visit of Harry Burns Curtis, an executive of the Southwest Power Company of McAlester, Okla., to his home in Bentonville, a picture showing four generations of the family was made at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. P.P. Curtis, in Bentonville, the representatives of the four generations being James P. Burns, pioneer citizen of Bentonville; his daughter, Mrs. Curtis, her son, Harry Burns Curtis and the 18 months’ old daughter of Mr. Curtis, Mary Jane Curtis. Mr. Burns celebrated his eighty-ninth birthday, May 7. He was born in Tennessee and served in the Confederate Army. He was in business here for many years with his brother, the late John Burns, but has been retired from active business life for some years. Mrs. Gertrude Burns Curtis was born in Bentonville, has lived here all her life and is identified with the church and social life of the city. Harry Burns Curtis also was born in Bentonville. He is a graduate of the University of Arkansas, and until recent transfer to McAlester, Okla., as business manager of the Southwest Power Company, with headquarters at McAlester, he and his family have lived in Fayetteville, his little daughter having been born in that city.
