Obit | Joseph Manley's obituary was published in the Mountaineer on 31 March 1958: Joseph Manley Curtis, 82, of Canton, died at his home at 6 Water Street at 1:30 p.m. Saturday following a lingering illness. Mr. Curtis, a retired merchant, operated a retail grocery store for 45 years, was a Spanish-American War veteran, a member of the Central Methodist Church, a past master of the Pigeon River Mason Lodge and was a 32nd degree Mason. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Ida Pettitt Curtis; four daughters, Mrs. Howell Ruffaker of Canton, Mrs. “Robert Howard of Arlington, Va., Mrs. Stuart MacDonald of New Baltimore, Mich., and Mrs. W.L. Stone of Asheville; two sons, John H. Curtis of Asheville and Charles Manley Curtis of Elizabethton, Tennessee; four sisters, Miss Dorothy Curtis, Mrs. Sophia Cabe and Mrs. W.H. Anderson of Canton, and Mrs. R.S. Jackson of Chattanooga, Tenn. a brother, Albert B. Curtis of Chattanooga; and eight grandchildren. Services were held at 11 a.m. today in the Central Methodist Church. The Rev. Cecil G. Hefner officiated and burial was in Bon-A-Venture Cemetery.10 |

Curtis, of Canton. He had been apparently well this morning and took part in a church entertainment last night. He became sick suddenly about 10 o’clock today and died about 1:30 p.m. of apoplexy of the brain. Mr. Curtis was formerly employed by the Wachovia Loan & Trust Co., at Asheville, but had been at his home here for some time. He was a devout member of the Methodist church and took a very active part in the church work. He was a young man of a very promising future. He was aged 23. The funeral services will be held tomorrow and interment made in the Locus Field Cemetery.3 |
