Funeral services for Fred Wyse, former acting warden and deputy warden of Colorado State Prison who died Sunday in Colorado Springs, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 11 at the Holt-Dixon Chapel of the Garden. Wyse, who with his family had lived in Colorado Springs since his retirement from the penitentiary, became ill at his home Saturday afternoon. His condition worsened and he was taken to the hospital. He died early Sunday morning as emergency treatment was being administered. He was 75.
He was born on April 8, 1908 at Camden, Missouri. At age 8, he moved with his family the then-booming Fremont County coal camp of Coal Creek. He was reared there and attended school. As a young man, he worked in coal mines and for Continental Oil Co. In 1941, Wyse went to work for the prison as a tower and yard guard. He received several promotions and held the rank of captain when Harry Tinsley was named warden in 1951. Tinsley named him deputy warden in 1957. After Tinsley was selected a chief of corrections for the state of Colorado, Wyse remained on as deputy warden under Warden Wayne K. Patterson. He later became acting warden in 1972 and held that top post at the institution until his retirement in 1974.
For 12 years, Wyse was on the City Council of Canon City, serving on several major committees. He was a member of Mt. Moriah Masonic Lodge and Canon City Elks Lodge No. 610. He and Catherine Marie Curtis were married Oct. 26, 1931 at Raton, N.M. and had been married for more than 51 years.
Mrs. Wyse survives as does a sister, Mary Duncan of Torrance, Calif; three daughters, Joan Peru and Peggy Ridenour of Colorado Springs and Patsy Bomhoff of Tucson, Ariz; and five grandchildren. Wyse and members of his family were former members of the Canon City Presbyterian Church and later Mountain View Presbyterian Church of Colorado Springs. The Rev. Dale Ammon of Colorado Springs will officiate at funeral services Wednesday. Interment will be at Lakeside Cemetery with Elks committal services at the grave. Holt-Dixon Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.3
