NoteB* Thomas served in both Confederate and Union units during the Civil War. His pension file contains two explanations of his service. “I joined the 60th Regiment, Company A North Carolina Confederate troops about the 17 day of July 1862 and remained with that regiment a short time and left it and was put into the 62nd. Regiment Company C. North Carolina volunteers and was captured with said regiment near the Warm Springs in Madison County, N.C. on or about October the 28th 1863 & was first sent to Camp Chase & from there to Rock Island (Illinois) as a prisoner of war & there remained until about the 17th day of Oct. 1864 at which time I volunteered & joined the 3rd Regiment Co. H, U.S. Troops & was sent to the Territory of Colorado & there remained until sent to St. Louis, Missouri to the marine hospital & was there discharged” 15 October 1865.
“As to my confederate service it is very easily told. I remained at home and was hunted for by the rebels around my home like I had been a wolf from the beginning of the war until the fall of 1862 in October I believe I was forced to leave my house and put in to the 60th N.C. Regiment. I remained there 2 or 3 weeks and made my escape from it near Marshall. I stayed [?] as best I recollect around home about one year then the Confederate details forced me to the 62 N.C. Regt at Warm Springs and I only was there 3 days until I ran through the lines while in a fight and the federals treated me as a prisoner of war.”
Thomas eventually received a pension for his Union Army service.8

Their first child, Odus, died at the age of 3 or 4, but the other four children were buried with no name, as they were still born. Della gavebirth to 14 children and raised 9.9
