Obit | Eugene Debs's obituary was published in the Mountaineer on circa 24 January 2002: CANDLER -- Eugene Debs Gudger, 90, of Candler, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002 at Mission St. Joseph’s Health System. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he was the son of the late Robert Franklin and Harriett Virginia Curtis Gudger. He was retired from Champion International with 37 years service and attended Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran serving in WWII. He was a member of the American Legion Post 61 of Canton and VFW Post 9939 of Candler. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Leiper, Lucy Gudger and Ruth Toms; and one brother, Joyce Gudger. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Mary Madelyn Peeler Gudger. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Wells Funeral Home in Canton. The Rev. Phillip Hurst will officiate. Burial will follow in the Ridgeway Baptist Church cemetery.5 |
