Joe is survived by his wife, Madeline, of the family home; two daughters, Joanna Sandoval and husband, Peter along with their children Joe, Jeff, James and their families; Gretchen Lane and husband, Golden along with their children Stephen, Susan, Shana, Cary and their families; and nine loving great-grandchildren. Joe was in the newspaper business for half of his working life starting as a printer's apprentice; the owner of two newspapers; and then in advertising for the Albuquerque Journal. He then spent the other half of his work life as manager for Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Company. He had a great sense of humor and told lots of good stories. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.6 |

Obit | Madeline's obituary was published in the Albuquerque Journal on 10 April 2003: Madeline B. Toffelmire, 94, died at peace in her home on April 2. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe. After five short months of being separated, they are now together again. Madeline and Joe got married on February 25, 1928, and spent many years working together in the newspaper business, first in selling advertising for the Beverly Hills newspaper, then on to Chicago, and then into newspaper ownership in Clinton, Oklahoma, and Alice, Texas. After moving to Albuquerque, Madeline stayed home. She raised two daughters, was keenly interested in politics so she became active in the League of Women Voters, argued politics with Joe since she was Democrat and he was Republican, was a daily swimmer for many years, loved her yard and birds, and had a special relationship with her grandchildren. Madeline was also preceded in death by her granddaughter, Janet. She is survived by her two daughters, Joanna Sandoval and Gretchen Lane along with their husbands, Peter and Golden; their loving grandchildren, Joe, Jeff, James, Stephen, Susan, Shana, Cary, their spouses; and her great-grandchildren. Madeline will be missed not only by her immediate family but by many of her nieces and nephews whose lives she influenced. A Memorial Mass will be held in Tome, NM on April 14, 2003. Our gratitude goes out to the neighbors and friends who lent us their support through the years but especially to Hospice and Lupe for their loving care.3 |
